2 3/4" Security Six.
I've been watching a blued 157 series 2 3/4" Security Six for the last 6 months or so in successive guns shows. Today he had it priced right and I took it home as a companion for my stainless steel Speed Six.
It's a 157 series revolver made in 1981. The Speed Six is a 1984 160 series revolver.
The adjustable sights and square butt are the key features of the Security Six, and the 2 3/4" barrel Security Sixes are the least common of the Security Sixes. (They are however a lot more common than the 4" Speed Sixes in .38 Special or 9mm, those go for pretty serious money).

Nice.
I'd love to get another 4" blued Speed Six in .357.

DANG! I've been looking for one just like that for years! Just can't seem to stumble across one around here.
I'm extremely jealous!
Congratulations!

These are by far my favorite of the Ruger DA revolvers. The Security Six had a short span of only 16 yrs (1972-88) compared to the GP100 which has been in it's 33rd year of production currently (1985-present).

Great catch sir, and equally great pictures. I just sold my snub here on SWF; absolutely nothing wrong with it at all. I think you may be a little bit off on it's production date, though. I bought mine in the Fall of 1980 and it had a 156- serial, and yours appears to have the older style frame. Either way, you can't go wrong with one ... they are the true poor man's Model 19 ...

Did you grab it? What was the asking price? I've had several in that barrel length over the years and am always on the lookout for more in good condition.

I don't think you can go wrong with any Security Six.
And you've got a nice one!

I bought it. I paid $500 but that's back down in sane money range, compared to what he was asking at previous shows.
It's about $100 more than a 4" or 6" Security Six in similar condition would sell for, but still priced right.

We bought a blue 2 3/4" Speed-Six for my wife (now my ex) back in the late 70's?...Maybe early 80's. That thing shot like a million bucks. We had a better chance of winning the lottery than getting a CHP back in those days, but I always thought it would be a good carry gun. Heavy as a tank, but back then I was young and didn't think about such nonsense.

Yes, sorry, I typed "154" rather than "157". This one is an early 157 series dating from 1981.
I'm interested in your reference to new and old style frames. The only two changes I am aware of is the change from the 150 series slope "low back" grip frame to the upright "high back" grip frame beginning early in the 151 series in 1974, and the switch from the un-scalloped to scalloped recoil shield that began showing up early in the 158 series.
There are a couple barrel changes as well. The warning label on the barrel showed up on Ruger firearms starting around 1975, and Ruger started using a heavier barrel profile in 1979.
Interestingly, scalloped frames started showing up in early 158 series revolvers in 1982, but non scalloped frames have been seen in late 159 series revolvers, making it a transition period that is nearly 2 years in length. If you have a 156 series Security Six with a scalloped frame, that would pre-date the normally accepted start date and that would be very interesting.
The top straps are reported to be thicker on the scalloped Service Sixes and Speed Sixes .25" thick compared to .20" thick. I'm not aware of any change in stop strap thickness on the adjustable sight frame revolvers.

Great find !!
Picked up my Police Service Six earlier this year. Great shooter. 157 series ... 1981. It is the first SA/DA revolver I've owned in 30 years.
Loving it !!!

I managed to get to the range today after work and before dark. Turns out it shoots just fine. 6 rounds, 12 yards offhand, with my 125 gr XTP .357 self defense load:
I put a couple more cylinders of that load through then a hundred 158 gr .38 Specials.
I like shooting my Speed Six, but it shot about an inch and a half left at 12 yards, so it doesn't get carried much.
This Security Six needed some significant sight adjustment but shoots to point of aim. The DA trigger is also excellent, smooth and light for a DA revolver. I liked it so much it went home in my IWB holster and my 686+ is now living in the console safe in my truck.
