Default Have you ever accidentally bought a handgun?

It sounds strange but I accidentally bought a handgun about two months ago.

About a year ago I was searching the internet to see when the new Walther PPK’s were being released. As many of you know, it took a long time to get those pistols to market. While searching, I found a sporting goods store that put me on a back order list. They also asked for my local FFL for reference. I figured they would give me a call when it was in-stock (but before they shipped it to my FFL).

Ten months later, I get a call from my FFL saying “your Walther PPK is here”. I had mixed emotions.... excited because I was getting a new gun but nervous because I had not done the appropriate ground work with my wife regarding the cash expenditure. Maybe you’ve never experienced that type of concern but my wife gets a little sensitive at times about my use of cash.

It all worked out as I now have a new .380 and I’m still married.

Just curious, have any of you accidentally baught a gun?

Not yet, but I have sometimes hoped to be outbid on a GB impulse bid.

I've bought identical things on Ebay or Amazon a couple of times accidentally but they were fairly inexpensive items. I once saw an opening bid on a M-10 Pencil barrel for $160 and I bid on it(I don't know why) and totally forgot about it and a few weeks later I was notified that I won the gun. I didn't really want it, the picture was blurry and it had ugly Pachmyers so I was really worried it was going to be a piece of junk but I received the gun and it was in 99% condition with gorgeous bluing and it became one of my favorite shooters!

No, but I accidentally bought a pick-up once. Threw a lowball bid on it on eBay thinking there was no way I'd win it. Had to buy a one way airline ticket to Sacramento to drive it home. My wife wasn't happy about it - even though it was a bargain.

I bought a badly polished, chromed, and gold washed 38/44 heany-duty once just to get the real nice stag grips that were on it. But it wasn't an accident.

Yes. I ended up with two similar guns that were in different online live auctions running almost simultaneously. I put in my electronic bids and sat back, expecting to be outbid on one or both. I must get down the range with them one day.

I own at least two guns thanks to lowball nonsense bids that I don't expect to last.

Yes. More than once

One was an opening bid that I put on a Model 63 and no one ever advanced the price

The other one is a nice little 32 caliber I-Frame

Seeing that a pick up was mentioned, I accidentally bought my 1989 Suburban

Talking

Just last week I went through the drive up at the local burger joint and when I opened the bag there was a 9mm inside. Apparently "cheeseburger and fries" sounds a lot like "Sig P225".

I was accidentally given a cheap piece of junk .380 the other day. A female friend whom I was helping move came across it and asked me to take it or get rid of it. It was loaded with five .380 rounds and she had a half box of 9mm ammo someone had given her for it. I couldn't even get the magazine out, just had to cycle the rounds through it. Total junk.

I can say me and a bottle of black label Jameson have accidentally ordered some fine S&W revolvers and some great 3rd gen semi autos and I always got a kick out of the random Ebay package showing up with a set of targets or magnas in the mail box hahah. Long story short I've been 9 months sober because of it.... priorities right ?

Does going into a gun shop with no real intention to buy anything, but seeing something that you just cannot pass up so you buy it count? If so, that's me!

I'd have a hard time calling it 'accidental', but I have learned to try to avoid the combination of 2+ adult libations and my laptop open to GB in the evening hours.

The Shield .45 I bought was done "accidentally" LOL. I went in to my LGS and saw it and wanted to see how it fit my hand and when I asked what the bottom dollar was and he gave me real low price IF I bought it now so out came the money and I took it home. I was surprised that the wife didn't object too much Have you ever accidentally bought a handgun?

Not a handgun but a rifle. When I heard that Marlin was going to make a .357Mag. rifle I went to the 2 gunshops that I thought had the best chance to get one and had each shop to order me one. Later on 1 shop called and said they had my rifle so I went and picked it up. The next day the other shop called and said they had my rifle so I went and picked it up. I'm pretty sure I bought the first 2 that was sold in my area. Larry

No, always to buy what I got, however, the idea does have merit, I plan to put that in my back pocket for use someday.

I have put a bid or two in on GunBroker after having one too many beers. Didn't necessarily "need" anything I bid on but paid for them and was happy to get them when they arrived, but I can't say I've ever actually accidentally bought a firearm.

About 1967 I attended an estate auction near my home. Bad weather, very few bidders turned out. One item offered was a very nice hardwood carpenter's tool box (carry hand saws and common carpentry tools in a protective case). Auctioneer pushed for a $20 opening bid with no bidders, then a $10 start without action, I opened when it dropped to $5 opening bid and ended up owning it.

Inside were 3 excellent quality hand saws in fitted slots, hammers, screwdrivers, a brace drill with bits, steel square, speed square, mahogany-framed carpenter's level, a dozen other hand tools in drawers and recessed slots. Down in the bottom, wrapped in rags, was a FN Browning Model 1922 .32 pistol in very good condition.

Turned out the deceased had been a finish carpenter and cabinet maker after serving in Europe during WW2.

Over the years I have made good use of those fine old tools. The pistol drifted away years ago, now only a story to tell.

Yep. Back in June. I posted about it here: For me, an all-new level of senility!

The long and short of it is that I was very sick that day (and for weeks after) from a reaction to the second of two shingles shots (think of it as the worst flu ever) and between assorted drugs and long naps, I must have turned on my computer and apparently placed a bunch of lowball tracking bids on a bunch of guns... and then I went back to bed, later forgetting all about the brief bid-placing episode. A month later I got a call: Hey, where is the money for the gun you bought?

It was true. I had bought a gun. I had no clue what I had bought until I turned on the computer and went to GB. Sure enough, I had accidentally bought (won) a gun on GB with no memory of placing the bid whatsoever.

I have never accidentally purchased a handgun, but I have often bought one when I had no intention of doing so.

