First I'll plainly state...I'm Smith & Wesson and USA brands, wood and blued steel all the way....rifles, shotguns, handguns.

BUT!!!!!!!!!! (you knew it was coming):

Just dragged out ye ole Remington, Nylon 66, date code P-G (June 1960) in Seneca Green (yea..yea...I know, I've heard it way too much: "yours is Mohawk Brown, not Seneca Green"). Well that's a load of bovine you know what. The SG does photo like a MB, but you look at this beauty in sunlight and it IS the drab olive green (NOT the greenie-green of the K-Mart Model 77 year later).

This lightweight (4 lbs) semi-auto rifle holds 14 rounds of 22 LR and is darned accurate. It can be fired on what appears to be full auto by fanning the trigger. I've never felt like wasting ammo but I did see a you tube sometime back showing a guy fanning the trigger and "fugidabout a bump stock" his Nylon 66 looked like full auto.

A heck of a business gamble for Remington in 1959, but I suppose having a full load of Dupont Engineers aboard didn't hurt.

Anyway...I had almost forgot the joy of this little rifle until another grandson, about to turn 12 asked, and I said sure, I'll be more than happy to help you gain some marksmanship skills, now that you've got the BB gun down pat and are demonstrating safe gun handling every time out.

So....just for fun...….open question to any readers of this post:

I've always read and understood that there are only two kinds of rifle people when it come to the Nylon 66....those that love-em, and those that hate-em.

I always liked them for a fun plinker. Very reliable and seemed to be more accurate than a rifle that light had a right to be.
Heard that it wasn't a good idea to try and disassemble one, as they were tough to get back together. Don't know how true that statement is.

Never actually owned one, though.

!st rifle I ever held in my life, was 5 years old,60 years ago. As I recall,all nickle,black stock,taller than me, that was the extent of my allowed involvement,just hold it straight with butt on floor.
That memory has always stayed just as vivid as the shiny nickle barrel,ya kinda never forget your first.

Looks to be in decent shape. Heard quite a collectors item today. Saw many available in the late 60s-70s but had to have a 10/22 myself. Must have caused quite a stir in the wood only days of the 60s. Thanks for sharing.

Dad had one when I was a kid. I didn't care much for it because it was "plastic" We always shot the bolt action .22's with hardwood stocks. I think my youngest brother has the Nylon 66 now. It was/is Mohawk Brown. I'm still prefer wood over plastic 50 some years later.

The MB was my first squirrel rifle gifted from my Grandfather, It's not going anywhere. The K-Mart magazine fed was a gift to myself, It's not going anywhere.

Been watching an AB in the LGS....May just make an offer on it tomorrow. Guess that puts me in the Love em' camp

One of the greatest firearms ever made. Especially since it was my first. If I was president of Remington, I would have a crew going 24/7 in shifts to bring it back as quickly as possible. I would restore Remington’s profitability in a year or less with it, reintro of Wingmaster in .410, .28., .20, .16 and 12, original 1911 .45, the Model 11 Shotgun, Model 24 Rifle, Model 3200 Shotgun.

I got my first rifle about 1970 or '71, and it's a Mossberg (blues steel and wood stocked) 22 LR, model 341. A year or so later my first cousin and best friend (RIP Billy), who was 2 years my junior, got his first rifle. It was a Nylon 66, and I made fun of him and his "plastic" rifle. LOL

Now here it is some almost 50 years later, and my rifle might be worth $150 bucks, where his is worth 3 times as much (or more). Who's laughing now.......

It really never did grow on me much, but he liked it just fine. I still prefer my own $150 blued steel and wood gun. But that's just because we've grown to be such good buddies over the years.

Got one also in Senaca Green. Got it cheap because my LGS didn't want it. I thought it was a brown when I bought it, didn't realize it was SG until I got it home and compared it to the MB one I had and did some research. I had never seen one before and had no idea they existed, SG is the rarest of the Nylon 66 rifles and they bring a premium, when you can find them.

I love the Nylon 66 rifles and find them durable and accurate. My SG is in 99% condition, not sure the owner ever shot it. If he did, it doesn't show. The guy that owned it before me was older and just wanted to get rid of it, probably for what he paid for it new, and that's what I got it for, plus a payment to the FFL. He didn't know what he had, neither did the LGS where he brought it to sell, which didn't want it, and neither did I until I goy home.

You don't need to lube the gun because the nylon is slick and there are few steel parts...this was a selling point when it first came out. My advice is to NOT take it apart unless you are mechanically inclined and have a good memory for how you took it apart.. Lots of pieces. I took my MB apart and had to take it to a gunsmith to reassemble it.

Haven't fired my SG rifle, but if it's as accurate as my MB was, that's good enough.

finish. I really like it. Shoot it one aimed shot at a time from a rest and
you will be amazed at how accurate a light weight "plastic" rifle can be.

