Default Need Help Choosing Magazine Loaders

Over the last year, the Arthritis in my hands has advanced to the point where it's downright painful to fully load my magazines. I don't have very many bottom feeders, but seek your advice on the following handguns:
Colt 1911 Gov'nt Model 45acp
Walther PPK-S 380auto
S&W M41 22LR
I also could use help loading my Ruger 10-22 rotary mags. Whatever suggestions you can offer are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I have had very good luck with the Uplula, but I don't know if they make one for any of those except the 1911.

I'm also a fan of the Uplula mag loader. I have two; I keep one in my range bag and one at home.

They sell a guide to make it easier to use with single-stack mags like the 1911.

They also sell a "baby" Uplula that works with .22-.380 mags.

Hope that helps.

The genius that makes the UpLula so crazy popular is that one tool works across MANY magazines. In gun forums, if you ask “mag loader?” and 10 guys reply, you usually get 12 votes for the UpLula.

I have one and I would definitely rather have it than no mag loader. However, 25 yrs in and my choice is still the good old HKS loader.

Big problem with the HKS is they are (generally) kind of gun specific. In this way, most folks prefer an UpLula.

My argument continues to be that when it comes to actual use, I like the HKS much better, easier to use and does not require a table or bench top (or pressed on your thigh), it gives your thumb easy leverage.

I don’t think I can change the minds of any UpLula fans and I don’t need to try. (HKS sends me no kickbacks!) But I know what works and let me also say that the one I bought in 1994 still hasn’t broke and I use it ALL the time.

I have been using magazine-fed firearms for over 50 years. Never a problem until a year or so ago when I acquired a Sig P229, and loading the magazines was both difficult and painful for me. Asked around, ordered the Uplula loader, problem solved! Same loader works for single and double stack mags, 9mm thru .45ACP, and I understand they offer a version for the .22LR also.

One word of warning: some of the dealers advertising on-line are selling counterfeit knock-offs made of inferior materials that won't get the job done properly or for very long. Order from a known and trusted source.

My opinion is that there are two viable options...listed in no particular order...

1. Maglula
2. Maglula

Most 22 mags have a small extension of the follower on one side. A field expedient loading assist is to place a water or pop bottle cap over the extension so you push down with your off hand thumb as you slide in rounds with your primary (strong) hand.

For 10-22's; Butler Creek makes an after market mag with "Hot Lips" of about 25 round capacity. They have a loader for this, MAYBE it will work on factory rotary mags. I own about 15 OEM mags, I load the old fashion way before I go plinking, that way I don't spend field time dropping tiny 22 ammo from my fumbling hands.

Thumbs up

I saw the Uplula magazine loaders for sale for years, but I knew I'd never need such a silly thing. That is until I lived long enough to get arthritis in my hands. Now I don't go to the range without the Uplula. I load single and double stack magazines with it, 9MM, 38 Super, 10MM, .45 ACP, etc. Not so "silly" anymore, and it works just as well as advertised. What a concept!

No experience with loaders intended for .22 rim fire magazines.

Maglula is the company, Uplula is the universal pistol (the "up" in uplula) mag loader.

I don't have arthritis but I can't load a double stack, high cap 9mm. Big fan of the Uplula. Those last rounds don't want to go in.

I finally got the arthritis problem loading mags. About two weeks ago ordered a Maglula, and think it is the best thing since sliced bread. I am doing much more shooting and enjoying it more.

I recall seeing uplulas made for Ruger 10/22s - check their catalog.

I too use the Uplula loader for my full size and Shield mags.

And for my 22’s, I picked up a Hilljak loader off Amazon. Inexpensive and works great in multiple brands.

Uplula fo sho. I fell in love with them when shooting USPSA competition. Loading up 4-5 magazines between stages is not too fun. With the loader, it made it not a chore any longer.
When my father complained about having to load his shield magazines, I got one for him, and it solved his problem that came from having arthritis in his hands.

Don't screw around and get an Uplula. Ignore every other suggestion.
You will be happy you did.

For the Model 41 S&W, get the HKS loader. It's very inexpensive and works perfectly. I've been using one for years.

My Uplula works flawlessly for .22LR, .380ACP, 9mm, .45 ACP, single and double stack with the available adapter.
If it works with my arthritic fingers, it'll work for you.
Good luck!
