I bought this in 2002 after seeing them showing up at gun shows. It was an impulse buy due to the size and caliber. This one is in .45/70 with a 10 inch barrel. Haven't shot it a lot but everyone who has fired it gets a big happy face after about a 2-3 second delay. At the time I had a place to shoot it outside but that is in the past now. I'm not sure if the indoor range I go to would allow it, so I think I'll find out.

We have had several BFR in .460 at my shooting range as rental guns, we have also sold a good deal of them also in .460.

An issue that we have had with the BFR’s, both the ones that we have sold and have had on the range, is that the ejector rod housing screws, base pin screw and grip frame screws will come loose when shooting. This have happened with guns that is new straight out of the box and not been done anything with and after only 150 - 200 rounds. Of course, a good routine is to periodically go over your firearm. But if we compare the BFR to our S&W .460’s that we use, we can shoot far more with the S&W before we have to tighten the screws.

I think that one of the problems is that some of the screws that they use is to short and that there is not any Loctite on them. I have attached a picture of the grip frame screw that is in front of the trigger guard from inside of the frame, this is the screw that comes loose first and we have lost a few of them when we didn’t catch it in time that it was loose. You can see that the screw is very short and should be much longer.

We had a few complaints about this from customers. We solved this by taking the same type of screws they use on the bottom of the frame (part nr 37) that is much longer and file it down so it’s flush. I would also recommend changing out the grip frame screw front (part nr 38) with the same type of screws and use Loctite on every screw. There is a reason why the yoke screw assembly in S&W revolvers are pre-applied with Loctite

Other than that, the gun is fine.

I don't know how much you guys use your BFR, but we used them a lot, and I really mean a lot. So it might be that we will experience problems the ordinary shooter that only use them once in a while probably never will have.

As an aside, the old time gunfighters sometimes used bees wax to coat the thread screws, not sure where I read that...and certainly less effective than non-perm Loctite. But easier to disassemble.

The thought of having a deer hunting revolver of the same caliber as my deer hunting rifle...3030, intrigues me. Right now when I revolver deer hunt its with my Ruger 44 mag. I can see a new revolver purchase in my future. Thanks for the thread oysterer, until now I didn't know these existed.

Why not go all the way? Get a 45-70 BFR and a matching rifle, A nice 1886 or Shiloh Sharpe's come to mind. Factory loads won't kick any more than your 30-30 now!

Sacrilege!!! The 3030 and Northern New England go together like maple syrup and red flannel. Sometimes tradition just has to take precedent over common sense!
