Default Do you have a desk knife? One to open mail or intruders?

I keep knives at my computer desk, to open mail, candy and cereal bar wrappers, etc.

I rotate them, to have the fun of using my knives.

Just now, there are a Puma Hunter's Pal, a Fallkniven U-2, a Victorinox Camper, a Vic. German Army pocket knife, and a Victorinox Hunter.

These are scattered about the desk, some in a snack box.

What do you have?

Years back I picked up a cheap CRKT (M16-10X.) at a gun show. I put it on my desk and its been opening my mail since then.

For opening the daily junk mail, I have my trusty and formidable wooden camel, which came from parts unknown and has been in my family for decades.

To "open" intruders, I rely on my "shoots around corners" model 442-1. I keep a bullet in my pocket.

Just kidding.

I usually just have my EDC Delica, Wharncliffe'd to ~2.5", either on me or close by.

But I also have this Ladybug nearby.

I have other knives, but I usually just keep them in a box in the closet.

Hey Mike, that last one’s Japanese, right? The bayonet? I picked up one like that, though scabbard is in better shape, in, of all places, Gettysburg, for $50 back in 1992 when I was hanging around waiting for a locksmith to unlock my rentacar.

What do you have?
I used to be a purveyor of hign end art knives. Many still flow through my
hands

Several of the pieces that ar part of my personal collection are also rotated for Desk Duty

I have a couple of hand made Tank knives left from Allen Elishewitz.

Plus a hand made custom flipper from Mikkel Willumsen located in Copenhagen, Denmark

This wild hand made, custom Damascus folding dagger from André Anderson in Sweden is probably my favorite

And there are half a dozen others including some Bowies from Larry Feugen and a dagger from Todd Fischer

There are actually 3 or 4 swords plus my walking sticks in the umbrella stand at the front door

Well, if we're including nearby knives, add S -1 and A-1 Fallkniven and a pair of machetes, a Brazilian one with 18" blade and a Salvadoran one with a 12" blade. Quite handy.

I just rotated a Buck Model 105 like that seen above, and have a Buck Model 119 (75th year version) in reserve.

My choice of a pistol for office defense is a Beretta M-92FS. Loaded with Gold Dot or Federal HST 124 grain Plus P ammo.

Have a little mini knife.... believe it's made by Hen & Rooster. Kinda looks like a Spyderco but it's not.

I have a couple of old stilettos that serve mail and package duty. Both say Italy. The one that has stainless blade with brass liners, brass bolsters and very dark wood scales, says Rostfrei. The one that has carbon steel blade and liner, white pearlite looking plastic scales and chrome or nickel bolsters isn't branded. Both are the identical shape although something about the stainless one just looks better quality. The carbon version has obviously been sharpened many more times. I don't remember where I got them. They might have come from my fathers junk drawer. They work very well for what I use them for. They could be 50 years old or more although I wouldn't think the stainless one could be.

Yes sir. My father brought it home from the South Pacific following WWII. I've held off numerous banzai attacks in my back yard with it during my formative years.

I use my Mini Buck, but it does not stay sharp long. I am not sure if that blade will hold an edge.

Nope, I just tear letters open because most of them are just junk and it's quicker than delicately opening them with a knife or letter opener.

That said, I do have a Cold Steel Ti-Lite VI that I often use to open packages, and I always keep my Ruger LCP in my pocket incase of emergency.

If there is a knife in the drawer of this desk, it's probably lost forever. I have a Spyderco in my pocket, but I don't use it for envelopes. There is a .45 within reach for other things.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

"Do you have a desk knife? One to open mail or intruders?"

Well, I would not want to open an intruder. Not because I care about the health of intruders, but because intruders are known for being dirty and un-hygienic. So, if I opened an intruder, his diseases would quickly become my diseases. And in this day and age of diseases, that would not be good. So, it's quite the quandary, isn't it?? If you get all stabby with a bad guy, you could regret it later. What to do, what to do?? To stab, or not to stab, that is the big question. And, if you stab, how deep? And, do you also slice, or just stab, or, what?? As you can see, I'm very confused by this thread...

It's a fun pistol to shoot. You are correct, but so far paper has not stopped one.

It's not good to be in a quandary. As bad as being in a maze

Whatever knives I happen to have in my pocket(s) will suffice for opening mail. Intruders I dunno, but a Swiss Army knife, or a switchblade, or a Schrade Old Timer, various locking folders, etc. I don't keep one in the desk drawer......

