Default Iconic 22's

Ok, I'm sure there will be some controversy, but please keep it friendly: What 22 long and short guns do you consider iconic?

I'll put the first target out there: Handuns - Ruger MK I or MK II, Smith K22, Ruger Single Six. For long guns I'd say the Winchester pump (they had a few model numbers) Stevens break action (again several names but all the same gun), Remington 552 and Ruger 10/22, Marlin bolt action.

22 lever actions were cool and in a lot of photos, but I never saw many. Winchester and Remington made some great high end bolt rifles but I saw 20 Marlin bolt guns for every high end 22 that I saw.

Correct me...

Ponder, you really know how to start an argument. Any "iconic" list of .22s has to include (very near the top) the Colt Woodsman. For rifles, no list would be complete without the Browning Automatic.

This maybe a little of the beaten path, but I think the czech 22 rifles have a strong classic style (models 1,2,3,4,5 452, 453, 455). To me, they have come to epitomize the simple stylish utility of European sporting guns. I have a 452 and a model 3. I guess I shouldn't count a BRNO hornet. The 22lrs are both tough as nails. Stout, durable guns!

Since you opened with a S&W K-22 on your list, - S&W 1st Model, 1st issue. What's a more iconic 22 than the first one!

I’m fortunate to have a Model 41 (heavy barrel), Model 34 Kit Gun, Model 71 Beretta, and first generation Colt Woodsman. Also, have my Dad’s 1906 Winchester pump. All, in my mind, iconic. For personal reasons I would note that my Remington Nylon 66 is also iconic. I fired thousands of rounds through it without a jam, and hunted woodchucks over several summers at northern NJ dairies before the dairies were recycled into housing developments. Thus I have shot that Nylon 66 more than all my other firearms combined, and it never failed to shoot.

I’d have to say the S&W model 34. A couple of weeks ago I bought a nickel 4” unfired. Beautiful pistol.

Browning designs are always appropriate in any discussion about iconic .22s.

Winchester Model '90, this one in .22 Long Rifle, not one of the more common chamberings for the Winchester Model 1890.

Default HANDGUN AND RIFLES???

That's gonna be some LONG & hotly debated list. People seem to believe what THEY HAVE is better than what somebody else has. Others are buying "mostly" due to a low price point. To some "HIGH PRICE must = the best", Others are somewhere in between, like me. IDK, TEHO. I could put a like on every post so far, & many more to come.

The Marlin 39 and its predecessors have been manufactured longer than any other American rifle, the last I heard. That should qualify as "iconic", whatever that means to the beholder.

The two I owned were superb--man-sized, very accurate, absolutely dependable, and in my eyes beautiful.

The Winchester model 69As in their many variations are starting to get the recognition they warrant.

The Winchester model 1890/90 was on my iconic lust list when I was a kid.

Have an old Winchester 52B made the same year I was 1946. And lets not forget the little BSA series of single shot 22's. I have a model 12 with the original iron sights. Plus a Canadian model 13 which was originally a take down but not any longer. Barrel was installed without the take down notch and extractor was surface ground to match the breech end of the barrel. The cocking lever was really messed up and got lucky when I bought one from a gent in England. Usually these are hand fitted so that the firing pin hits just inside the rim of a 22 cartridge. The replacement fit just right. Still have to fit the buttstock. Now with the cheaper prices on 22rf ammo can shoot for a long time for less than a $20 bill. Frank

As a competitive target pistol the Walther Olympia model of 1936 deserves an honorable mention as an iconic gun. It helped Germany to win 5 medals in the 1936 olympics with its advanced design and the Haemmerli International was developed out of it. The Olympia changed target pistol technology from striker fired guns to internal hammers being employed.

Default Don't even remember the Model number!

1956.............11 years old...........Santa left off at our house a Mossberg, bolt action, single shot, 22 LR rifle. Since I was the oldest boy in the family it seemed to be mine.....but had to wait (VERY impatiently) for Mom & Dad to come down...and then wait again till back from church and bacon, eggs and waffles consumed.....boy.............long haul from approx. 3:00 am till that beauty (high polish blue, iron sights, plain jane all the way) was in my hands.

