Default New Randall knives

Went to Kittery Trading Post today. Didn't see any guns I wanted, but ended up buying 2 Randall knives. Never had a Randall, so I thought what the heck I'll get them.

Seems like we should have a few Randall knife pictures while we're waiting for you to get home. I can only contribute one though; this unused but now new #28. Others?

Nice knife and the quality of a Randall IMHO is 2nd to none.

Only have one. But it’s a No. 1!
Here it is with a Bark River and an Omega.

Here's a model 12 w/ 11" blade making fruit kabobs and a model 7 w/ 5" blade. I forced a patina on the model 7 to prevent rust because it is my hunting knife.

Is the Bark River the Loveless style on the bottom?

Please describe how you "forced" that patina on the knife. Should interest some here.

I use mainly stainless blades, so haven't tried that.

Bark River Smoke Jumper is in the middle.
Bottom Blade is a Loveless Style Fighting Knife made my Hank Kubaiko,
NM Blade Master.
Hank made the Omega Brand while in Albuquerque.
Then Alaskan Maiden while in Palmer, Alaska.
Then he disappeared!

I am a big fan of the forced patina. Most of my Randalls are carbon and are users, so I do the same to them using vinegar.

I clean them good with hot water and Dawn dish soap then stick them blade down in a jar of pickled okra or pickled peppers or dill pickles for 6-8 hours. Its rather popular in the Randall community and often referred to as a "pickled" blade. Carbon blades seem to sharpen easier and hold an edge better than stainless, but are susceptible to rust. This "pickled" blade isn't as effective at retarding rust as stainless, but it helps significantly. "User" knives are often exposed to blood, sweat, water, humidity, etc., so this cuts down on the maintenance of the knives. I've heard of other methods of forcing a patina, but this is the one I have had the best results with. Here is a before picture from Arizona Custom Knives where I purchased the used knife and a picture of my knife after the pickle job.

One is a Model 26, the other one I'm not sure of. Maybe once I post pictures, perhaps someone can help identify it.

The Randall site was no help, although I thought it might be a Model 8.

Both knives have stag handles.

The sticker on one wrapping shows RMK35STG. The other sticker shows RMK264STG.

That means one is a model 3 with 5" blade and stag handle and one is a model 26 with 4" blade and stag handle.

From the sticker I think You have a Model 3 5inch and as You said a model 26 4inch which is the only blade for a 26.

I believe it's the one in the middle with the green canvas Micarta. I've had several Bark Rivers with that material, which I like for its slightly grippy texture with wet hands.

The question was answered above, but you're right.

I once owned a Loveless style fighter by Michael Ray of, I think, Wichita, KS. It looked very like the lowest knife in that pic, but mine was longer, probably a seven-inch blade. Handle was burgundy Micarta. A very good knife. Steel was 154CM.

I think Randall knifes are beautiful, well made, high quality knives. The only reason I never bought one is I ain't gonna wait 3 - 5 years for a knife to be made! When I was younger and wanted the heck out of one is when I should have ordered it - but didn't. Now that I am not really in a rush, I've got a plethora or other knives, no longer need it and at almost 65 don't want to receive it at 70.

The observation I have made over the years is that most who own Randall's never really use them because they are so beautiful. I applaud the fellas here who own, use and care for them and would rather see one with some honest wear and in great shape than one just sittin' purdy in the original box with all the packing. Just like my gun collection - no safe Queens.

My advise to a younger person who can afford one......... order one as a young man, use it all throughout your life, sit back an enjoy it with all the memories when you are old and then pass it down!!

While the knife in the photo is certainly not a Randall, I consider it the next best thing . It is my Marbles, Made in Gladstone MI from the mid 1990's. While it still looks great I have and still do use it and it is razor sharp. The darker sheath is one I had custom made for it which is better than the original.

I've got a few Randall knives...every one of them is a user and will eventually go to each of my kids when I'm fertilizing the cemetery lawn, so to speak.

Here are a couple of my favorites:

A Model 25-5

A Model 5-6

I also bought my first Randall just last year knowing at my age it will probably never be used. Like S&W revolvers, you can't just have one. I now have three. This one is with my 18-3.

Good for you bgrafsr, some very nice looking selections! I haven’t quite been able to talk myself into buying one quite yet, but it gets harder not to every time I walk past that display case. Sure beats waiting a year or however long to see what you bought and hold it too!

Hope you had a Splendid trip up in our little corner of the US as well. Let us know the highlights of your tour...

Visited Greenville to look for Moose, but didn't see any, Acadia Nat'l. Park, Bar Harbor, Camden, Kittery, Freeport, Kennebunkport.

Tried to go whale watching, but due to rough seas, trips were cancelled, or companies were closed for the season.

Tomorrow we head to the White Mountains in New Hampshire, and will ride the Cog Railway on Thursday.

Will head back to Ohio afterwards.
