As I understand it, before buying one of these rare, aluminum receiver Hi-Powers, carefully inspect the receiver for excessive wear, cracks, and peening.

I have had two 1970s HPs, one blued and one Renaissance. I sold them later to buy something else. When I heard they were to be discontinued, I purchased a 1995 Silver Chrome 40S&W model and switched out the trigger, hammer and controls to all Silver Chrome and then fitted it with a KKM Precision 357Sig barrel. The photos show the origingl and the modifications. This one is like new and a keeper.

Yesterday, I cam very close to buying an HP identical to the one in RedCardinals third from the left picture in 9mm. I just do not know enough about them yet to pull the trigger. Do I want a newer shooter or one with Wehrmacht markings?

Not sure anybody else can answer the question of what you want. It all depends on what you want it for - to shoot a lot, or to keep in the safe as a collectible. For most of us price factors into the decision too - for some of us it figures into the decision in a big way.

P4250105.jpgThis is a Browning HP that Armand Swenson worked over. It is just enough customizing to make it perfect. Extended the safety, removed the hammer bite and removed the magazine safety.
Many years ago a friend of my Dad's had me try out every 9mm he had. We met at the range and he pulled out a case that held a Model 39 and 59 Smith, a Beretta 92s, Colt 1911A1, Walther P38 and a Browning HP. The HP was the last pistol I tried. It was love at first sight. The trigger was crisp and the grip fit like it was part of my hand. I ordered a Browning HP for myself the week after the range session.
This pistol was given to me by the same gentleman that had me try out all those 9mm's.

The customized HPs from the late 70s and 80s may be the best ever conceived and built....... my grail gun at the time.... but $$$$s and fear of buying unseen

Just picked up my first Browning Hi Power today. 76C. Grips seem to be darker color than others pictured in this thread. Is there a way to tell if they are original to the gun? No box, but came with the Browning zippered leather case with red lining. Thanks for looking!

Those grips are very nice but are no original. (They are too nice and slender to be original)

That's a nice Hi-Power and the stocks look really good, but they are not original Hi-Power stocks.

About the time Browing/FN decided to stop manufacture of the Hi-Power I picked but this NIB model from FM (Argentina).
And this brand new adjustable sight model from Browning.
I’d never owned an HP before but glad I finally do.

The stocks look like Hogue, which are available in a variety of hardwood.

This one is a 1975 Belgian gun that has been fairly extensively reworked. Most obvious is the grey Cerakote finish and the extended C&S safety. Also, the magazine safety has been removed and it has had a trigger job and new fixed sights. Front sight is a night sight and grips have been changed out. All in all, it makes for a very functional carry piece.

My 1972 Belgium, with Spegel handles, Novak sights, C&S hammer and sear. It has had the mag disconnect removed and one half of the stock ambi thumb safety installed ...

My only post war HP - made in Belgium and assembled in Portugal. With a bobbed hammer, removed mag safety, Wolf springs, and Speigel Delrin grips.

Mine has a very interesting story to go with it. I was recently working a full time security job with a high end resort in Colorado. I was working with a friend who told me that he was best friends with Stephon Camp.They were roommates in college and went on the Denton Tx. Police Dept. together. Because of Stephen's knowledge of the HP, my friend had one done up just like Camp's #1 that is on the web page of Hi powers and handguns except that Stephen Camp's has a slightly extended Barsto Barrel in his and my friend Russ's had a standard barrel. Russ told me that he was going to sell his because Stephen Camp's wife gave him Stephen's #1 after he died. Russ said that he did not need to have two alike. I purchased Russ's 1971 Hi Power that had been customized by by Lou Williamson as was Stephan's.
Both and been hard chromed with S&W sights milled into the slide top as was common at that time. Both had a red ramp insert istalled as well. The trigger is excellent. I am so fortunate to have had the oportunity to acquire a beautiful HP with this sort of provenance so to speak.The price was to say the least beyond excellent because Russ wanted me to have it. I treasure this beautiful HP. I sent it off to 'Don Williams and had an ambi safety installed since I am a lefty.

Here is mine. It’s a beater, but I love it. I re-sprung it awhile back, and added these apparently home-made rosewood panels.
I’m about to start spending some dough on it, tho. Sending off for better sights, throat job for hollowpoints, and maybe a safety enhancement. And a rust blue job when done.

22LR HI POWER.....
This is my latest project. A 22lr HI POWER, consisiting of a CIENER conversion kit on an FN aluminum frame, with Crimson Trace grips.
I added threads to the barrel.
I made a hammer spring swap/modification, did a little polishing, to get the gun to run reliably with Remington Subsonic ammo.
Add an SWR .22 can & the fun starts.
Trigger needs a little work, but, it is a ton of fun to shoot now.

Do you happen to have a picture of the inside of yours? Mine both have "95" written in marker. Is that the year they were made? I wonder why Hogue wouldn't mark the grips they make? Mine don't say Hogue anywhere.

Comparing your picture to the pic of mine, yours seem to have checkering covering the entire bottom half but mine have a strip of smooth along the back.

Someone mentioned the BDM model (pictured) in the same breath as if it were a version of the HP. Nothing could be farther from the truth. They're both semi-auto pistols and that's where the similarities end. The differences are numerous. I own both and enjoy both, but they are very different animals.

I'll take em off this eve and let you know, Hoque's are massed produced, I thought, so it doesn't surprise me they don't mark them.

Owning various Hi Powers, an HP-DA, a BDM and an SFS Hi Power, I still prefer the original Hi Power for general shooting purposes.