I got my Nylon 66 for Christmas in 1961, first new firearm I had ever had. A buddy had one and I had tried his out months before. Love at first sight. You could only shoot long rifles in it, but that was ok by me. It had the so-called "tip-off" grooves on top of receiver and I put a cheap scope on mine about a year later. That little rifle accounted for lots of small game, and 3 or 4 whitetail deer also. Three quick shots in the neck and they dropped like a pile of rocks! I don't have it anymore, got stolen later on in life. I wish Remington WOULD bring it back, I would be first in line for one.

Sure seemed like a gun ahead of it's time looking back now. Plenty guns offered now with composite or synthetic stock. I realize this is partially due to the higher cost of black walnut but these guns do have a place.

My significant other and I stopped by our LGS last week and low and behold they had a nylon 66 Apache there on consignment. The rifle was in very good condition. Turned out to be a 1975 production date. She had bought one about 10 years before and really loves it. Very accurate plinker

She talked them down from $299 to $200 and took it home. I've shot her original one occasionally, but still prefer my Winchester Model 63's for plinking.

I think all of us who grew up in the 1960's wanted a Nylon 66. Remember ads for them in all the outdoor magazines. One ad touted how the Native Americans in Alaska used them in the extreme cold for hunting. Never got one but I look them over time when I see one at a gun show. Most seemed to be priced in the $300 range. Last year I was helping a retired friend (Vietnam Vet) who had hip replacement. He told me to go to the closet and get a rifle case - that he wanted to show me the Nylon 66 his nephew had gifted to him a few days earlier. Said he told his nephew one time he always wanted a Nylon 66 and the nephew show up one day with a Mohawk brown one for him. Had found it at a local gun shop. When I returned the next day to sit with him I took him 100 rounds of 22LR and my cleaning kit.

We haven't gotten out to shoot it yet but one day we will!

Considered the most reliable .22 rifle in human history. Love it!!

I was at a gun show and a guy had a real nice model 11 bolt action for like 135 bucks I bought on the spot . still watching for a 66.

I'm not exactly sure which came first. I have a Savage 87 with a "Tenite" stock. I THINK it's from the 50's.

My Dad and I each bought one in the late 70s He brought his to his weekend farm mine stayed at home. His grandsons learned to shoot with them, burned up lots of ammo most at the farm. He is gone now so I have both, great guns both Mohawk Brown.

I always thought they were cool and one thing about Remington, their guns always just seem to fit me and for a light 4lb gun the 66 will hold pretty steady. Never been crazy about butt feed guns but if I found one at a great price I would jump on it.

I had a 22/.410 combo with a Tenite stock. Lightweight but a fragile stock.

I have an Apache Black model . Black stock & chrome barrel & receiver cover . Not too subtle ! I purchased it when I was in high school . The guy I bought it from brought it into school for me to look at . He pulled it out of his locker right in the hallway with other students all around. I took a look at it right there ,paid him the money for it & put it in my locker . I later left with it tucked under my arm . No one really paid any attention . Better not try that today !
Anyway I did a lot of hunting with it over the years and while it's not beat up it does show some wear.

I'm squarely in the LOVE THEM category!

I have a couple of nice Mohawk Brown models and an Apache Black and chrome that is pre-serial number in mint condition. There's many variations and others like the 10, 11, 76, etc. ALL are great guns in my opinion.

As light and accurate as they are your 10 year old can pack one all day long thru the woods squirrel or rabbit hunting and never get winded.

I used to have an XP100 also sporting that DuPont Zytel stock; and still own the bolt action Nylon 11 with scarce 24 inch barrel. Now THAT one is a super tack driver too.

It's fun when folks whine about their favorite gun manufacturer cutting costs and switching to a "plastic" trigger guard or trigger or other part. They warn that quality is suffering and things won't last like they used to. You can remind them that 60 years ago these Remington "plastic" rifles had that same "junky" reputation and seem to have faired pretty well.

Back in 1963 they had one on display in the Goodyear tire store in my small town. I was 14 years old and I wanted it so bad I could taste it. But, Dad said no. He thought the nylon stock would warp. So what did I end up getting? Ha, nothing. Ever. Thanks Dad.

I bought one of the brown and blue ones in 72 or 73, maybe a bit earlier. I think I bought it at a Cooks Discount Department Store. I liked it.

A couple of years later my ex-brother-in-law came to visit and didn't think it was clean enough and proceeded to take it apart and clean it. He then tells me he broke something so I gave it to him. He flew with it on the plane with him back to LA.

I'd replace it if I could get a decent one at a reasonable price. I don't like them enough to pay big bucks for one.

Love mine, neglect it for years load it and it works like the day i put away.

The Nylon 66 wasn't the first gun with plastic furniture. I don't know how many there were, but I have owned two old guns with Tenite stocks - a Savage O/U .410/.22 and a Noble pump .22. Long gone by now, but I believe both dated from the 1940s.

