Default .40 Hi Power question.

Today I went by the gun shop to pay my yearly dues to the range I belong to and while there I looked in the pistol case to see what was there. They had a scoped 629 Classic in it for $999 and some small bottom feeders, but I saw a Hi Power in .40 S&W sitting there on consignment for $650. It looks to be in good condition. I took a pic of it with my cell phone and uploaded it to Postimage to post it here.

My question is this; is that a good price for a .40 Hi Power? You should be able to click on the pic for a high resolution view of the gun.

In my area .40 S&W guns do not sell quickly. That is a decent price for a HP Practical, if it were a 9mm it would be a steal.

The .40 HP’s are a little chunkier than the 9mm versions.

Hi Powers seem to be the exception to the “.40s don’t sell” rule. I would snatch that one up, and look for a .357 Sig barrel.

I'd have bought it without hesitation at that price. They are not very common.

I can’t speak for the 40 but I have Browning Hi Power in 9 that is one of the best shooting guns that I have ever shot.

For that price you would have a awesome shooter.

The .40 Hi Power has the stronger cast Mk III frame and a heavier slide to deal with the additional recoil.

I am not a .40 Short and Whimpy fan but I'd make an exception for a $650 Practical model of the Hi Power.

Thanks for the input, guys. I thought it might be a decent price, but I am not really familiar with Hi Powers or pricing of them. I might run back over there tomorrow and see if it's still in the display case and see if we can make a deal, if for nothing else than to turn it over. I don't own anything in .40 S&W and wasn't thinking of expanding my collection that way, but if this is a good deal I might as well pick it up. I guess I will have to pick up a box of ammo to try it out if I do buy it too, and combine it as a buying/shooting trip.

I have two .40 Hi-Powers (used to have three), including a Practical. I'm pretty fond of them and would be tempted at that price. Having said that, I recently watched one on Gunbroker listed at a starting price of $899 and the auction ended without a bid. I also watched a recent sale of a .40 HP in the Silver Chrome finish with the ostentatious gold trigger and it went for only $699. I can say that the .40 Practical is a joy to shoot, especially, if like me, you favor steel autos.

I shot a 40 S&W high power years back and it sure did take some effort to rack the slide back to feed a cartridge into the chamber.Only was given a few rounds to shoot. Fairly accurate from my limited testing. They aren't making high powers except from manufacturers other than FN. Yours looks to be in nice shape. Down here in Louisiana I've only shot the one I mentioned. And haven't seen any at our local gun shows. So if you like it I'd say go for it. Meg Gar still makes magazines for the 9mm version so maybe they still make them for the 40 version. Frank

I bought mine for $350 in 1994, carried it through retirement, then some - it's as serviceable today as in 1994 after thousands of rounds for regular qualification and SRT training & qualification. You won't find a better, more durable SA 40 S&W semi-auto.

If you get it, remove the magazine safety - it improves the trigger and makes the weapon serviceable without a magazine inserted.

If you want them, I can send you the cheap black plastic grips that came with mine!

Bought mine a year ago for $550. Put on some cocobolo grips and two new mecgar mags. As noted effort is required to retract the slide but with the mag safety removed the mags drop free and the trigger is improved.

I have a Browning in 9mm and I love it. I also shoot .40 cal. and love it!
At that price and the looks of condition I would grab it!

If you don't have a Hi Power and want one, go get it (if it's still there), I have a couple of 9mm and they're only gonna go up in price. 40cal is the least desirable, but considering no more are coming it'll only go up too I'd imagine.
Warning: Be very cautious removing the mag dis-connect, it doesn't always just "fall out" like a lot of people would lead you to believe after removing the pin holding it in. If not, then the trigger pin has to come out to get it loose and (sometimes) it has to be "pressed" out and you can damage your frame banging on it if not experienced doing this simple job. Most of the time, they're easy, except for mine. ugh
That looks like a MkII, if it has a flat ridge on top and a weep hole at the end of the muzzle it is.

The low price on the HP makes up for the crazy high price on the Bodyguard.

I'll be the contrarian, and say no.

You can still get a S&W CHP 4006TSW for under $400, which is where I would put my money if I wanted another full size .40 cal.

Apparently my whole region is the exception to the rule, as .40s go for just as much as 9s here, sometimes even more.

At first I thought that local Law Enforcement must still be carrying .40s, but nope, local LE carries 9mm and State Police carries .45 ACP. I guess it's just really popular with civilians.

Unless something has changed of late, the .40 HP is harder to find than a 9mm and in my area they have gone up in price as have the 9mm HP. I would be all over that one at that price and I am not a .40 fan.

I would say that is an OK price. I might say a 9mm would be cheaper to shoot. I bought the one below for 94.00 brand new OTD in 1971. I don't think the 40 cartridge had been invented yet.

I'd have bought it when I saw it, at that price!

