My wife has one. Knife aficionados will throw their hand up in horror at the the thought of using it on a high dollar blade but it works well on my ordinary old kitchen knives. Once you have an edge established it only take a couple passes to bring to a keen edge.

I have one that was left behind by one of my ex wives. I don’t use it on any of my good knives.

They're better for keeping a knife sharp than for sharpening a dull one. Adequate for maintaining kitchen knives, not a whole lot of good for much else.

At around $50, it's certainly a different breed, but I got a Chef's Choice Hybrid 250 a few years back and by a wide margin it is the best sharpener I have owned.
My one and only complaint is the blade on some of my pocket knives is too fat to fit in the final honing slot.

I remember my mother having a similar one back in the 50's. Seemed to work okay.

A steel rod gives better results. For sharpening a dull edge, or for reprofiling a blade something more is required. My favorite compact sharpener is the Work Sharp guided field sharpener. About $25 on Amazon.

Just about all pull through sharpeners use the same or very similar concept.
I use one with ceramic wheels instead of the steel. Very happy with results.
My WorkSharp sharpener gets most sharpening jobs now....WOW!! Gets "MY" knives scary sharp.

Keeps a Rada extremely sharp. Use it regularly, but only on the Radas.
