Default Anyone prefer Pachmayrs?

Finding grips that I like for my GP100s is tough. The Hogue rubbers feel nice to shoot with, but the grip sticks to clothing like glue. Every wood grip I’ve had shifted a a little when wiggled.

I found a pair of discontinued (for the GP100s) Pachmayr grippers, New Old Stock.

They feel great in hand, are secure, and don’t grab on clothing.

The only drawback? The seam under the trigger guard has a gap. I think I’ll just ignore it and keep the grips as is.

Anyone like the old school Pachmayrs?

Decelerator/Gripper is one of my favorites by Pachmayr. The other is the Compac Pro - perfect for a 357 snub.

I prefer the Pachmayrs.......they just seem to fit my hands better than the Hogues.

I use the Pachs on any of the revolvers I carry for hunting, hiking or practice at the range. It's no problem take the wood stocks off and replace them with the Pachs when I need to.

Wood for show and Pachs for go....so to speak.

Those things are like Red's Hot Sauce....I put them on everything. They look better on stainless than blued guns. I don't tend to sit around admiring my guns so they just stay on.

I only use the Presentation grips. I don't like finger grooves. I even have them on my 1911's and a military grip High Standard.

They are my favorite grip. They make me shoot a gun like a laser beam.

I've had Pachmayrs and they actually work pretty well and have a good feel, but I've never been able to get past the looks; just awful and ruin the appearance of any revolver. I know, tastes vary...

I always use them on Rugers or else their trigger pinches the skin on my trigger finger.

Since I have big hands I find both Hogues and Pachmayrs improve my grip a lot. Some of the new Smiths come with crazy, small, hard plastic grips. don't work well for me. With larger handguns it is not as much of an issue.

While some folks think they defeat their purpose, I like them on J-frames.

I have them on a Ruger Redhawk. No way would I try to shoot a 44 Magnum without them.

Most of my revolvers get Pachs routinely.
Got a couple fancy .41s and one M15 snub that
don't, yet.

Pachs on my Ruger SRH Alaskan and my 1911(s) but I also have other grips for the 1911's cause...1911 :] even though the Pachmayr's feel best. For any serious business the Pachs would be my only choice.

Prefer Pachmayrs? No

I prefer the look and feel of proper Wood or Ivory grips on most handguns

Use them for specific applications? Absolutly

I do like the Pachmayr Compac for some of the undercover firearms like the Smith & Wesson Night Guards

While I would prefer the Factory Combats on these from a shooting perspective. The smaller profile of the Compacs helps concealment while still providing an adequate grip and the all black look draws less attention

When recoil reduction is paramount, I prefer the Hogue Tamer grip that was designed for the Smith & Wesson 500s. These will fir K, L and N frame Smith & Wessons

Like most finger groove grips, the finger spacing does not fit my hand with its fat fingers. So I remove the bottom finger ridge which makes them far more comfortable for me.

Looks are in the eye of the beholder, But I like them on functional working guns. This old photo from the 1980's shows three favorites wearing their rubbers.

American1776 - I might try a small wood / c-clamp to close that gap, then try a little heat with a hair dryer, see if it takes a better fit behind the trigger guard. I would imagine that would be annoying under recoil.

Thumbs up

I installed Pachmayr Presentation grips on my service revolver (M28-2) when they were first authorized by my department. They’re not pretty but they sure make reloading easier.

I have like a half-dozen Pach Presentation grips on various revolvers, and a like number of Hogues. I can't say I prefer one vs. the other. I bought an early Charter .44 Bulldog, found out quickly it was very difficult to control with the tiny factory grips. I put a pair of Pach Presentations on it and it became shootable.

OP stated for the GP 100.

I suggest Ruger's original
rubber grips with wood inserts as now
offered as aftermarket by Altamont.

Ruger uses Altamont extensively on
many of its GP-100 models and SP 101
models.

Numerous patterns including the
original smooth and rounded design
in rubber. And no finger grooves
anywhere!

I have always preferred Pachmayr Presenation grips, as well as the Gripper. However, I find that in the last decade or so they just are not made to same quality as they used to be. About ten years ago, I bought some Grippers and they had so much excess rubber I had to use an hobby knife on them to make them fit well. Plus the rubber is soft and splits in some points.

On the other hand, Hogue Monogrips still seem to made of excellent quality, but do not seem to fit well along the backstrap. They feel great, but stick out over the backstrap of my Model 19. On the Gonalco Alves model, I was able to fit them using a file. But the rubber models stick out too far, and I cannot even get the nylon ones to go on the gun at all.

My wish is for Pachmayr/Lyman to improve the quality of the Presentation grips, and make them available for more guns (round butts, Rugers, etc.).

I used then on my PPC revolvers, my carry guns and my 2 29s I used to go deer hunting with. To me very comfortable and took away some of the sting with loud booming loads!

Still on my model 15 2'' and model 29 4'', the other's in a box of gun parts.