I know EXACTLY how Ralphie felt. I also remember Pop making me read (out loud) the safety and cleaning instructions, and about 2 days later...a single box of 22 LR ammo appeared from nowhere...........and albeit "supervised"..........the start of a life time love and passion for shooting sports began.

As my title says.........I cannot for the life of me even remember the Mossberg Model number, but I do remember I was the only farm kid around that had a single shot...everyone else had repeaters (pumps, levers, semi-autos). I say now...Pop knew darn well what I needed....I had to be a heck of a lot more cautious when out for squirrels, crows, even woodchucks (close in) cause I had only one opportunity to do it right, or the pot went empty.

The best? Most iconic?....Beats the daylights outa me, but I'll always remember that Mossberg, and always regret trading that guy away as a kid stretched into a gangly teenager with a need for more firepower.

OP: This is a great thread.........there cannot be any losers....only winners.....everything posted is "iconic", "quintessential", "fabulous", "best of the best" or however each poster sees his/her own treasure.

The OP Needs to define the term Iconic.
Most here will post what they have or what they want!
So I’ll post what I have.
Model 17, Model 46 and HiStandard HDM.
I probably prefer ‘Classic’ over ‘Iconic.’

How many of you older guys did your first shooting with one of these?

I like to think of it as the early version of a 10/22 but you only had 1 shot to hit that squirrel instead of 10 to 25 shots. (Not especially a bad idea....)

The Stevens Favorite is about as iconic as you can get. (At least for this old goat..)

Right on with the HS HD-Military!!

This the only actual "Family Gun " that I own. It was bought by my brother-in-law when he was fresh back from the South Pacific at the end of WW2. I have the box, paperwork and original hang-tag.

I'll add my support for the Winchester 1890 as an iconic ".22", but less so for .22 LR. In .22 short it was pretty much "the" gallery gun from 1890 through the mid 20th century and I remember seeing them at carnivals in my youth in the 1970s.

This one is in .22 LR, but .22 LR represented only about 12% of Model 1890 production:

The Ruger 20/22 is also an iconic .22 LR, even though it has only been around since 1964. I prefer the earlier examples in wood and walnut with metal butt plates and metal trigger housings.

The Ruger 77/22 should also count. It was one of the more persistent adult sized, higher end .22 LR rifles from its introduction in 1984 to it's discontinuation 32 years later in 2016.

This one is a 1984 vintage 77/22:

The Ruger Single Six and the Ruger Standard and Mk I through III are also iconic .22 LRs:

I'll also include the Model 52 in all its forms. I'm a big fan of the sporters, including the Model 52 Re-issue rifles made by Miroku in the 1980s.

These are great! I forgot about the Colt Woodsman and Remington 66, I have seen them but never shot one. Also forgot the High Standard. I never heard of the Winchester 52.

A few said I should define "iconic." Well that would have made it a lot less fun. I guess to me iconic implies somewhat affordable, not cheap, but affordable enough that there were a lot of them around. Anschutz made some beautiful guns but outside of serious competitions no one ever sees them - compare that to the Stevens break actions that myself and a few others mentioned - a lot of closets had one of them in their day. But this was interesting to me and made me remember a few guns that I need to try to shoot.

The Stevens Favorite was my first .22. I dug it out of a foot of mud after the 1951 flood. It was my great uncles and he wouldn't go back to his old house to salvage it. I was twelve and at that time one box of .22s lasted a while. I used it while I coveted the Winchester pumps. It's the second from the bottom in the picture.

They are great guns.I like it because their external hammer as opposed to the Colt Woodsman which I also have.Mine is from 1947 and sports a 6 3/4 inch barrel.

