Default Coonan .357 semiauto.

Anyone shot one of these?
Loving mine. Great gun and a real head turner at the range.

Yes I really enjoy mine. I have the 5” classic and reload for it. With the light 10# recoil spring it fires a hot 38+P+ reliably, with the 14# spring it works with light magnums and with the 22# spring it shoots full power magnums comfortably. I also like the more parallel grip of the Coonan vs a normal 1911. No effort needed to activate the grip safety. The factory trigger is also quite good.

I had the compact version as well but traded it as it was not as much fun.

Yeah, totally agree. Being a semiautomatic I though it may be fussy with ammo but that’s not the case. I’ve put a lot of factory and reloads through mine with very few problems.

My shooting buddy has one. It's the Coonan Classic. He had to send his back for a cracked slide. It cracked close to the extractor. They replaced the slide but it took them almost 6 months to do it. The jury is out in my mind. I wasn't overly impressed with it. I thought it was too heavy and the size of the grip is quite large. He likes it, that's all that matters. Lot's of talk about the future of Coonan. They were in some financial distress. I just checked their website and it looks like they are still having difficulties.

I work at a high end resort in Colorado where we do a pretty extensive shooting program. We also host many companies for retreats etc. Last year, we had one of the big publishing companies host an event with us where many of the shooting sports companies and writers were flown in to see and shoot stuff at our range. I had the opportunity to examine and shoot a Coonan .357. I was not that impressed with the fit and finish of the firearm. The guy they sent looked like a watch salesman, you know the kind wearing the raincoat that he flips opened and askes if you want to buy a watch! Sort of big and clunky.

I have one of the original Coonans. It was the 355th one made. It has a barrel link like older 1911’s. Love shooting it, still do every now and then. I think I bought it in the 80’s.

I only own revolvers, but have had this on my list as my first pistol, since reading the write-up on it in the recent 'Concealed Carry' buyer's guide magazine. Oddly, they compare it to a Kimber revolver.

I bought one new about twenty years ago. It shot every ammo I tried in it.. Just changed the recoil spring when I went from 38 special to 357 magnum..Recoil was mild even with 357 hand loads..
Traded it for something else I wanted at the time..

Not sure really what to make of the above comments regarding the Coonan .357, but I talked with a friend today who has four of them, and loves them. I'll probably get one regardless, as the reviews I've read, other than on this forum, and the opinion of my friend, have been great.

The Coonan longslide I handled had the above mentioned fit & finish challenges that turned me off at the price the shop was asking. Slide to frame fit was sloppy, tooling marks everywhere, and gently shaking it had a discernible rattle. I’ve got a grizzly 357, and the two are not in the same quality league. Like the earlier post; +p 38 special are really fun, especially since it chucks the brass like 20’ downrange (don’t mind losing 38 brass vs my 357 brass)

My friend has a pair of the early ones. I’ve shot one of them and it shoots great and I like the look which reminds me of the old Colt 1900-02 .38 autos. I was shooting a .38 Long Colt once and my friend stuck one in his Coonan and shot it but of course it was too weak to work the slide. They are great guns.

I like shooting mine, except for the fact that I reload and when shooting 357 Mag it chucks the brass into the next county. So it doesn't get as much range time as my revolvers or my ATI 45 Auto 1911.

But it does blow beautiful fire when you shoot some H110 loads in it.

I acquired a Coonan compact from a fellow member here and it is my new favorite hands down. The gun shoots straight, reliable and handles recoil extremely well. My only issue currently is that Coonan is closed and I am having a ton of trouble getting more mags for it! I hope they open back up soon because I need at least 3 more mags for this unicorn! If anyone knows a place that currently has them I would appreciate it.

I was lucky in that right after I bought mine 4 years ago, I found someone selling 3 mags on Guns International for a good price. I bought them, bringing my mag count up to 5.

As far as Coonan goes, it isn't looking real good to me that they will stay in business. There is a thread on another forum that I've been following off and on and it looks like Coonan has been throwing out lifelines but it doesn't seem to me that they are getting any takers. It's a shame as the pistol itself is really cool.

Coonan is closed right now going through a re-organization or buy-out.

They are not answering the phones or emails.
