Default Vague lube instructions

Cleaned two modern semi autos today. They were types new to me, so I read the manuals. (You can have my man card later). I was surprised to find that neither manual showed where lubrication should be applied. Thankfully, there was a common theme not to drown either gun in oil.

This is not a huge deal for me as I feel I have sufficient experience and powers of observation to do the job right. Even so, not all semis are designed the same way and it seemed to me that the new user was left high and dry.

What say you guys.

You are over thinking it. But a modest amount of lube on areas where parts move or rub on each other, don’t drown it in oil, done.

Jay, I don't think it is over-thinking. You are likely a very experienced gun owner and know what gets oil and what does not. I am still learning and do not want to make a mistake. I did make a mistake on my semi-auto by placing a small amount of oil on the sear, where parts move on each other. It changed the trigger feel and not in a good way. When I recently purchased our first revolver, I read the S&W generic revolver manual. The entire instruction for after-clean oiling is "After cleaning, lightly coat the metal parts, internal and external with a high quality gun oil". Does that mean I remove the grip and side plate and apply oil? Do I place oil into the front of the firing pin opening and the cylinder lock? I am assuming not.

Really became a Ballistol convert for my revolvers. Spray it down, clean it and everything that needs to be lubed has lube.

Use it a lot on semi autos now too.

There used to be a saying that goes something like this. "If it slides grease it,anything else oil it." I've used moly grease, lubriplate, Dry sprays goes on wet and dries to form a lubricating film, and a bunch of gun oils. One gent who frequented our gun club had so much oil on and in his semi auto that everyone had these specs of black oil on them, In the case of your semi autos its easy to figure out where the wear points are and lube them accordingly.Just don't drown them in oil. a drop or two is enough. I've seen a lot of new gun owners at my range that really need to be told "tear here" to get the box open.