My understanding is that there is a "drop-in" 9mm barrel for them, and again my understanding, that some consider the 9mm barrelled .40 S&W Hi Power Practical as the ultimate 9mm.

But I am certainly no expert on them.

Well, you bunch of enablers are just awful. I decided to go to the range today after I went and gave a little urine for a random drug screen and dangit, when I got to the "T" in the road where one way goes to the range and the other goes to the gun shop my hands turned the doggone wheel towards the gun shop. Anyways, I went in the store and ended up coming back out with the Hi Power for $650 OTD and a box of ammo and went to the range.

I also brought my 25-2 and shot around 150 rounds through it, then tried out the Hi Power. It's also the first 40 S&W I have shot or owned, so I was kind of hoping I wouldn't like it too well. Well, after running the 50 rounds I bought for it through it, all I can say is dayum, what a nice gun! It's a real keeper and with this pistol at least, recoil isn't much snappier than +P 9MM I've shot in the past in my Beretta M9. So I guess now I will have to buy some more reloading dies and brass and bullets because I think this one is a keeper.

@ColbyBruce, I have a question about what you posted earlier. What is a "HP Practical" as compared to a standard Hi Power? Is that a different version of the HP or what? The reason I ask is that the gun only came with 1 mag and I just looked over on Grab-A-Gun and they show 2 different mags. One is a standard mag and the ohter is listed as a "40S&W Hi Power Practical Magazine w/Black Finish". And what is this one I bought? Like I said, I really know nothing about the Hi Power.

Great news!!!

You will also find that your BHP .40 fits very nicely into a 1911 holster.....

Does the mag that came with it have the spring ( mousetrap) on it? It really sends the mag out with authority!

In mine I can also use standard 9mm 13 round magazines and load 10 .40 's

You will also be amazed at the difference in your trigger if you choose to remove the magazine disconnect. There are many YouTube videos on how to do so. Night and day difference!

muddocktor the BHP practical is the two-tone gun you purchased. The BHP .40 I bought was all basic black. My son owns it now. That was the eighth BHP I owned; I still have #2.

As far as the mags are concerned the standard would be for the 9mm and the .40 S&W is so marked and holds ten cartridges. Here is a photo of the proper mags.

Yes, the mag that came with it does have the spring on it. And the mag safety was already pulled out of the pistol when I got it, Randy. It has a nice trigger on it too.

My ex purchased a .40 BHP for herself many years ago. It's one of the nicest shooting .40's in existence.

It's got an extra locking lug, a bit more slide mass, and is heavier sprung than the 9mm, though it's still a relatively svelte gun.

The stock grips were aweful...but Spegels sure are nice.

I did like shooting it on occasion.

Thank you man. I do like the 2 tone look myself; kind of makes it stand out I think. At Grab-A-Gun, both the mags I am talking about are marked for 40 cal, but the one labeled Practical in the description is about $4 cheaper. But they both are on the pricey side. I see that Midway has Mec-Gar mags for around $23, which just over 1/2 what the Browning mags cost.

Always wanted a 9mm high power. Checking around the local gun shows prices seemed to start at $800 and went up from there. Just couldn't seem to swing the money. Then CDI started selling the MKII & MKIII high powers. they had a bunch with pics, finish and barrel conditions. Got A copy of my buddies FFL,postal money order and off to the races. Shows up next week. And fell in love with it. Called MegCar got 4-13 round mags.and test fired all of them and no duds.Took it ti a local smith disassemble and clean and to remove the mag safety. the MKIII has better sights than the MKII. Nice and high and very visible. You can see where the original white paint was on the front and rear sights. So will clean off what remains of the white paint and go to auto zone and get the whitest white touch up paint. Frank

The Hi Power sickness begins. lol
I had always wanted a "T" series to add to my collection (you'll learn what the allure to that is), but I came across a MkIII first and promptly snatched it up and then low-and-behold a few weeks later a gorgeous 1969 T series just fell out of the sky at my LGS. Now I have two HPs.

You'll like that Hi-Power. I bought one awhile back and it is probably the most accurate Hi-Power I've owned. It loves my 180gr reloads and I haven't bothered to try any other weight. Mine is the plain all black model and came with two of the spring assist mags. I bought 3 Mec-Gar mags (without the spring assist) and they work great, they just don't fly out like the originals.
Obligatory picture below.

I noticed that myself. Locally, I've seen brand-new Bodyguards at $250 recently. The don't seem very consistent in their pricing, but that's a good thing if you're looking for a .40 HP!

I got around to breaking it down to clean it this evening and found a surprise inside. When I pulled the grips off, I found a sticker stating "Property of Bay County Sheriff's Dept and an inventory number. So it looks like this one has a SD provenance and from the shape it's in, it was hardly carried. I looked online and found 2 Bay Counties. One in Florida around Panama City and the other is in Michigan on the lake.

I think it's pretty neat myself.

It's a 40 S&W like the one you purchased.
