M17 P320 Surplus

Curious what forum members think about this latest Sig effort. I figured there must have been a discussion about it here, but was unable to locate anything in my searches.

I have been following these on GB and the prices just seemed unreasonable for what you were getting - $1.1-1.4K for average serial numbers - but I am not a military surplus collector, so perhaps there is some value there that I'm failing to appreciate. Today I was over at a gun shop that I don't visit often, to get on their list for a 4.25" Python, and spotted one of the Surplus M17's for $695 so I grabbed it, figuring worst case I could trade up for something nicer. It looks like a decent 9mm, and the two extra 21-capacity cartridges were nice to get, but even at $695 it seems a little high. Thoughts?

Sellers are getting well over MSRP for these. My guess is you did very well at that price and they will go up in value (limited numbers, proven military history).

If these are the new US pistol, how are surplus ones already being sold?

Have our forces already got their quotas?

Are these guns that failed govt. trials?

They were "test and evaluation" units with minor differences from the standard production guns, so the military traded them in for new ones. Apparently 3-5000 in total.

The most common explanation I've read is that the 101st Airborne evaluated them and decided they wanted black controls instead of the tan they came with. Sig decided it was too expensive to modify the existing guns, so they took them back and sent the military new M17's with black controls. I don't know if other changes were made.

Just as a curiosity I think you did well at that price point. If you are a military collector, keep it. If not flip it and list it for $1000 on gunbroker, sit back and watch what happens!

A friend of mine got one thru a Sig dealer. A bit under $800 out the door.
It cleaned up nicely. Some I have seen are a bir rough, but quite functional. One must be careful now for commercial production ones are being represented loosely as the USGI surplus ones.
I took my name off of the waiting list I was on. I decided I would rather have a 1911..... Real ones have some paperwork with them from Sig. For that money ($800.) I think it is a good deal for a piece with a documented USGI service history.

Thanks for all the responses. No, not a military collector. I just wanted to pick up a semi-auto with high-capacity magazines, before my legislators close off that option. Yesterday they were having hearings for a bill which would ban 10+ capacity magazines. The M17 'fit the bill', so to speak. I only have .357 revolvers and a .22 revolver, so this is my first semi-auto and I'm excited to see how it does at the range.

I’m sure they are fine guns and work well. However, I handled one and the grip felt very square and wide.

Cool guns. Some of the Army dudes I spoke with in Afghan were some of the first units rocking the M17. This was back in late 2018.

They expressed a fondness for the new M17, and said they were glad to get rid of the boat anchor M9s.

I’m going to hold out for the civilian M18 model, as that’s what my branch (Air Force) is going to be issued. I see they’re out now, might have to snag one.

I bought mine in mid-December and I love it. It's one of my favorite handguns to shoot. When they finally start issuing them out to MP investigators then I'll get to have a civilian one and a GI one.

I'm sure you'll be satisfied! I had a Sig XCompact and it was a great pistol. I too have been crossing off my "high" capacity needs as of late just in case.