I also went to church one Sunday morning, and came back with two handguns that were given to me, including a 2.5" 19-4. One of our members was moving to Spain that very afternoon, and had made no provision to dispose of his handguns. He also gave me a big box full of reloading tools and components. I had $100 cash on me, but he wouldn't take it.

Kind of. But not exactly.

I was looking for a beater 4” model 10. Two ads locally, but one was vague and just said “SW Model 10, $325”. Messaged him but didn’t hear anything back. Messaged someone else, set to meet him the next morning.

Buy my 4” Model 10 and the other guy messaged me back, sending a picture of a 2” RB in the box. So the same day I ended up with a beater 4” and a nearly NIB 2”

I have won a bid that I thought sure I would be outbid. I was wrong. Seems the flurry of bidding ended with my bid which was only a few bucks above last bid. I was okay with the win but I was surprised.
I found it is best not to bid on an auction that ends very early morning hour unless you really want it. You have a good chance of being the only one up that early. LOL Including the seller.

Yup. I've gotten the surprise email from Gunbroker announcing that I'd won an auction.

First time was a lowball $146 bid on RIA Armscor M206 38 SPL. Luckily enough I was able to sell it for $200 months later on Armslist. The transfer bar snapped off while dry firing with snap caps and even though Armscor warranty service went well I could never trust it again.

Second time was for an LCP 10th anniversary I was having "fun" bidding up a new member and he got the last laugh when he stopped bidding and I won it. Bought it and sold it to a buddy because it was still a great price, $167 or somewhere thereabouts.

I've also been surprised by an auction for a magazine but for $12 that was a keeper.

It's become fairly common for me to get an email saying I've won a bid from Proxibid about a gun I lowballed weeks previous and forgot about.

Also, on two different occasions, I wanted one gun, so I bid low on two and won both.

Guess this would qualify. In the mid 60's I bought a '53 Hudson for the Twin H-Power engine to put in my race car. Prior to towing the residue to the junk yard I pulled the back seat out to check for change. There was some and a H&R 22 Special in distressed but shootable condition. My first handgun. Left it with my mom for protection when I left for the Navy in Nov. 66. I had forgotten about it until 2000 when my brother and I were going thru mom's things after she passed and found it in a cedar chest. Oh, gave $15 for the Hudson.

The new gunbroker format has caused me to hit “buy now” as I was simply scrolling down the page. So far I have always been able to cancel but it would only take minor confusion to inadvertently hit confirm instead of cancel. Buy now should not be that close to the scroll bar.

I accidentally won this IHMSA Super Blackhawk NIB for $530 off gun broker. It's very possible (but undocumented) that it came out of the Elgin Gates collection. The seller sold off dozens of nib silhouette guns, near Gates' home town, with other guns sold belonging to him.

I have to agree with stansdds: A few years ago I took my then high school aged son to a LGS to purchase a beautiful Model 19-3. While I was chatting with the owner, my son found an equally beautiful 4014. He called me over to see it.

Long story short, I bought the 4014......then the next week I went back hoping the 19-3 had been sold. As soon as I saw it there, I purchased it as well.

Best story, hands down!

Yes. I accidentally bought a gun on GunBroker. Had a couple bids going. One for a Smith 37-2 and another for a NIB Smith 042. The 042 is worth more, by a long shot. I tossed up a lowball initial bid on the 37-2. Maybe I'd get it. Maybe not. Either way, was not going to increase the bid. Then, I had sort of a bidding war going with somebody for the 042.

So, later that day was checking the auctions while multitasking....watching the news, talking to my wife, doing stuff with my daugher, etc. Wanted to place a high max bid on the 042 and set it, or so I thought, at something well north $650. I HAD THE WRONG AUCTION OPEN. So, I put a ridiculously high max bid on the 37-2. Didn't have to pay the full max bid price because nobody bid it up that high...but still overpaid. Also, got the 042

Accident; yeah that's it. Guy I know was selling a 642 to a mutual friend. When he told me how much I remarked "Wish you'd offered it to me first. Said friend backed out so I am a man of my word. Always need an extra 642 anyways. Joe

I was showing a friend how to bid on ebay. I put a bid on a M13 4" blue barrel. A week later, I found out that my bid had won. Oh well. I think I sold it a few years back.

No,but I accidentally got married
A girl I had been seeing for 3 weeks suddenly put the pressure on hard wanting to know where we were headed,so I figured I’d call her bluff (May have been alcohol involved) and she accepted Have you ever accidentally bought a handgun?
Still haven’t decided if that was a good move overall or not lol

How long ago did this happen? I proposed after dating a girl about 3 weeks and we've been married 45+ years. To be fair, we had gone to high school together but didn't meet until 2 years later. The proposal was a year after that.

I bought 2 Marlin 39 Mounties on the same day on GB. One, I was bidding on and the second was listed in the wrong spot with a low BIN price. I jumped on that one and fully expected to get out bid on the other. Pretty spirited bidding till I had placed my bid and still ~$50+ below what it was worth at the time. Thankfully I had funds enough for both. One is a 1959 39M and the other a 1960 39M. Now, a single similar example is selling for what I paid for both 11 years ago.

Squared it with my wife by telling her the nicest one was her's. She had always told me she wanted to be Annie Oakley when she was little and I told her Annie used a rifle just like this. A slight exaggeration, but she did use a Marlin .22 in some of her shows, but mostly Winchester, I know.

Got a real stink eye, but she did kinda buy it. Still have both her and the rifles, though she gave up on the Annie Oakley bit.

47 replies and no one has yet hit on the difference between "accidental" and "unexpected"?

Adult beverage consumption aside, if you place an auction bid and win, that's no accident. Not remembering said bid is another topic...
