A pair of early Sigs P220s in 9mm
I bought this last winter.., 1976 West German Sig Sauer P220 in 9 mm para date code HG all matching S/Ns.
Then today I picked up its brother the same gun except it weas imported by Browning as a BDA. Also 9mm date code HH = 1977. Browning imported these from Sig Sauer from 1976-1980. These are the same pistols except for the branding from Browning. There is no actual model number or name stamped on the Browning. It was catalogued by Browning as a BDA but not marked, at least not up through 1977.
These were originally made in 9mm para, 30 Luger, 38 Super and 45 ACP. The 9mm variant is not common.
One difference between the 2 of these is a high polish finish on the Browning on the lower part of the slide just forward of the serrations. Other than that and the grip panels that seem identical.

The 9mm in a 220 is a rare bird.
Was the 30 Luger ever imported to the states?

Very nice pair
It was the Browning BDA that brought me over into the DA/SA world. I got my first one in 1977
Up to that point, it was all 1911s to me

Supposedly it was.. evidence can be found on the Sig Forum for a particular s/n from 1980. A BDA in 7.65 which would be 30 luger. Then there are a few Sig P220s imported to USA in 30 Luger. Again based on s/n data on Sig forum. I am pretty sure there were very few purchased. Its a rare and hard to find cartridge in the USA. I would love to have one just for collector interest though.

Not especially common would be a more accurate description. An early porpoise nose 220 in .38 Super is a medium rare bird.
At least one .30 Luger Browning High Power was purchased by a man here. It was purchased to take back to some place in India which forbid owning a 9 mm Luger chambered gun. It is possible that he might have smuggled a fitted 9 mm barrel stuffed in with his socks. I would not know about that. Perhaps a .30 caliber Sig 220 or Browning BDA passed through this country the same way.

No doubt the Legion is a finer firearm. But the 1st and 2nd year production guns are always appealling to me. 1976-1977.

My 9x19 P220 is marked HG. The P220 in 9mm is quite common in most of Europe but especially in Switzerland were it was adopted by the military as the Pistole 75.

Glad you mentioned that!
As a follow up to the SIG Neuhausen P210, in respect to it's adoption by the Swiss military, that was some big shoes to fill!

My mid 80s W. German Sig 220 in .45acp ....... changed my whole idea about carry guns.
Mine will shoot cloverleafs at 50ft...... and I completely moved away from 1911/cocked and locked style guns for edc.

Mike, you have a wide field of interest. My Sigs all stared as duty or shooters and with the exception of the 320 have been generally flawless. Being a later design than the S&W DA/SA they have a better trigger and decocker. It's hard to believe that mid 70s pistols are collectible as I clearly remember when they were new.
