What should I get?
I'd get an older C or T series pistol, and the sooner the better. Or even a pre-C or pre-T model. They will not be getting any cheaper.

About twenty years ago , I traded for an ANIB Hi Power in 30 Luger, which came with a complete 9mm top half and mags. Shot well in 9mm, never did acquire any 30 Luger ammo before a friend talked me out of it-then moved to Nevada (or I would have got it back from him eventually.) the 30 calibre with its lighter slide is a very elegant gun...

I was born in Canada and my Dad was in the RCAF during WWII so I decided I needed an Ingles that was built in Toronto during the War.

John, when you finally make it down here remember to bring that guy. Perhaps we can make some kind of a deal on it

You've got a P9, given the large cut for the slide stop, and the short safety lever, but with th3 1911 style P9M slide stop.

That's good news if you want to install a half moon style slide release as you already have the large notch in the frame (which is what the half moon is there to cover).

If someone had a 1st Gen P9M slide with the smaller cut for the 1911 style slide release, it could still be done, but it would have to either have the notch enlarged for the larger stud on the half mon style release, or the stud would have to be modified to fit the smaller notch in the P9M slide. If you look at the pictures in post #45, you'll see how the larger, blockier stud on Browning slide release lever has to be thinned down and reprofiled to fit the smaller P9M notch. I always recommend removing metal from the cheapest, easiest to replace part, in the vent you screw it up, so I work on the slide release lever, rather than messing with the slide. It's also easier and less obvious to cold blue the fresh metal on the slide release than it is to touch up the freshly ground edges on the slide notch.

A 50 gun collection was sold recently when the 48 year old owner unexpectedly dropped dead without ever owning or shooting an all steel Browning HP.
How much time is on your clock?

My boy cut his group size in half when he switched to our 1980 BHP from the M59.
Mag disconnect was still onboard but the trigger has always been absolutely Crisp. I took the disconnect out and it is a bit lighter, still crisp and the small thumb safety is not everyone’s favorite.

Great gun
Just that simple.

I bought a MKIII Browning HP. in 2013...for $250. The only thing I have done to it since then is shoot the snot out of it!
It is, in my opinion the finest 9mm semi-auto handgun made, and I couldn't recommend getting one more highly.

The original grips were changed when I decided to carry it.

I bought my first Hi Power a few months ago for $450. It's a MkIII with pachmeyers, and it came with the 13 round mag and four 15 round Mec Gar mags. It had a few small scuffs on it but the reason I got it so cheap was because the guy grinded off the hammer spur and it was a pretty rough job. I bought some nice checkered wood grips off the net for 20 bucks and got a ring hammer from Numrich Arms for $30 and I used Blue Wonder to enhance the finish and it now looks great. Not brand new, but great and it's become my favorite shooter and is my new night stand gun.

Never had "hammer bite" from an Hi Power, either from spur or rowel hammer.

I shoot one handed. Maybe that's why.

Don't have "fat" hands either.

At the OP. There are plenty of original HPs out there and many for a ressonable price. Don't rush it.

And of course there is nothing wrong with good clones either.
