CMP 1911
A buddy of mine got his CMP 1911 this week. Colt upper over a Remington lower. It is the service grade and came in a FDE pelican style case with a certificate of authenticity. It's nice. Enjoy....

That’s a nice one!
My number is 10809, so I’m optimistic I’ll get one of next batch. Fingers crossed.

Very nice, much better than the super light grey parked finish most of this CMP batch seemed to have had.

$1050. It has the parkerized "shadow" common with these guns. It's an Augusta Arsenal 1970's-ish rework. No markings on the mag. On the back right side of the frame there's what looks to be part of a Springfield stamping but it is mostly missing. Serial number verifies the frame as a RR.

You may be closer than you think, I got mine yesterday, and I was number 10462. Beautiful Remington Rand, matching slide and frame. In fact everything except the thumb safety, grip safety, and barrel bushing appear to be original RR Parts. The best part to me was they still had Service, Rack and Field grades available so I had a choice, this one is service grade ($1050).
No idea how that works since the estimate was only about 7,500 of the original 8,000 would be available, apparently a lot did not complete the purchase.
Anyone have an idea about the ‘MB’ stamp on the rear of the slide? It’s not an Arsenal Stamp that I can find, all the other markings including the barrel are known correct Remington Rand Stamps or Inspector Marks.

Wow, that is a nice one!
A guy on another board supposedly did a Freedom of Information Act request to the Army on his serial number and found the Army had transferred it to CMP in Sept 2019, which would mean they are working their way through the second batch.
Fingers crossed.

I went with the new US Army auto ordnance, Springfield Armory GI mil spec in 2005 I got tired of the over pricing on the originals. The new AO was $389 the new SA was $424. I enjoy both, they run ammo flawlessly and everything matches.

Those and Rock Island Armory pistols make nice shooters and they are inexpensive. Military surplus and Colt's make nice pistols that hold long term value.

No doubt you can get a knock off 1911 for less than a real GI 1911. I have some.
You can also get a Universal M-1 carbine for cheap, too. But it will never be a USGI carbine.
I get it. CMP was too much of a hassle, you didn’t want to jump through hoops, or wait for a year. Its too much money - you used to get them for $25, they’re not all matching - on and on and on.......
But to about 19,000 of us it was worth it.

I don't know what my number was and had pretty much stopped thinking about getting one until I got a call last week. I choose the service grade but have not received it yet.

They were warsman’s pistols, not showrooms.
When you’re knee deep on Iwo fighting banzais, or have a squad of Nazis 50 yards away with an MG42 blasting at you, the last thing you’re worried about is a crooked stamping on your pistol slide.

How long was it from the time they called you until you received yours? I got a call last week and was just curious how long they are taking to get them out.

They charged my CC and shipped it the same day they received the FFL from my LGS.
Follow-up with them, my guy told me he sent it by email, and he is as reliable as they come. A couple of days later I asked the young lady if she had received and was told they had not, odd I thought. In any case he sent it again, and that afternoon I got the FedEx Priority Overnight shipping confirmation, it arrived the next day. All CMP shipping is overnight.

My CMP 1911, a service grade, is the worst case example. Mismatch, bead blasted, arsenal refinished in the 70s. A guy on a smaller forum I go to got a field grade and it's a beaut. Not sure where everybody is living with super cheap USGI 1911s, but this is still well under private sale pricing. If I just wanted a shooter, I'd absolutely snag the first $300 used Rock Island I ran into, and it would be reliable and shoot about the same, I just couldn't turn down a legit USGI 1911.

Add 50+ years of 19 year old kids knocking them around and you can develop quite a patina. The arsenal refinished CMP guns look a lot better then the 1911s we were issued in the 80s when our unit converted from wheeled to mechanized.

I got mine a couple of weeks ago. I guess they ran out of those pretty fresh from the arsenal rebuilds. Mine has seen some use. Its got character.
BTW: No arsenal rebuild marks.

It is a grab bag. I got a R-R slide & frame gun that has been re-arsenaled. Still a great piece for just over $1k.

Well, if the stars line up and I get a call and actually answer and my credit card works and my transmission doesn't fall out before then and all 3 grades are available then my plan is to go for the field grade.
I want one that looks like Grayfox's. Even though his is a service grade, most service grades I've seen have that reparked-and-put-away look. I figure a field grade won't be a recent repark but will be better than a ratty rack grade.
If I had any nutz at all I'd go for a rack grade, but I'm hedging my bet and shooting for the middle ground.
Honestly, I've gotten more enjoyment out of the delayed gratification of this crazy CMP system than just walking in a store and buying one. If they do a second round of applications I'll be in that one, too.

