Default The Ultimate Beater 22

I had to go into the safe today to retrieve some paper work, and saw this beauty sitting there, this flower of German engineering, this revolver that was as much a part of me in my youth as my right arm...a ROHM 22/22 mag. Back in my teens, I ran a substantial trap line. It was at a fur sale that I traded someone 10 muskrat pelts for this beauty, and I sure worked it hard in the years I was trapping...through thick and thin it never let me down. Now a days its relegated to shooting mice in the basement with birdshot, but back in the day it was my favorite. Anyone else want to actually admit they have one?

That's your "diamond in the rough". I believe Herters carried Rohm six-shooters back in the day, and sold tons of them. Wish I still had mine. I'd be proud to own her.

I won't slander a working gun - as in a gun that has a role to fill and does it just fine.

Can't think of anything else I'd rather shoot mice in a basement with, and it has served you well for years, so it seems to me to be a good gun.

As I remember it; these were inexpensively made in West Germany to compete against the Colt and Ruger examples. I owned one at one time and it was a servicable revolver in every sense.

The first handgun I owned was an RG. Somehow back in the dark ages before Ozone Al invented the interweb, I located a set of walnut stocks for mine. Never had an issue with it. Paid either $20 or $25 for it.

At first glance I mistook it for a Heritage Arms Rough Rider, which go for around $125-$175 New depending on the model.

Back in the late 60s I ordered one from the Herters catalogue, after about 2 months of waiting (and driving them crazy asking where was my gun) I got a letter from them saying there was a problem importing them at the time so they cancelled order. I bought another .22, an H&R 900, but always wondered how the Herters .22 would have been. To this day I have never seen one, I still have the H&R.

I had a Herters and it had a wierd angle grip frame. There were a lot of different brands and a lot of them were the same. RG was not and I don't remember if Herters was made by RG.

I think most dogging the Rohm .22s have never even owned one, much less fired one.

For the price, they were superb little shootin’ irons. Well made (German, duh) and affordable, shooting a cheap shell. What’s not to like?

Roehm started producing gas and starter guns in Germany in the 1950s and those guns were the basis for the Roehm .22 shorts and .22 l.r.
I had owned probably a shoebox full of them and some shot pretty well and reliably. Some did not.

By the way, Willi Korth started out producing tear gas revolvers, too, and that design developed into the Korth Police.

I’d rather have a Rohm than any Heritage RR. With the German Rohm, you get far more quality for the value. A used Rohm can be had for less than a Heritage if you shop around.

Some foreign made .22s are great shooters. My little "Buffalo Scout" .22 "identifies" as a Colt Frontier Scout and who am I to judge? It shoots great and has a tight action. That holster next to it (bottom pic) was a right hander I changed to lefty when I was a kid. My first holster project. The Ruger was my first gun with a Hunter holster my dad fitted to me. He also made a new laced metal reinforced "pouch"for the hunter holster.

The first gun I ever confiscated on the street was a Rohm 22 short revolver in a woman's purse in front of a Methadone Clinic while walking a beat in Detroit.
