Default Remington--Improved Model 6

I picked this one up a few weeks ago. I've looked at these in the past but they all had problems, usually with the falling block being all loose or missing parts. This one doesn't have those problems even though it is mostly a brown gun. The action is tight, the bore is shiny. I have a question though, should the fired cartridge extract or eject? I have to use my fingers to remove the case.

Sorry for the poor pics..

Had one for years, a fun gun for sure. Mine required fingertip ejection.

Here's some info direct from Remington:

Model 6 Rolling Block | Remington

They don't say anything about ejection, but I don't recall seeing any Remington type rolling block that had an ejector mechanism.
Anybody seen one?

By the way, have you tried the takedown screw?

Jim

While Numrich doesn't have the parts in inventory, they do refer to an extractor, extractor pin, and extractor spring.

Yes, I have. No problem with the takedown.

That's such a neat feature, especially as it has no effect on accuracy.
I'd like to think some lucky kids got to ride their bikes to a Scout meet with one of these taken apart in their backpack.

All the ones I've had only extracted, there is no spring to eject. Hopins & Allen had similar design and it only extracted too. Not uncommon to find them loose from take down being abused. Worn extractor can cause rim blow out and give you a face full of dirt. Wear glasses!

Nice little single shots.

It's considered an Extractor on both the #6 and the #6 Improved.

On the earlier #6, it will sometimes, if you snap the breech block open with enough force, flick the empty right out of the chamber for you.
The right ammo, using .22shorts, ect can help with that but it wasn't designed to necessarily work that way. Just momentum at work.

The #6 Improved uses a much thinned in width extractor than the #6. If anything about the later model that was not improved over the earlier it was the extractor.
The loaded round can sometimes slip over the #6 Improved extractor and get behind it when loading if the thin lip of it gets worn.
There's a very small coil spring under the back end of the extractor that is supposed to push and keep the extractor up and in place/allaigned with & against the chamber. If that spring gets crammed with dirt, rusted otherwise not working, the extractor won't position itself well and problems result.

A clean & lubed action and no worn parts and they work just fine.
The Improved#6 is all coil springs. The Hammer and breech block sharing one coil spring to power both. Very simple arrangement much like a couple of the small Stevens Boys rifles
The earlier #6 uses flat springs.

The frame on the #6 is a composition build of flat plates of steel and cut out inserts of steel all sandwiched together. Held in position with several rivets.
Polished flush after assembly the edges of the pieces and the ends of the rivets are hard to see on most of them.

Frame on the #6 Improved was a Steel Forging. No longer did they use the composition/riveted assembly method.

I'd use StdVel ammo only in these elderly rifles.

2152hq,

Thanks for the info and yes, standard velocity is the way to go on these old .22's. I think this rifle probably had a steady diet of 22 shorts, they extract fine but a lr results in a stuck case. I'm thinking that there is a ring buildup in the camber that needs to be thoroughly cleaned. I'll try to get that done this weekend and see if there is improvement. The extractor seems to be ok, the spring seems a little weak but not to bad.

That was my first rifle. I was eight years old when my dad brought it home from the hardware store. I killed a rabbit with it the first day that I had it. It was and still is very accurate. My daughter, grandson and great grandson all learned to shoot with it. I hope that when my great grandson has children they will learn to shoot with it. The only problem that it has is a buildup from too many shorts. A long rifle will not chamber completely.

The extractor still works good. You have a piece of history. i think that 1933 was the last year of manufacture. That waa the year that I got mine. A few cents less than $3.00.

I have an older Number 4 RB chambered in .22 Long Rifle and another number 4 in .32 rimfire that I am converting to .32 S&W Long. Both of them are solid frame rifles.

That's a project that I've wanted to pursue for some time now, either with a #4 RB or an H&A falling block. Who's doing the conversion for you?

John

I went the opposite way. I got a nice RB in 25rf oct barrel when I was a kid. Gun was nice shape except bore was terrible.Had a new 513T barrel fitted. I wanted a 22mg but my gunsmith talked me into 22Lr. It turned out to be a tack driver, my Turkey shoot rifle. It's got Lyman aperature front and tang rear.. At 100' it will shot 3/8" groups.

I'm doing it myself. So far, I have re-chambered the barrel and plugged the old firing pin hole in the block. Just need to make a new firing pin and drill the block for it.

The old single shot rifles in 25rf & 32rf were a dime a dozen around here just a few years ago. I wish I had held onto a few good ones. The only ones I had any interest in were CFs and only run across a few 25/20 Win single shot cartridge locally. In H&A and Stevens in 32rf the bulk are RBs.
It gives you a idea of what the General Store was selling back in the day.
My local area was kind of remote until after WW1 and most people dealt locally. When my kids were in school they let it be known their dad would buy broken guns for parts. I bought many single shot rifles and shotguns during 70-80s. The internet put me out of business on those dealings.

Here is my #6, it has the laminated receiver and you can see the rivets in the picture. It also has a sheet metal flip up peep. A quality rifle compared to the 027 Hamilton it's pictured with. The Hamilton has a sheet metal receiver and a sheet metal wrapped brass barrel. I don't know what they sold for originally, but it couldn't be much over a couple dollars.

Well Muley, I hope you post a thread about it when you are done. And a range report too!