Currently I have a Remington 10C Mohawk, brown, basically a 66 but with a 10-shot removable box magazine. I think I paid around $150 for it about three years ago. It required a little work, but nothing I couldn't handle. But that 10 round mag does get in the way. A 5-round magazine would be more handy. It shoots fairly good groups, about an inch at 25 yards, and it functions well. I've heard that the plastic Remington .22s were very popular among Eskimos and northern Canada Indians because they were so reliable in arctic cold conditions.

Like others here, I had wanted one since I was a kid. But by the time I was a senior in high school, my taste had turn to deep blue with gorgeous walnut stocked rifles. I forgot about the little Nylon 66. A few years ago, a guy who I knew from my local shooting club walked into my office and offered me a MB '66 (going through a divorce and needed money). It was lust at first sight again, and yes, he went home without it.

I had one when I was in college. Great little shooter. I can't remember if I sold it or traded it on something else. If I could find another one at a decent price, I'd buy it.

I have my granddaddy's .22/.410 Stevens with the Tenite stock and forearm. He bought it at the beginning of WW II to keep the bunnies out of his garden. I don't consider it fragile. I dropped it on a frozen pond and knocked off the rear sight, but the stock wasn't hurt at all.

Looked at an AB and a MB today.....I'm not willing to entertain an offer on either. They are both priced higher than a kite.

I'll just enjoy shooting mine that much more while those two gather dust.....

You got that right! Some years ago a friend of mine brought me one with most of the parts in a coffee can. Its seems that years before his Dad had taken it apart to clean it and could never get it back together. It had since rested in the back of a closet in pieces. He asked if I could figure out what was missing and put it back together for him.
I spent most of one whole day just trying to figure out just what parts were missing. Once I got the parts and even with the help of J.B. Wood's book, it was still most of two days of fussin' and cussin' to get it back together.
Of course, then I had to test fire it. Worked perfectly, surprisingly accurate and actually a whole lot of fun.
Its a nice rifle and a good shooter. But that experience has left me with no desire to own one.

Mine is a bit of a hybrid. It was originally Mohawk Brown but about 20 years ago it fell out of a closet onto a concrete slab and the stock snapped in half right above the pistol grip. I found a good used Apache Black stock and swapped it all out, so now it is Black and Blue from the fall...

I have 3 one of which is the Apache Black. (so that's my vote) It was my "grail" gun when I was a kid. Always wanted one. All those ads in Boys Life Mag and shooting the blocks of wood. Heck there is a forum on them

I solved this problem by never cleaning mine other than to wipe if down occasionally, drip some #9 down the barrel, let it sit over night, then blow everything out with compressed air every couple of years. And I only went to that trouble every couple of years whether it needed it or not. Never had a problem either.

Bought one in my teens (mid-60's) to go shooting with some buddies. They initially made fun of my plastic rifle. Until they shot it and did better than they did with their own guns. It laid dormant for several years because one of my friends took it to clean it and couldn't figure out how to put it back together.
My brother has more patience than I do and was able to figure it out. Once he did, he fell in love with it and went out and found his own. 55 years later we still include them in our trips to the old
range up near the cottage. Mine looks like new and is always the gun of choice when introducing the sport to the younger generations in the family. Love it and it isn't going anywhere.

Mcgoo is the expert on the nylons'. Thanks to his videos I was able to repair my MB.

Using his instructional video's for a complete disassembly and reassembly... I'll never remove the feed ramp again nor strip the trigger group

Yea, one of my dad's ranch beaters.

I like the Remington Nylon series so much that I became a serious collector of them, and have at least one of almost every variation. The only rarity I do not have is the Nylon 66 Gallery Special with an Apache Black stock, #1 on the value index chart below. Only 465 were made. The bolt action Nylons are interesting in themselves; I have photos of them which you can view here:

I am often questioned about the varieties extant and their values, so I put together a couple of reference sheets, reproduced here:





I covered the Nylon 66 in my book 101 Classic Firearms. For those who have a copy, that chapter can be found on pages 180-181. I was always impressed with its reliability, durability and accuracy, and put together my collection of Nylons out of fascination with the breed. They are also amazing investments, with values on the rarer specimens bringing incredibly high prices now.

By the way, the first U.S. use of a plastic stock material on a firearm was probably on the WWII version of the U.S. Browning Automatic Rifle - its black buttstock.

Many .22s and shotguns had no SNs prior to GCA-1968, which required SNs for everything. The Remington Nylon semiautos didn't actually have a receiver in the conventional sense, so the SN was stamped on the sheet metal cover.

I have several old .22s with no SNs, but I have stamped my own ID number on them in unobtrusive areas in the event I need to identify them at some future time. Those made before the serial numbering requirement are not illegal.

One is a Remingtion Nylon66, the other is one of the Brazilian copies.
