Default Range Report Black Rifle at 100 yards with 4X scope

Finally got around to putting a modern scope (Leuopold 1.5-4x20mm) on the post ban Bushmaster XM15-E2S with thousands of rounds down the 16.5" HBar barrel with a 1:9 twist:

Tried out six different types of target ammo at 100 yards from a bipod rest after zeroing the scope with ball ammo. Three types of ammo gave good results:

Three gave very good results:

I was having so much fun I forgot to keep track of which target went with which ammo

Will just have to go out and do it all over again, this time with a more powerful scope and a pencil

Looks like you had a fun day!

I think the second three ammo groups are around 2", I bet we can come up with a few things can to get you down to your 1" goal. With the 1-4x20mm scope and the good scope mount, you have shown there is great potential.

The first couple of things are pretty simple. Using a 20 round mag, shorten the length of the bipod, to allow less side to side "wiggle". the second is an old USMC trick. They would take a sock (with no holes in it), and fill it about 3/4 full with sand. (I use an empty shot bag with used tumbler media to keep the weight down) Place that under the shoulder end of the butt, or under the pistol grip. Use the pistol grip and your "strong side" hand to pull the rifle into your shoulder and your "off side" hand to grasp the sock or bag. As you bring the crosshair (or aiming dot) onto the aim point, squeeze the bag to stabilize the rear end of the rifle. This makes working on your breath control easier. You also might try to use the smallest target you can clearly see at 100 yards. ( I found 3/4" price tags in the middle of the black Bullseye make a good aim point. I don't know if your eyes are up to that, if not try 1". The idea is the saying "Aim small, miss small!" These are easy and don't cost a whole lot.

After a few tries with the smaller target you may or may not want to try just using the plane, blank, back side of the target with the aim points spaced about 4 to 5 inches apart. [This just saves paper and trips down range. ] I would bet that after a good session you will find that one of those ammos, shoots better the others and is under your 1" goal.

Have fun!

Ivan

Here is an my first AR that I own and the first I assembled from scratch. Targets shown are the first 3 after zeroing the rifle shot at 100 yards from a padded rest. Since then, using Fr. & Rr rests I've been able to shoot consecutive 3 shot groups under 3/10. BTW, it was Not a cheap build and the accuracy is due to a 20 inch Shilen barrel in a Gibbz side charging upper, fit between both was as perfect as possible (had to use a nylon hammer to drive it home the last 1/4 inch).

Since then I've built a second 16 inch Carbine in 300 BLK and a 2nd 16inch AR in 223 Wylde. Both of these shoot in the range of 3/4 MOA with a 3-9 power scope. So, getting 1 MOA out of an AR is possible if a medium profile barrel is used and you develop a hand load tuned specific to the rifle.

Note, I have NEVER shot one single round of commercial 223 and just one box of 300 BLK. All barrels "whip" around a bit as the bullet transits the barrel and one key to getting the finest accuracy is to "time" your load so that the bullet exits the muzzle as it's passing "center".
