Both of mine are 18" saw backs by Ontario. Nothing fancy. They say US on them but I suspect that refers to pattern. Both have plastic handles with one being a D guard. One lives in my truck, the other in my shed. Both have chopped up a whole bunch of stuff and done it well, especially the one in the truck. Both had to be sharpened when new, which is best done with a stone. I have also used my Cold Steel cutlass to cut brush and tree limbs, but the machetes are easier on the wrist.

When I was a kid 60 years ago a friend had what he called a "bolo". Had about a 12" blade and it folded. Been looking for decades but no luck.

I have a Bolo. Stamped USMC Chatillon, NY came with a Horsehide case and the metal to attach to a WW2 GI belt {1910} the blade is 11 1/2 inches long. It has a wooden handle with 3 brass rivets. It's not a folder.

I have gotten a few bolos lately. My current project is this 20” Collins. After reading so much about Collins here, I had to have one when I saw this for sale. Ostensibly NOS, I can’t rule out the possibility it is a fake. The handle is suspiciously clean for a knife that is supposed to be 50 years old.
It is going to take some work to put an edge on it. I don’t expect too much from this one on account of its weight. It may prove to be a good chopper, but I can’t see myself flailing in the underbrush for even an hour or two without wearing out.
I expect a lot more from the 16” Imacasa bolo in the last photo. Despite its size, it is quite light and nimble with a comfortable handle. The edge sharpened up nicely with a file, and seems quite a bit more durable than the very thin edge on my 14” Tramontina.

My Collins is South American, I think. The other is my 1945 dated U.S. issue TrueTemper.

Worked many homicides in the migrant camps of south Miami-Dade. A machete seemed to be the weapon of choice. Deadly. My personal one is marked US 1943 S.W.I., whatever that means.

Your new blade looks like it’ll do some work. I still have one my dad gave me in the 80s...though I haven’t used it in years.

Seeing that would make me want to have the 12 gauge around.

I picked up an old Collins 24" machete in a leather sheath in New Mexico many years ago. It stays in my truck tool box and does a great job clearing shooting lanes in my deer woods, where a lot of Chinese privet hedge is trying to take over. you get a lot of reach and inertia with that long 24" blade. I painted the blade flat black years ago to keep it from rusting and put a rubber sleeve over the scales for a surer grip. It would also be a fearsome weapon if needed in such duty. A little occasional file work and a few passes through a Rada pull-through sharpener keeps it keen.

This is my WW II Case XX Survival Machete for pilots. Would make a very formidable close quarters weapon if needed.

The kukri is from Kukri House International, and the Barong is a special offering from Cold Steel several years ago.
The kukri was made in Nepal, and included with it was a photo and short bio on the smith that made it. Very neat.

Got silly today and bought another machete. This one is marked U.S. LEGITIMUS COLLINS & CO. 1944 machete. The reason I bought it is it is in a scabbard marked U.S.M.C. BOYT -44-. It came with a USMC issue canteen cover and canteen & cup. All on a U.S. cartridge belt. Paid $100 for it, probably to much, but it was an impulse buy!

One more time, Filipino Negrito Bolo.
Hand made from probably a car spring.
Genuine Water Buffalo Scales.
Two piece wood scabbard nailed together with little brass nails.

We use to pay about $2.00 for those in the P.I. as souvenirs in 1970. Had to be shipped home as they would not allow us to keep "weapons" in the barracks.

Had a cheap machete I bought for $3 about 25 years ago in my truck. Lost track off it and haven't seen it in years. I guess in a pinch I could what some flora with one of these...

Stick to grasses, and nothing harder than sugar cane and it will cut for hours.

Went back to check out the machete's. Found out that I have a Martindale 13" golock machete, mine came in a British case with British stamps on it. years back you saw them all the time at local gun shows. Now infrequently.
A good cane knife will easily double as a cane knife and small tree limb remover. Frank

I have but a cheap 18" chicom machete. It appears to be a rough copy of the Ontario style, and came with a similar green canvas sheath with web belt attachment. The handle is affixed with screws instead of solid rivets. It's currently bent and the edge is dull. The last thing I did with it was clear a firing lane in the woods and was rewarded with tendinitis. Perhaps chopping trees with a dull machete is too much.
One of these years I aught to get something better.

Maybe a chain saw? Chopping trees is beyond the job requirements of any machete.

Sharpen it? Not hard at all with a sharp file if the grind is anywhere close.
OTOH, “something better” from Tramontina or Imacasa might only cost you ten or twenty bucks, depending on what you are cutting.

You ought to see what one can do to a human.During grinding season in the bunkhouses sometimes the mexicans get a little to much cerveza and get to chopping on each other.
But fot cutting roseaux and wax berry bushes to build duck blinds there is no equal. One of these and a T ball bat in your car and one is well armed indeed!!!!!

Where I come from,
Man Powdered Brush clearing is done with a Kaiser Blade.
I know, some folks call it a Swing Blade!
If you got a lot of clearing to do, think Bush Hog!
No, I did not whack my Mother like Billy Bob did!