I prefer them for rubber .
Look closely at the places inside the grips that are keeping them from closing , try gently scraping away any rubber material that's in the way .
May be a little rubber flashing from the mould that needs removal .
I have used various shaped Exacto Knife blades to scrape / remove unwanted rubber ... go slow , and remove only whats necessary

I have them on my Colt Agent carry gun. The gun is already homely so the ugly grips don’t hurt anything.

Always found Pachmayrs a Q& E solution and the most comfortable of the OTC grips.

I guess beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder because I think those two handguns look just fine, a little honest holster wear just adds character.

This picture illustrates the difference between a comfortable grip and an uncomfortable one. I don't know who makes the new synthetic grips for S&W, but they look cheap and feel awkward in the hand. Hogue, Pachmayr, and even the old Uncle Mike's grips are all much more comfortable.

I always wondered how S&W choose rubber grips. For a long time, it seemed that most L and N frame revolvers shipped with Hogue Monogrips. J and K frames shipped with Uncle Mike's. The one exception was the 625 Model of 1989, which always seemed to have Pachmayr Grippers.

It's funny, tastes change. I think Pachmayrs feel great, no question. I personally preferred the Grippers, but the regular presentations felt good too. In fact, back when I started the pistol game back in the late 80s/early 90s, EVERY Smith routinely got the factory grips pulled, and a set of Packies. Strangely, I never warmed up to Hogues.

As I get older however, it just seems that a fine sixgun should wear wood, so I've actually replaced the rubber with wood, either factory or aftermarket, Again, nothing against the comfort and functionality of the rubber. Just an aging shooters wants and desires.

And just to be completely truthful, every November the Grippers go back on the pre 29 for deer season, then come back off when the season ends.

Pay no mind, just rambling...

Put Pachmayer Grippers on my Ruger Redhawk .44 Magnum. My pistolsmith friend Bob also put them on his. To me, they offer the best trigger reach and overall control and fitment.

I find Pachmayr Small Presentation grips to be the ONLY suitable grips for N-frame square-butt revolvers. I find same to be nearly the best for K square target use, although Herrett custom-made grips are better, and for EDC, Rogers' grips are perhaps the best, at least for me.

For RB K & N frames, Compac or Compac Pro (no backstrap) are some of the best grips around.

For J frames, both Compac and Pres grips are very good for shooting, but a little bulky and possibly a little sticky for EDC.

For my hand, most Hogues are at least as good as Pachmayrs, but they don't cover quite as many frame sizes well.

I don't like Pachmayrs other than Pres or Compac. Most or all of their other grips are for hands larger than mine.

For a working gun, or one I shoot a lot, absolutely. If it's just a looking pretty gun that spends most of its time in the safe and not at the range, not so much. When I wore a gun for a living, they all got Pacs immediately, they fit me best and gave me a firm gripping surface.

While I prefer the look of "wood" on my revolvers, the Pachmayr grips excel in the areas of recoil absorption/comfort and wear. It didn't take long for the factory wooden grips of my service revolver to take a beating from striking car doors and other inanimate objects. I then transitioned to the "Presentation" grips from Pachmayr. While not as pleasing to the eye as the factory grips, they were more utilitarian.

I have the "Compac Professional" grips on my 3" Model 13 and the "Decelerator" grips on my Model 58. The only detriment to the Compac Professional grips is the fact that they are by nature more "tacky" than wood. As such when worn beneath clothing they sometimes limit the free movement of the fabric and "print" the firearm. The Decelerators on the Model 58 are excellent at point-ability and recoil absorption, especially for anyone with a touch of arthritis.

Last point, if you do use the Pachmayrs, or for that matter any other rubber grips, occasionally remove them and check the firearm for any signs of rust or corrosion. I've seen the revolvers of fellow officers who did not do so and had the finish damaged.

HTH.

Hard to beat Spegel Boot and Extended Boot grips for looks and handling........ open carry can be hard on grips that are almost impossible to replace...........

Pach's Compacts on my 4" round butt 686 (customized no dash)if open carried as a "utility, or at the range are my favorites for shooting .357s

I have a set on a 681 that I have.

It is apparently an Ohio Highway Patrol revolver as it has their crest engraved on it.

I like they way they feel. Not sure if that is how it was issued, but it feels and shoots great.

With the onset of arthritis in both hands, Diamond Pros have been a big help. Not old, but good anyway.

Had them on my first Department Six gun until we went to automatics and now have a set on the wife's M27 nightstand gun.

Not pretty but fictional.

My duty guns wore either Pachs or Hogues during my cop days. I bought a pair for my 1911 in 1976 and finally wore them out in the late '90s. The steel inserts were showing through the rubber. I was working part-time in a gun shop and the manager gave me a new pair 'cause my old pair looked so bad! They had a good grip though.

I don't care for their looks compared to nice wood grips. However, when I used to shoot long range pistol matches with .44 mag Mod 29, the factory target grips shifted under the heavy recoil and gave me 3" long blood blisters on the palm of my strong hand. Wrap around Pachs solved that problem and also eased the blow to my wrist bones.

