One of the local shops had this 9422 Legacy in near mint condition with the box. It apparently came in from an older gentleman's collection.

I figured it would go nicely with my 1978 9422 XTR and my 2000 9422 Trapper - and it was a 9422 variant I didn't have yet. The Legacy is still a carbine pattern but the 22 1/2" barrel extending past the magazine tube and the pistol grip stock and curved lever pay homage to the Model 64 rifle.

I'm normally not a fan of a scope on a 9422, but it goes quite well with the lines on the Legacy and it feels good in the hand with a scope on board when the straight stocked 9422 does not. That's probably due to the pistol grip and curved lever and the slightly different hand position.

The 9422 Legacy was a sharp looking rifle!

I've got a 9422 XTR that I'll never part with. IMHO the finest .22 lever gun ever made.

Beautiful rifle, I would love one like that. I had a 94/22 WMR years ago - but I traded it on a 25-5.

There are not many rifles where I want .22 WMR, as .22LR is more accurate in most .22 LR sized rifles, and .22 Hornet is more capable in most small centerfire rifles. However, the 9422 is one of the rifles where .22 WMR makes a great deal of sense, and my fourth 9422 will be a 9422M.

I finally got it out to the range this afternoon, and it's a shooter, even by 9422 standards. My 1978 vintage 9422 XTR and my 2000 vintage 9422 Trapper will both shoot decent 50 yard groups of about an inch and will both manage 3" groups at 100 yards with tang sights (and not really any better with a scope).





However, this 9422 Legacy with a 2-7x33 Leupold shot very well with CCI SV, and then shot even better with SK Std Plus with large ragged one hole 5 shot groups at 50 yards:



I wasn't able to set up a 100 yard target due to a sea of mud from the grass just past 50 yards out to my 200 yard plates, however I did bring the elevation up 20 MOA for the 200 yard plates and found it would easily hold a 6" plate. It was dead calm today and the resulting groups with CCI SV were about 2" wide and 4" high with some vertical stringing, due to the velocity variation in the CCI SV. (I chrono'd it and it averaged 1053 fps in the 22.5" barrel, and varied from a low of 1029 to a high of 1070.)

Very nice score. Rifle looks to be in great shape too. Wish I would have invested in one years back in 22 magnum. The Marlin 1894 in 22 magnum is also a great one to have.

Always wondered who was the design enginer idiot was that thought putting a carbine magazine tube on a gun with a rifle-length barrel was a good idea and looked right.
Surely Winchester or the Japanese company that may have made the gun could have sprung for the extra 75 cents that a longer tube might have cost.
I had one of those guns a long time ago. It was a nice gun, but the short tube, and the incompetence behind it bugged me so much that I sold it when I had a chance.

Miroku never made the 9422, and to date I have not heard of any plans for Winchester to revive the 9422 and have Miroku start making them.

The short magazine tube was intentional. The 9422 "Legacy" with it's curved pistol grip was intended to pay homage to the Winchester Model 55 and Model 64, which is why it was called the "Legacy". The longer 22.5" barrel overhanging the standard length 20" magazine tube adds to the Model 55/64 flavor. Going all the way down to a 3/4 length magazine tube like the Models 55 and 64 was not an option since the Legacy 9422 was still a carbine pattern lever gun and a 3/4 length magazine tube would have required it be a full rifle or short rifle pattern lever gun with a fore end cap and a magazine tube hanger.

It's obviously subjective, but I like the look of the 9422 Legacy and it's the only 9422 model that I've ever thought looked good with a scope as the curved pistol grip and lever add some depth and balance to offset the scope on the receiver. The straight gripped Model 94 style stock just never looked right with a scope:



If I have a complaint with the 9422 Legacy, it's the use of the large cut out in the magazine tube to accommodate .22 WMR. By the time the Legacy was produced, Winchester had standardized on both a common receiver and a common magazine tube between the 9422 and the 9422M. Most folks don't notice the longer ejection port of the 9422M receiver on a 9422 until you point it out to them, but the longer 9422M loading port on a 9422 is a glaring reminder every time you load it that Winchester saved a few bucks by going with a common part for the two.

My 2000 9422 Trapper has the 9422M receiver, but still has a 9422 .22LR ported magazine tube.
