Ruger Mark ll Tale (update.... 2nd Mark ll)
Having three Ruger Mark lll pistols, always wanted a Mark ll.
Spotted this one priced WAY too high at a LGS couple of years ago. I kept an eye on it wondering how long it would sit before falling to a semi- reasonable price.
Saw on the news that LGS had a break-in/burglary. Sure enough this pistol was amongst the stolen. The owner said this Ruger was one of the recovered pistols locked into evidence until the trial was over. Two years later, there it sits a little banged up and priced fairly. Negotiated an OTD price and it's finally home.
This pistol had a clean breach and bolt.... I doubt it had ever been field stripped. I've heard of the spray and compressed air method of cleaning these pistols... it may look clean and function, but, I'll guarantee it's horrendously dirty on the inside.

The Mark II was the pinnacle of a fantastic design. Better than it's predecessors by a little bit, far better than it's successors.
I'd never part with my circa 1994 KMK-512.

Just got a Mk II this year and the insides of that thing were filthy. Wonder if the previous owner ever took it apart.

Welcome to the MK2 club. I dropped some VQ parts in mine although it shoots just fine as is.

I recently came in possession of a Mark I, it shoots straighter that I can hold it.
Have a blessed day,

Good buy, misswired! I bought a new Ruger Standard (a Mark I with a short tapered barrel and fixed sights) in 1974, and I still have it. It has the best trigger of any gun I have ever shot. When read about Mark IV owners complaining about their triggers, I wonder what Ruger has done to mess them up. I can't imagine any Mark I or Standard owners complaining about their triggers. I even enjoy field stripping and cleaning mine. (I like challenges! ) In any case, I'll never sell it.

This 84' model has a very nice trigger. Easily shot the nozzles off of hanging spray paint cans using the cheap red-dot.
Field strip and assembly was a pain requiring a hammer and punch.... an hour or so of tinkering on an upcoming cold winter day will take care of that.
It's serial number 19-16@@@@
ETA. It may be a late 1983 model according to the chart.

I have a 4 3/4" standard MKII that I bought new back in the early 80s I
think. I'll have to get it out and check the serial number against the
chart to see. Great pistol, very accurate when I do my part.

Comments above about the PITA nature of the Ruger disassembly and re-assembly after cleaning reminded me of an ad I have seen a few times. It is for a device known as the Hammer Strut Support. Ruger MK Reassembly-the One-Time Fix Hammer Strut Support
I confess that I have avoided regular cleaning of my Ruger Mark II because it always hard to remember the 312 steps which must be done in the proper order, etc.
Has anybody tried this device? Does it solve the problem mentioned above? It is only $15 so not a big gamble, but I'd like to know what others' experience has been.
Thanks.

Mk-IIs are great!
Mine has the 6 & 7/8" slab-sided barrel, and I added some VQ goodies too!
VERY accurate and fun to shoot.

Mark ll Ruger
It was a love affair from the moment I held the first one in my oversized hand. They were reasonably priced and YouTube taught me how to do practically everything I needed to upgrade them to be real fine Target shooters. At 70 yrs old I still own a bunch of them in various configurations, scoped, dotted, and open sighted they are dollar for dollar one of the all time greatest. Somewhere along the journey I acquired the most accurate open sighted pistol of all time for me and you guessed it, it's a MKll and it's UGLY & GAUDY. It's one of the MKll commerative honoring the U S ARMY. GOLD Leaf scroll gold sights you name it, it's there and on steroids, but it's a off hand open sighted shooter. I bought it brand spanking new a couple years ago and I honestly don't believe it's missed as yet. Spooky to say the least. It will be sold at my estate sale, the last to go. You won't see me shooting it but when I need to shoot dimes or dot my i's I'll be on the far side of the range "getting er done."

Have to agree! After a few days of shooting last weeks pistol, made an offer today on a 1991 like new stainless. The stainless is in a lot better shape with an extra magazine..... for about the same money.
These Mark ll's will grow on a fellow.

After having my Clark Custom for at least 15 years I finally got up enough nerve to take it down.
Written directions , from Ruger , in front of me , it took a few false starts and a bad word or two but I discovered (learned a trick or two ) how to do it. Now I'm no longer afraid !
The big trick for me was using the bolt stop pin from the top to get the barrel/frame aligned , the barrel can be moved too far back or not far enough forward , makes exact alignment tricky .
Getting the end of the hammer strut into the oval cut in the main spring housing is the next tricky part but the directions from Ruger helped a lot .
After I got the process down pat , I wrote down every step , took notes and drew diagrams of what I did and how .... I don't want to forget how this little song and dance is done...
This Clark Custom MKII puts a smile on my face , such a sweet trigger!

I recently acquired this MKII "Target" along with a couple other guns from a friend. It dates to '91 and from what I can tell it was fired exactly ten rounds. The original box of ammo it was purchased with only had ten missing and the gun is near pristine other than just being stuffed in a gun rug for the last 38 years and moved around the country. Owners manual was there but regretfully no box.

My Ruger MK II is the Government Target version. A very accurate pistol, far better than me, and mine was blessed with a decent trigger. My biggest complaint is the weight of this pistol. I think the tapered barrel target models, like the one pictured by Rubone, have a much nicer balance.

Got my first MKII over 35 years ago, now have three plus a MKIII and MKIV. No doubt the MKII's are my favorite.
If you can change the oil in your car you should be able to field strip any Ruger MK series pistol. They're not that hard.

I bought an MK II from a friend probably thirty years ago for a hundred bucks. Not having the gun manual I had no idea how to do a filed strip take down. I know it was over ten years with unknown number of ammo bricks shot through it before I found on the internet how to field strip clean it. I don't think the gun ever misfired or jammed in all those years not being cleaned. All those years the gun was just wrapped in a cloth and kept in a drawer. This gun has no rust or corrosion and still fires perfectly. How many guns could make that claim?

Darn you guys, I found a 1991 Mark II Target while cruising gun shops today. I have it on the desk now, $400 OTD. Now I need a few more magazines.

My LGS had a mkI & mkII priced $125 each decades ago. I bought both. One was so leaded up it could shoot for the po I’m sure. I disassembled both pistols for a USGI cleaning and lubing. Screaming deal.

Looks just like mine! Except mine is wearing a scope, which I think I'll remove because it make an already heavy pistol even heavier.

My "Competition Target" Mk.II has always felt too heavy, BUT ...
the slab-sided barrel gives it such a nice balance!, and I can deal with the weight - helps with aiming/accuracy.
If I had a place where I could wear it or take it into the field I would want a lighter gun, but this baby is a range gun.

I actually prefer the Mark III because they were all D/T'd for a rail. You can put a LCI filler blank in them, and remove the goofy mag interlock. But I also prefer the mag release location too.
That being said, I have a Mark II lower on the way to me to mate to a Mark II stainless Comp Slabside upper I have. Right now I have 4 uppers, and only 2 lowers.

I must admit I like my MKIII slabside just fine, it is very accurate and great to shoot. I also like the mag release location and scope mount drilling.