Iconic long-guns that come to mind are:

Marlin 39A
Winchester 52
Winchester 9422
Winchester 62A

Hand guns:

S&W M18 or M17
S&W M63/34
S&W M41
High Standard Trophy
Colt .22 Revolvers
Colt Woodsman, Targetsman and Huntsman

While I am not a Ruger fan and don't really care much for them, the Ruger 22. Mark series has been an icon for low priced entry level Auto Pistols for umpteen years.

I see no one has mentioned the Jennings et al. Perhaps not everyones cup of tea, but definitely iconic.

I've owned dozens of 22's over the years. Short and long.

These days, I'm down to just a few.

Since I've got two of the K-22 "Combat Masterpiece," I figure it qualifies.

And the only rifle I've still got, I feel should be on anyone's list.

Ruger 10/22 "Wally World Special." I don't know how many of these Wal-Mart sold, but I'll bet it was a bunch of them. The longer barrel, and full size stock make it feel like a "big rifle."

I used to have a 77/22 and it's one of the few guns I am sorry I sold.

I considered the Ruger 77/22 because I wanted one when I was poor. But they weren't widespread. Probably because they cost 4x what a Marlin bolt gun cost and at least 2.5x what a 10/22 cost.

I am surprised that Weatherby has not been brought up yet. In my opinion all the older Weatherbys are iconic but for this discussion the Weatherby Mark XXII is one of the most beautiful 22's made back in the day. So for rifle that is my pick and for handgun 22 the High Standards get my nod. All the models from the cheapest all the way up to thier top models were iconic. Its the reason I own 4 dofferent High Standards and they all are very accurate and the cheapest model the Duramatic is just as awsome to shoot as The Victor they both just eat bullseyes into a big ragged hole!!

Lots of fantastic .22s on this list and I’m fortunate enough to own a handful.

Any love for the lowly Remington 572 Fieldmaster? Despite my many iconic 22s (K-22, Win 1890, 62A, etc) my old 572 likely gets the most use these days.

Iconic to me is a gun that almost everyone knows what it is. Classic is a well made gun from the milled parts, blue steel and wood stocked guns.
There are Iconic guns that are not classics.

I don't hardly know where to start but here goes. Marlin 39 Mountie, Ruger Single Six, Mark I, Ruger Bearcat, Smith and Wesson Model 17, 18, 41, High Standard Trophy's and Citation's, Beretta 76's, Colt Trooper .22--6", for some reason I'm drawing a blank right now so this will do for now.

Where to start. Currently it’s CZ rifles; models 452,453, 455.
There’s a Stevens Crackshot just as a memory maker. I’ve had
a bunch of nice handguns. Currently Rugers. Recently sold
a Smith pre-model 17 and a Colt Officers Match from 1934.
Probably should have kept more of ‘em. All icons to me.

Yea, but they're worth it.

I had two at one time. One of them had a heavy bull barrel, I forget what brand now. That thing shot really tiny holes. I didn't keep it too long, I found out shooting groups at the range really didn't interest me too much and it was way to heavy to use for anything else. It went on down the road.

The other one, a first year production model was just beautiful. It had a 2x7 Simmons (made in Japan) scope. I bought it used, and never had to touch the scope. It shot right where I wanted it to shoot, right from the start. Maybe not as good at the range as the bull barrel model, but I don't recall ever missing a squirrel with it. I'm sure I did and I just have blocked them out of my memory.

Alas, I had to sell that one during my personal economic downturn. I don't usually have any regrets about selling a gun, but I do that one.

I found a couple of pictures of it.

As I’m still relatively new and dont have the history many here do, for me it’s this (‘51) Colt Challenger that i find iconic. It may not get as much love as the Woodsman does and this particular one definitely isnt any collector piece, but it was my inlaws since new and handed down to me several years ago to get me in this hobby.

Now as i slowly add to my collection, my Buckmark may end up being the same...... someday going to my grandson and he can find that one as iconic. 😉

I don't know about iconic but they sure were prolific at one time. Strangely, I haven't seen one around in a good while. There still has to be a bunch floating around.
