So after picking-up a nice 1971 Win. 94 about 2 weeks ago (I posted pics here), I decided it might be too nice to use as a Truck gun. I figured I'd keep my eye out for a used Marlin 30-30 in the $250-$300 range.

Well today while at a local pawn, I found this Win 94 US Border Patrol model for $430. No box or Paperwork. Wood looks excellent, but it has some finish issues. So I wouldn't feel bad if it gets bang around a bit as a truck gun. I guess the manager had just put it out today. Just good timing.

I was never Border Patrol, but do live about 50 miles north of the Border. This light, short, and powerful rifle should serve me well.

Kind of kool! When were they produced? Never saw one before.

Based on my research, they made a 1,000 in 1981 & are listed in the C&R book. The wood looks high quality on these. New in the box w/paperwork, they seem to sell for around $1300-$1500. So I figured a pre-lock Winchester for $430 was a good buy.

Great looking Model 94. After seeing your pictures, I can remember seeing a couple ion LGS when they came out.

Not too long ago, the 94 was informally considered "America's rifle." This title has now been passed down to the AR series of rifles, or so it seems. I would see many of these 94s (and Marlins), in both new and used configurations in LGSs; now, only rarely.

The OP's rifle is fascinating for its markings and condition, and also for the fact that an agency found it to be useful as late as 1981. Before longarms became standard issue in police vehicles, many LEOs in smaller departments would take along a personal longarm such as a 94 or M-1 carbine when they felt it necessary. Used 94s could be purchased for less than $100, heck, even new ones many times. Thanks for showing us this gem!

Was this a USBP issued rifle, or a commemorative available for sale to agents? Or sold to the public?

I believe this was a 1981 commemorative rifle, not a duty one.

It looks short compared to the standard 94 Carbine and I like the 'long wood' forend.

They made 2 versions of that

1000 for sale to general public. Those are ser# prefix 'BP'

800 for sale to Active and I believe also retired Border Patrol members,,these are ser# prefix with 'USBP'.


1981 was right about when US Repeating Arms Co was taking ownership of Winchester Repeating Arms co.

I note the W/P proof mark on the bbl, but no proof on the top of the frame as was usually done by Winchester through the years.
Means nothing, just an observation.

Yes, 16 inch. I didn't even notice the long wood forend. I had to go back and look at my pics.

According to the link above, the original asking price for these were $1195. That's $3378 in todays dollars. That's seems pretty high.

I also had no idea they were making Commemoratives until 2005.

That long forend tip extending so far beyond the barrel band sure stands out. I don't like it.

I thought it made the barrel look shorter, too, but it seems that the barrel really is shorter!

Very nice and handy looking rifle. The USBP never issued the model 94 Winchester in .30-30, at least in modern times. About that time (1981) the USBP issued rifle was probably the Remington 7600. It replaced a real dog of a bolt action rifle from Savage. BTW, there are some other firearms and knives, etc. that are "commemoratives" that never have been issued. A pretty rare USBP commemorative is the Remington 870, police model pump 12 ga. shotgun. It was produced by Remington and only sold to active or retired agents. I'm pretty sure that there were fewer than 100 made.

BE Mike...yep...it WAS a Issue to Texas Rangers in the 1920-30's and the Border Patrol around the same time. Long gone to history. I am a real fan of all things lever. The Safest hunting rifle ever made was the Savage 99 with triple safeties... not that the 94 was unsafe. Nice rifle. Folks poo poo the 30-30..ive shot mine to 200 yds hitting a phone book every time...( bet some folks have no idea what a Phone book is).

The "long wood" forearms were on all 94 carbines with barrel bands until they were shortened in late 1950.

When I get back to Texas, I’m gonna get a lever action and start doing some pig hunting.

Very nice carbine. As far as the sight, just make sure you fold it down before putting it in a soft case. And, be sure to put it back up when you pull it out!
Although, after looking at yours, the ears look rounded and should be a little friendlier to a soft case.

I know lots of current and former BP agents, (including myself) who'd love to have that rifle and and I know more than a few that are looking for one. It originally came with a print and a nice sleeved box. I've never seen one in the flesh, just lots of photos. Nice score and price! Only commemorative I have from my time is the Iver Johnston Pony in .380 from the 60th anniversary of the BP in 1984, it's never been fired.

I can see right now, I'm gonna have to start making the rounds of pawn shops in my area instead of hanging out in gun shops so much.

You never know what you'll find. I actually lucked into this BP Win, as they had just put it out. I guess one of the regulars had already put in a low ball offer, so the manager was more than glad to sell it to me at the asking price.

While I was there, I also saw a no-lock 65-5 3" Ladysmith for $550. I went back two days ago and it was still there. Now it's in my safe. And I only paid $500 for it.
