Exclamation Black Powder (Try It)

Guys now is the time to try black powder. I was at the Sportsman’s Warehouse here in Vegas at opening today. Massive line outside. The manager came out letting people know all major calibers were out of stock, including .22. Many people were complaining and clearly upset. I stuck it out and got inside, headed straight to the black powder section.

There were tons of boxes of round balls, percussion caps, wadding, tools, powder horns, you name it. I bought 5 tins of percussion caps. Black powder seems to be immune to these ammo shortages. Here are some of my black powders:

They’re a hoot to shoot and so fun. The cap and ball revolvers such as the .44 caliber Remington shown above can also be effective personal defense weapons.

Another thing is guys, you DO NOT NEED AN FFL to buy most blackpowder guns, including the revolvers. This means that you can literally have them mailed straight to your front door in most states. I know my LGS is on a 6-day backlog for background checks and the lines and crowds their are insane. Black powder lets you avoid all of that.

It’s a world of its own. There are rifles, muskets, shotguns, pistols, revolvers, the list goes on. Guys below are some awesome blackpowder shops online I shop at and they sell guns, which again go go straight to your door:

Track of the Wolf - Muzzle Loading & Black Powder Guns Kits, Parts, Accoutrements, Rendezvous Gear & Primitive Americana
Dixie Gun Works muzzleloading, blackpowder and rare antique gun supplies.
Welcome

And here is an great forum to learn about black powder:

If you’ve ever been interested in black powder, this is a fantastic time to get into it. Mail order guns, no shortage of ammunition, and a tremendous amount of joy and reward. While everyone else is in line waiting to hoard a box of 9mm or .22, I’ll be out in the field shooting and making smoke!

Take care all!

-Jay

Four or five years ago, I was into BP. No one around me sold BP, so I had to order on line and since the HazMat charge is the same for a bulk, I bought six or so pounds. Still got most of it in my safe. Got a couple of FLs and a couple of Caplocks, and recently sold a H&A underhammer.

Fun to shoot but a lot of maintenance afterwards.

I picked up a mechanically sound, but finish worn Ruger old army a while back. Now I have 2 of them. Plus a couple 50 cal and a 54 cap lock. The second Old Army is going to get a 16- 18" barrel, forearm and stock. A revolving black powder carbine.

I prefer my black powder stuffed into a cartridge case but the prinviple is the same - lottsa smoke and smell! I have taken quite a lot of big game with these three including elk, antelope and deer. Makes for a sense of accomplishment.
