Colt SAA .45 Colt
UPS just delivered my Colt .45 that I had sent to Bill Fuchs, Spring Creek Armory in Ten Sleep, Wyoming.
The gun was originally built as a 4 3/4 inch .357 Magnum with all parts blued, except the hammer, including the frame. It had Sambar Stag stocks on it when I acquired it, and I later had Elephant Ivory stocks mated to it.
The hammer notches were broken, so I sent it to John Kopec in Calif. and had him repair the hammer, CCH the frame, and install a 4 3/4" .45 Colt barrel and cylinder.
Recently I got the bug to change out the barrel to 5 1/2 inches, so I found a barrel on EBay, and shipped the gun to Bill.
He polished the parts, except for the frame, blued them, and had another 'smith CCH the hammer. He also did an action job on it and cut the forcing cone to 11 degrees. I have to say the hammer looks great with the frame.
I am extremely pleased with the outcome, and Bill does outstanding work, and has worked on a few of my SAA's.
Now the dilemma I have is, do I keep the Stags on the gun or put the Ivories on it, as I have the .44 Special that he mated Stags too also.

Very nicely done.
Just my opinion, FWIW, but I've always liked ivory grips on SAA guns. They just seem to go together, like chocolate and peanut butter.

Well, I just put the Ivories on it, and they do go together with the polished gun.

Thanks. I do find the ivory grips more pleasing, but it is your gun, afterall, so whatever you like should be good.
But the ivories are better.

I'll be the odd ball and say I like the vintage Samber Stag the best. I think it goes with the cased colors better. I would vote Ivory on an all blued gun. JMHO.

bgrafsr ... The ivory is certainly beautiful but as a sucker for Sambar Stag stocks, they are my preference for that Colt. Bill, if you decide ivory is your final choice and want to find a new home for those Stag set, please let me know.

Well, I guess I can switch out the stocks now and then. Haven't shot it yet, but going to try and do that this upcoming weekend if possible.
I do like the looks of the Ivory on the gun, but I also like the Stags as well.

I like both. Here's a couple of mine. A pre War .38-40 with Ivory and a Pre War .44-40 with Sambar Stag...

This is a tough problem. I like both sets of stocks. I think maybe you should buy another SAA with factory stocks and the get one of your existing sets of stocks fitted to it. That would solve some of the problems. But then you would have an extra pair of factory stocks and would have to look for an SAA that needed a pair of stocks.

Kind of hard to go wrong there. Since you have a .44 & a .45 I'd put ivories on 1 & stags on the other. You didn't mention that .45 has timed screws, the mark of a good gunsmith (timed horizontally is the mark of a master gunsmith).

A vote for the Sambar stags. (Normally, I like ivory on a nickeled gun.) The stags just win going away on that revolver. Great looking combination.

When I shot SASS, I eventually settled on a pair of 45 Colt SAA's==had ivory installed. Loved them. Something about the white against a blue or case-hardened gun.

Dang, all the Sambar Stag grips in this post are exceptional.
Charlie,
Yours may be the nicest I have seen! Did they come on the gun or did you add them later?
Bill,
Ivory started out strong, but Stag was the big finisher, I believe! Either one is a winner though.

I have never been able to get excited about Ivory. Plain white just doesn't add much for me.
The other problem I have is that I can blink and they look like cheap plastic . Yes, I know that is sacrilege.
The Sambar Stags on the other hand just scream complexity and variety. That surface biodiversity just melds the ecosystem and herd that makes multifariousness a reality No two seem to ever look alike.
If that patina starts to turn into an all-over yellow or red hue, my knees go weak.
