Wow, she's a beauty. Feeling a bit envious. I hope she shoots as good as she looks!

Doesn't look used at all. Should be a shooter.

I have one just about like that made in 1959. I mounted a Lyman Super Targetspot 15x scope on it, and that thing will shoot into 1” at 200 yds with 200 gr Sierra match bullets. I think you’re really gonna enjoy that rifle!

Model 70 Match Rifle
Lucky you! That's a sweet looking piece of iron.
Here's my circa 1947 Model 70 Match rifle. I also have a set of Redfield International sights for it as well as the Unertle that is currently mounted.

Beautiful rifle! You are most fortunate! Now, get yourself some proper sights ... and ammo ... and head yourself out to the range pronto! Then ... range report! Pictures! Sincerely. bruce.

Mine I believe is a post '64 with the push feed. Paid the sellers price no questions asked. And somewhere in my stash is a Redfield International with the Big Bore front sight. And a set of scope blocks. Think I'll sacrifice a couple boxes of 1963 lake city match to find out how well the old girl will shoot. Thanks for sharing as I haven't seen any of the old Model 70 match rifles in over 20 years. I have the same model in .308 and love it. Lots of fun shooting using those Target sights to shoot groups at 100 yards (which is close for some of you guys).

I had a Remington 700 30-06 with the hard butt plate like that one and only 12 rounds had my shoulder hurting the next day. I can shoot lots of 12 gauge magnum shells with no problem at all with a recoil pad.

Thanks, guys!
I'm really looking forward to getting out on the range with this one. Will post a range report on more detailed pictures.

Love those Marksman stocks. I have a 70 Target in .220 Swift from 1948 with a Unertl 2" Varmint Scope and a .30-06 from 1957 with the original Intrnationals.

An iron sighted bolt action target gun in .30-06 is a joy! I shot NRA Highpower with a "targetized" O3A3 with Lyman sights for about 15 years, and just let the AR crowd stare in awe at the old guy with the old gun that could navigate through a rapid fire string! I can't see from the pics, does it have the clip slot for stripper clips?
Another aspect to those guns is that they can REALLY perform with cast lead bullets at moderate velocities. I shoot either a 155 or 190 grain cast gas check bullet over 16 grains of Alliant 2400. You can shoot it all day (and afford to,) not beat up your shoulder or wear your bore, and you would not believe how accurate it is!
Best wishes with it!

This tired old veteran Model 70 in 30-06 cal. is similar to the OP’s. The serial number dates it between December 1941 and January 1942 according to what I can find. It was rebarreled in 1956 and could use a new one again (or have this barrel set back to clean up the throat). I don’t know what sights were on it originally but it has a Redfield International rear and Olympic front sight combination now.

Calfed,
I'm betting you won't be disappointed. I shot one just like that "across the course" for many years and a second one in .308 after that. Great rifles when Winchester knew what they were doing.

Calfed,
Hard to tell from the photo but it looks like a "push feed" post 64 gun. Not a thing wrong with those guns and they were actually very smooth guns. My .308 was a push feed gun and was so slick you'd think it was broke.

Yep, it is a push feed Model 70. I kinda wish it was a pre 64, but I got it for a sweet deal.

What load do you use with those 168's, Ed?

55 grains of H4350, gave me an average of 5/16 inch groups.
57 grains of 4831 gave me a 3/8ths inch group, always with one flyer.
These were 100 yard groups and were with Sierra 168 grain HPBT, they were pretty hot and I would suggest you work up to them.
58 grains of 4350 would stick a case but shot very well.
Those were the two powders that shot best in this rifle, groups were shot in 1976.
Hope they work for you!

54.5 to 55.5 with IMR 4350 always gave me excellent accuracy and the 54.5 to 55.5 Imr 4350 was the sweet spot in working up loads expecially with the 68 gr Sierra Match King bullet that and the CCI LR magnum primer. I've used that load in 4 match rifles, one standard Model 70 and the latest is a Sako 75 Hunter in 30-06 except the bullet is the Nosler Ballistic tip. Will do an honest 2800 feet per second chronographed. Far as I know all match rifles had the clip slots milled into the receiver since when they first started making them. remington's don't have them and you have to buy the clip adaptor for the stripper clips they look like an old Springfield stripper clip. Any of the three 4350 powders work well in .30-06, but H4895 or IMR4895 is certainly worth trying. 4895 was used for US .30-06 WWII loads and still works very well for bullets in the 150-168 grain range.

I don't own one because I'm not a big game hunter. That said, I've shot many of friend's M70's and love them! If I ever did get into big game hunting the M70 Winchester is one I would consider very strongly - GREAT rifle, enjoy!

I previously owned a Mod. 70 pre 64" target rifle, in 30.06, with a marksman stock. The figure in the wood made it one if the prettiest stocks that I have ever owned and was a great shooter.
My second Mod. 70 target rifle was also a factory rifle but, an Ultra Match in .308. It was on its second barrel, a factory target barrel. It was replaced by a rifle that I built on a pre war Mod. 70 action, also in .308 in a Dunlap style, McMillian stock with a jewel trigger.
As fate had it, I ran across a pre 64' target action and built my final bolt action match rifle. It is in a McMillian 40X modified stock and wears its third barrel, another Hart. Currently it is set up as my mid range (600 yd.) rifle but, I still have a Warner rear sight and an Anschultz front sight for across the course, if I get that brave again. It is a hammer.

Wow...jdlii, you have quite a history with Winchester 70 target rifles!
A few years ago I glommed a Winchester model 70 match rifle that had a huge .308 Hart barrel. It came with a really nice, Jewel HVR trigger, RPA "Trakker" rear sight and an interesting variable globe front sight.
