Default 3" Colt Combat Python...

I picked this unfired beauty up last week. Made only one year in 1988 and was a Lew Horton exclusive. Less than 500 were built, all were Royal Blue.

Factory letter included with purchase...

Here it is on the far left with my other Pythons...

Nice gun, but I'm guessing it was (very) expensive.

Lovely gun and guns! I understand, perhaps mistakenly, that Colt intends to produce a 3" new Python later in the year. If the bugs have been worked out, I would have a hard time ignoring it.

The new Python is the cover story in the latest AR magazine. The author mentions the timing problem that plagued original Pythons, but he dances around the timing issue on the new guns.

Very Cool! I always thought 2-1/2 inches was too short for a .357 Magnum.

Beautiful, I wish S&W would make a 586 just like that Colt.

Here's a pic with my 3.5" RM, since this is S&W forum.

Default Makes you want to cry......

In the late '80s my hometown had a pawn shop/gunshop that my dad and I would poke our heads in regularly.

Recall, this was when "everybody" wanted a Wonder9 with maximum capacity magazines. Seemed like you couldn't give away a nice revolver, but folks lined up to buy Beretta 92s.

In the case sat two Pythons new-in-original-boxes. One 3", one 2-1/2". The price on each? $350.00. They sat there until the shop went out of business.

Yes, I could kick myself.....many times. I recall thinking how funny Pythons looked with service grips, and how the short barrels wouldn't look right with target grips. How wrong was that, eh?

To make matters worse, a few years later my dad was still hunting a 3-1/2" Model 27, and I was wanting a 5". We looked for years, pre-internet. At a gunshow he came across TWO new-in-box Model 27s in 3-1/2" on the same table. The guy said either was $450. Dad was trying to decide which one he liked better, and the guy said, "Okay, I'll do $400 on either." Dad bought one, and we left the other on the table since I was after a 5". Ugh! I was obviously one fry short of a Happy Meal.

God Bless, Marc

I'm not a big Colt fan, but I've got to say that is a beautiful revolver! One of the nicest Pythons I've ever seen.

Back then I bought two of the 3-inchers
but never really fell in love with them.
And besides I liked Smith & Wessons.

Sold them and have never really regretted
doing so though now they seem to be in the
$4,000-plus category.

When it came to the Pythons, only one group
really appealed to me and that was the
6-inch blue models from the 1960s.

Even on those the double action triggers turned
me off for regular shooting. I was well aware
of the timing issues.

I've never bought a gun as an investment or
as a collector's item.

Whoa!! That would be my cabinet queen for sure. Just looking at it 24-7 would make my day for years on end. Sure hope Colt will make the Python with the royal blue finish again and perfect it.

Awful purty revolvers those pythons. Who cares how much it cost? You wanted one now you got one. Plus they're only going to get harder to find so why not grab one when the opportunity presents itself.