Yee haw! Got the call this morning - number 10809 finally made it to the top!
I had a choice of field or rack grade and went with the field grade. With any luck I’ll have it in my grubby mitts tomorrow!

Be sure to post pics. So far everybody else is getting a service grade. I'm curious as just what a field grade will look like.

According to the CMP website they haven't received any more pistols other than the original allotment of 8000. There is nothing about a 2nd shipment on the CMP forum either. Because the numbers are in the 10K range only means that many opted out of the purchase when contacted which could be expected. The cost to apply was less than $10. That's different than putting 1K on your CC a year after you sent in paperwork. As many have stated, they didn't want to wait.
I bought an HK45 with the money but now I'm having second thoughts about this. I think they're close to the bottom of the pile but my # is still too high so I'm going back to sleep.

Check out the CMP forum, especially the closed threads. There are posts from CMP officials that tell a different story, even if they are being cagey about it. They definitely got at least one more gun if the FOIA story is true.
No matter, the sooner they get through 19,000 packages, the sooner I can get back in line.

Roger that. I didn't spend a lot of time looking at the forum, just going by their website. They may be hiding the fact of 2nd shipment to reduce the craziness they had to deal with last year when first announced. Maybe it's a closely guarded secret.
I did note that 10745 wasn't offered a service grade. All gone.
They could be setting on shipment #2 until they sell everyone of those in #1, which could be any day.

Nope, just two lower grades. I was planning on a field grade anyway, so it worked out.
I’ve read they bust open a crate at a time and that’s what the sell until they’re gone. I know several times they only offered service grades, then a little later other grades were available as well. Its a mysterious process.

What the heck is "Rack Grade"? I'd want NRA Excellent grade! I guess you have to grab those where and if you find one.

When they called me on 12/3/19 they had all 3 grades available. I choose service. I have not yet received it but they have charged my credit card.

I'm too lazy also but I remember something to that effect. You lose your place in line forever and your app gets shredded.

I’d be happy with field grade.

I would guess if you don't take one when they call you will not get another chance but I don't know that for sure. I do know you can go to the auction and buy one. The people who take one when they are called can not buy one in the auction.

Just read a post by the mod over on the CMP forum. More or less says the number of available pistols is now classified on a need-to-know basis and you don't need to know how many they have.
If I had to place a small wager I would bet they have more, lots more.

I picked my field grade up today, and it is exactly what I wanted.
First, this is a really nice case.
Its a Remington Rand slide on a Remington Rand frame.
I didn't want a recent repark, and I certainly got that. I don't think its ever been refinished since its original finish departed sometime between 1944 and now.
Some Frank J Atwood goodness. It also has the "assembly mark" pre-installed, saving me the trouble.
Still has its rack number - 11.
The barrel is a replacement, marked HS which I would guess is High Standard.
I wanted one that looked like it had been somewhere and done something, and I got that in spades. The only slight downer was the magazine they included - a new Mec Gar. That's an easy fix, though.
I'll shoot it tomorrow.

Very nice. Originally I wanted a service grade but I already have plenty of shooters. Your field grade is more appealing to me with the 'I've been used' finish. I don't want a refinished gun either. Thanks for posting the pics. Made my choice, if I ever get one, much easier.

I got out to the range for a bit. 100 rounds of 230 grain ball (WWB and Armscor). No malfunctions and it shot well. Number One Son outshot me for the first time today - those young eyes! Now he wants one.

I received my 1911 A1 from CMP today. It has a Colt slide and a Remington Rand frame I believe based on the inspection marks from Frank J. Atwood. Also believe it was made in 1944. I am very happy with it and the nice case it came in.

sigp220: That looks better than I expected for a Rack Grade. Congratulations.
How's the trigger on it? Mine has the typical G.I. trigger. Absolutely horrible! My gauge read an average of 8lbs 120z.
I put new standard springs in it and lightly polished the hammer and sear. Didn't get carried away with a full trigger job as I do want it be a true example of a G.I. gun. Its cleaner and smoother now, but still gauges at 7 lbs.
BTW: mine came with a new Meggar magazine too. But I've got a couple of marked Army issue mags laying around.

CMP is chugging along with distribution. RNG is now somewhere around 10900 being called. That seems odd that it's so high considering that only 8K were initially identified. I'm hoping they have a few thousand more. If they do I'm going to have one.

Mine is a field grade, so at least theoretically it is better than a rack grade. The trigger on mine is pretty good - I haven’t measured it but its on a par with my commercial 1911s.
A guy on Facebook posted he got the call today with an RGN in the 10900s. He was offered all 3 grades, so they must have busted open a new crate. I’m sure they are well into the second allotment from the Army, but are being discrete for good reasons known only to them.
