I bet that's a perfect choice for bear. I have been so covered up in bears this year, I am kind of thinking the same way. I have a Husqvarna model 246 in 9.3x62 that I plan to use. Like yours, it is an FN mauser action, Husqvarna was using some surplus FN military actions right before the war. I have heard the calibers are very similar, but I have never used the Whelen. I have used this gun on deer it is definitely enough gun. Easy on the arm though, no worse than a 30-06. Also not a meat destroyer. Just a biggish clean hole straight through, no fragment damage.

Sweet gun Weatherby!

Yesterday I added a sling and got familiar with the trigger.....pre range trip.

Trigger is very nice.....no creep or takeup just a nice crisp break.
Really looking forward to trying it out now as I love a good trigger.

The previous owner is rounding up the brass dies and bullets for me as he no longer needs them.A big plus for me in starting off with this.

Thanks guys the stock and chambering were big factors in why it came home.

CONGRATULATIONS---THAT'S A BEAUTY, WITH GREAT PARTS, AND GREAT ATTENTION TO DETAIL ! ! !

THE 35 WHELEN IS A VERY VERSATILE AND PRACTICAL CALIBER. INCREASINGLY MORE MAJOR BRANDS ARE OFFERING A VARITY OF LOADS TO CHOOSE FROM. THEY ARE MODERATELY PRICED, IF YOU ARE NOT A HANDLOADER.....

Beautiful Rifle. I also hunt with a 35 Whelen....love it. Do Richard's stocks have to be fitted and bedded?

Never fired 35 Whelen but the best hunter I know personally, that’s his favorite chambering if he had to pick one. Routinely drops big bucks with it and black bear too. Moose as well. Beautiful rifle you got there.

Beautiful rifle, with splendid wood grain. And of course, a Mauser.

What's not to like?

Nice.
I had every plan to build a .35 Whelen on a Mauser I had and end result was gonna look very similar. Just somehow never got around to it and it went away in a trade.
Did end up with a T/C Encore in .35 Whelen. Great hunting hardware.

I'm ready for the range and can't get there.
It needs air time.

Updating an old thread as things have been going the Whelen's way as of late.

A few weeks ago it got a scope upgrade.
Then a range trip was necessary.
The girl I hunt with seemed pretty capable with it.
Now just today I got an extremely great deal on some factory ammo.
BTW.....I really like the TBBC bullet

Quite a large number of years back, I passed up a beautiful Winchester Model 54 rifle (predecessor to the Model 70) at a very good price which had been re-barreled to .35 Whelen. I think I scorned it because of the non-original caliber. I wish I hadn't.

I LOVE THAT!!!!!!!!!! Good for you!!!!!!!!!!!

For years and years I wanted to sporterize a 98 Mauser. In the 1990s I obtained a Yugoslavian 98 Mauser and had it done. I can't even recall all the details. Shilen or Douglas barrel, I think the former, Timney trigger, jeweled bolt, fancy wood, etc. Schnabel forend, Decelerator recoil pad. Low power Leupold scope.

Most importantly here...............35 Whelen!

In my 2018 fire it was one of the many survivors in the Browning gun safe. It did get some water damage but the biggest issue was the ruined scope. So I took it to the LGS gunsmith and he re-made the rifle for me. He shortened the barrel, took off some wood to make it lighter, modernized the forend, cleaned it all up, and added a 3x9 Leupold scope. The wood is darker now but has no water stains and has retained some of the background flame that it had before.

The .35 Whelen caliber is death on feral hogs. I am so so looking forward to getting out into the pig fields again and watching them drop like flies to this marvelous rifle. Good job weatherby/OP - you're gonna love it!

Very glad that one survived.
I'm a bit envious of those pig fields too.

Sure we're not brothers?
Your sig line and my avatar leads me to think so.