I find the Grippers incredibly uncomfortable but love the Presentations.

Have been using Pachmayr Presentation grips since 1980. Prefer them for anything other than display of a revolver. For that I buy nice S&W target stocks. Will say, for my 18-3, I have a pair of beautiful target grips that are always installed. Just like the way they feel for shooting, way they look when not shooting. But, if and when I can find a nice set of Pachmayr Presentation grips, I will put them on the 18-3. To many ways to mess up a pretty pair of grips when at the range or out in the woods/fields. Sincerely. bruce.

Default I use the "original" Pachmayrs!

I don't have any real, branded Pachmayrs. Just one "old" (circa early 50's) pair of Mershon Imperial (predecessor to Pachmayr). I run these exclusively on the Model 65-3 when going out (range or hiking) with a full load of Magnums. Don't need em with 38, but sure are comfortable with the Maggies at the end of the day.

Mine do not show any gap anywhere, but it looks to me like it may be too much (or too little) tension on the grip screw. Mine come together just right with a very "touchy" tightening of the screw, so maybe the OP's gap is just one of those "leverage point" adjustments with that Pachmayr grip screw, IF it is like the old Mershons'

Either way I subscribe to the quote above in post #3, "Wood for show, Packs for go..."

Been a Pachmayr fan quite a while. They made my M29 44mag and Redhawk 41mag much easier shooting. Same for Compacs on my M49. They're not pretty, but they work.

They feel great in hand, are secure, and don’t grab on clothing.

The only drawback? The seam under the trigger guard has a gap. I think I’ll just ignore it and keep the grips as is.

Anyone like the old school Pachmayrs?

I used to really like that grip on round butt N frames like the 625. Very comfortable for me.

The quality of those things wasn't always what it should have been. At least that was my experience.

Pachmayrs bring back many memories for me.....
Just after finishing college, and prior to starting my LE career, I worked at a very well known area LGS.
Bullseye was still popular, and there was budding interest in what was to become IPSC.
There really weren't many aftermarket grip options out there.
We sold a lot of 'Jay Scott' grips that were mainly just flashy/showy and had no practical applications.
We sold many Herrett's 'Shooting Star' grips that were pretty and functional, depending on taste. Put those on my first centerfire revolver, a Ruger Security Six .357.

Pachmayrs were the mark of a 'real shooter', as Bullseye folks not only put them on revolvers and M1911's, but also would dust their hands with rosin for an even firmer grip. That rosin would stay in the Pach's checkered portion for years.

When I started on the PD in 1980, the issued revolver was a mix of Colt Trooper and Trooper MKIII's.
I immediately put a set of Pachs on it.
A year later, issued revolvers switched to M66's and I put a set of Pach Presentations on it. Back then they were plain black, with no Pach 'escutcheon'.
There really were only a few interested shooters on the department, usually identified by their revolver wearing Pachs.

Over time, on patrol the bottom of the right panel would be abraded by the car seat (if you were RH-ed) and get a little lopsided, but didn't really matter.

At some point, late 80's, I switched to the Pachs that were slimmer and had finger-grooves. By then, Pach had started putting their escutcheon on them.
The switch to M1076 autos came in 1989/90. That grip could get a little slick in the heat/humidity, so for some the Hogue grip sleeve became popular.

The last time I bought a new pair of Pachs was a few years back when many here on SWF and I were taking advantage of a pretty good deal on some S&W M640 .357's that were being sold by Centerfire Systems (?).
Think I ordered from Brownell's.
First set just wouldn't fit. And I noticed the composition was not the same as the 1970's-1980's Pachs. Less pliable.
Got them replaced, and the next set only fit after setting in boiling water for a bit and being screwed down really tight.
I think the newer Pachs are made in Mexico.

They worked OK, but eventually replaced with a set of NOS S&W J-rd. Targets.

I do not like rubber grips but prefer good fitting wood grips, Nills in the case of my GP100. They distribute the recoil over a large area.

Don't like them on revolvers. Too much fill in the backstrap for me. Makes them too bulky.

I think however they are an essential on a 1911 including their now-discontinued rubberized mainspring housing.

Yes! I've tried about every different kind of grip. The Pachmayr Grippers like you have are my favorite on an L or K frame revolver! I also love the Pachmayr J frame grips. I'm holding on to a set of Pachmayr J frame grips in hopes of getting another J frame some day.

Someone else mentioned it.... back in the 70's and 80's the first thing we did with a Smith was buy a set of Pachs. Now if we find a gun that has them we can't WAIT to get a factory set of stocks. Post a pic on here of a revolver you found at a gunshow with rubbers on it and you'll have a dozen posts telling you to get those things off!!!

I also can see the quality in the Pachs has deteriorated. They don't seem to fit very well anymore and those gaps and overlaps are pretty uncomfortable.

The only guns I have today with rubber grips are my Redhawks. They wear Uncle Mike's.

Dan
