Default Best Grips For My Gold Cup

I was cleaning my 1911s tonight and, after successfully freeing my Herrett's D45 grips from a stuck grip screw/bushing (thanks to the member who PM'd me a tip), I decided to see which grips would work best for each gun. Inspired by bracebeemer's SAA grip thread, I thought I'd try a poll to see what y'all think are the best looking grips.

I'm going to do two threads, this one for my Gold Cup and another for my Government Model.

Here are the options:

Colt Gold Cup with the original Colt grips:

Colt Gold Cup with Herrett's D45 grips:

Colt Gold Cup with Hogue double-diamond checkered cocobolo grips:

Hard to really get better than original Colt checkered grip with the medallion but the Herrett's are some of the classiest grips ever made.
Both leave the double diamond in the dust.....!

Unless you want to go synthetic, I don’t think you’re accomplishing anything. I’d stick with the original colt grips for limited shooting, fondling and admiring.

Based on the choices offered, the D45s look pretty good

If you could come across a set of the Colt Ebony grips, you might like the look on that frame

I think they all look good, but I like the original Colt grips best.

Hogue Cocobolo for me, original Colt second, and the Herretts never ever!

is that a Kings gun works stamp near the back of the slide? Looks a lot like the one on a Officers ACP that they did extensive work on, back when. Top notch!

I voted for the Hogue's for the GC, but for the factory grips for the Gov't model. Just felt that those Hogue grips would do better on a 1911 that went a bit 'beyond'. The GC more than qualifies in that.

Good eye! My GC was indeed customized by King's Gun Works. Here's a close-up of the stamp:

Thanks for your input.

the Herrett D45's take me back to IPSC back in the late 70's early 80's... that is what a "tricked out" 1911 looked like... not batteries required...lol

Whatever grip you chose, get rid of
those horrible grip screws and go to
black/blue ones that blend better with
the grip.

LOL! I'll definitely consider that.

Edit: I think you're right. I just ordered a set.

IDK how it is now, but J.M.Browning made the slot in the grip screws to fit the rim of the .45acp cartridge.

I looked at the hex(?) screws on a couple of 1911s and wondered, what am I more likely to have handy? A .45acp cartridge, or that particular hex wrench?

Guess who won?

That is a good point. To counter, though, what circumstances am I likely to experience where I'll need to remove the grips but not have the right tool?

FYI, these are range guns, not carry/self defense guns.

lol, in close to 60 years of having and shooting 1911s, I've NEVER had to do a emergency grip change. Not once!

Besides the right tool, what's the likelyhood of having a spare set of grips on you?

It was more of another nod to the genius of J.M.Browning, being able to break the pistol down with itself and a cartridge.

I never thought about removing a grip on an outing, but have had instances where a grip screw needed to be tightened. I assure you I likely would not have a hex wrench to do so. I'm usually prepared, but not that prepared.