That's probably good advice but I prefer to avoid EVER getting into a knife fight. I have guns that will help with that - I hope. In a knife fight one fighter goes to the hospital and the other goes to the morgue. Let's be careful out there!!!

They just seem to accumulate there. L-R, A Havalon my wife found on the riverbank, a Gerber folder I've had for 30+ years, cleaned a lot of game, an NRA giveaway, An outdoor edge Razorlite that was a gift, actually works well, a vintage Ka-Bar, and another NRA freebie. The good knives are in the safe, the better tools are in my hunting gear....
And on the far right just outside the pic is a 40 Shield 2.0....

I open my mail with a Benchmade Emissary but these may be able to help with an intruder.

They sure come in all shapes and sizes. Cheap and very expensive knives to choose from. Got a few but that Sog Trident tanto usually fills my pocket for most smaller tasks. The Aus-8 steel really takes an edge.

OK, I mentioned the Umbrella stand in my earlier post

Here is what sits just next to my front door

It had a few more swords in it than I recalled.

I had forgotten that I moved the Cavalry sabers up from the old house

I do not have a desk knife. I consider such a thing about like a letter opener ... an anachronism. I do however have on my desk a tactical package opener. It is a V-42 replica made a few years ago by Boker. It is a very fine tactical package opener. It is also very effective at piercing body parts. I can state plainly that if it should fall out of the sheath while one is moving it from the table to the desk, if it lands point first, it will penetrate completely through your foot and enbed itself in the floor. My wife will tell you that my tactical package opener was not hard to extract and that no bones, ligaments, tendons or nerves were damaged ... very lucky indeed. She cleaned up the cut, bandaged it and then I went to a meeting at church. When I returned home she redressed the wound. Three days later ... I was back to light jogging. Two weeks later, I was back to running. Nice to have a excellent nurse with 23 years of experience to tend to getting stuck with a tactical package opener on a otherwise uneventful Sunday afternoon. Sincerely. bruce.

There is always a selection of knives on my desk, available for whatever duty may present itself. Once in a while, if I am messing with my Opinels, I might have a whole pile of opinels.

There will usually be one or two Anzas, a CRKT folding razel, my Laconico Keen flipper, Baryonyx Grimalkin, Varusteleka Mini Skrama, Becker BK14 Eskabar, and three Moras clipped to my mail divider. There is also an uglly red Frost trapper that never leaves my desk.

Other knives may cycle through, sometimes replacing the above list, other times just adding to the clutter. I never have to reach very far to open a letter, slice a salami or cut up an apple. In the unlikely event I needed to lacerate somebody, I would most likely reach for the Skrama or Condor Golok ready at my right hand.

Not cavalry sabers, per se. Those are the Model of 1902 For All Officers. Still Army standard, I believe.

Cavalry soon had the Patton saber, much like the British Model of 1908, Model 1912 in the fancier Officers edition. I think it's the most lethal sword issued in reasonably modern times. It was the result of a study of sword wounds and is meant for thrusts more than slashes.

Always better to get cut by a sharp knife than a dull one.

Wow, I never thought of it that way

Honestly,it started with just my three walking sticks, one of which is a sword cane. Then I started to think of the various swords scattered around the new house with no no place of their own yet.

The umbrella stand just seemed like the obvious place to put the swords until I decide to display or mount them

There is a folding screen that separates the foyer area and that "Bucket-O-Swords" from the living room.

My big old relaxing recliner, that I watch TV from, is just the other side of that partition . . . as is a suppressed auto loader, usually a SIG

Texas Star : The Stag handled is a #3 from about 1968, I believe $150 with name on blade.
The boot knife has petrified walrus ivory about 1974.

I've had a reproduction Scottish Sgian-dubh... stag handled, sock dagger on my desk since 1993.

My wife is always borrowing it to open the mail..............

Edit..... oh ya there's also a ..... 7.25" Ka-Bar Ultimate Fighting Knife,pairs nicely with the 5906 (17rd mec-gar mag) in the drawer.

Default I actually have a dedicated desk knife

It is a XXX USA Case Desk Knife with heavy leather desk sheath. It came in a beautiful box too. It was a present and I treasure it. I believe I have had it for almost 40 years.

I don’t think they make them any longer but you can occasionally pick up an original on-line at a price. It is one of my favorite knives.

Looks like a fixed-blade version of a Swayback Gent.

It’s sure does, just a fixed blade version! I just had to Google the Swayback. I am not very familiar with Case knives.
