Default A blade by Ben Hayhurst

A friend of mine had a knife + sheath made for me prior to my deployment next month. He asked what I liked, I said tanto points, and it went from there.

Turns out his knifemaker neighbor is Ben Hayhurst, a real pro who works mostly in very fancy damascus steel blades.

Custom Knives by Ben Hayhurst

Here's what he created for me. Absolutely fantastic quality. Before anyone asks, yes I shoot rifle left-handed.

Thanks. It's a train-the-locals mission, but in southwest Asia, so there's always a chance for something truly dangerous. I'm an officer, but I don't sit behind a desk (at least not yet) so it's not just for photo ops.

I LOVE the knife. But what I would love even better is your coming home after your deployment never having drawn it!

I too received a knife as a gift before going to the sandbox my dad bought me a Remington hunting knife from Walmart... it wasn't the most quality knife, but hey, a gift is a gift, so I treasured it and I carried it with me for about a month before I realized it would never be used for anything, but cutting apples and cleaning my nails behind the wire.

360 days and over 600 TICs later, I'm glad I left the knife behind in lieu of extra 40mm grenades. The only time I ever got close enough to stab anyone was when they were already badly wounded, or they were surrendering so a nice straight punch to the nose was all that was needed. Things have calmed down quite a bit, as far as American casualties are concerned, since my last visit, but it's complacency that will get you and your subordinates killed. Stay alert, stay alive, and listen to your enlisted counterpart. Come home whole sir.

God bless you and keep you safe, and bring you back home to your loved ones.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

By the way: Great looking knife too!

I don't plan on getting in knife fights like some 1980s action flick. It's more about having a good tool to cut anything. Sounds overly simple but it's true. A glass breaker pommel is actually useful as we won't be traveling in uparmored HMMWVs (you aren't breaking that glass in a hurry).

I also carry a folder for stuff like cutting open MREs and such. Two is one and one is none, as they say.
