I guess I look at wear a little bit differently that most, but here are three
examples of how I have treated wear.

On the left is my Gold Cup National Match. About twenty years ago it was
showing a lot of wear,
and was not 100% reliable (which I needed at the time),
so I sent it back to Karl Sokol who does business as Chestnut Mountain Sports.
He worked it all over using Ed Brown parts and put his
Mountain Tuff finish on it. The finish is really tuff. After almost
twenty years it still looks as good as new.
It also still works flawlessly and 100% reliable.
The knife it is shown with is an Ultimate 1911 model.

2nd from left is my S&W Model 67 no dash Combat Masterpiece.
When I bought it there were a lot of pits and scratches in the
stainless finish, so I had a local smith bead blast it. I like the
look and it has stood up well. I like the contrast of the black
rubber grips designed by Craig Spegel.

3rd from left is my Colt's Agent. I didn't know what to do about
the wear on it, so I used a diversion tactic. I figured you would
be looking at the gorgeous extended boots by Craig Spegel and
overlook the wear on the Parkerizing.

It's all good guys! I understand it's not for everybody, I used to be one not fond of it myself. However, I found keeping all my carry guns in pristine condition wasn't possible and decided to make this one my primary carry, upgrade all it's components with Wilson Combat Bullitt Proof parts (or better) and wanted a finish that would actually get better looking with age is all. I think I'm accomplishing that, it has grown on me now. Some like blued, some like stainless, some like Cerakote… there's no wrong answer.

Make a post in a public forum about a completely subjective topic and then tell someone they haven't been approved to have an opinion... wow. I'm sure you won't approve of this one either.

The entire premise of "Distressed" firearms are hilarious to me. The individuals that buy distressed guns or feel the need to distress them outside of natural means are the same individuals that buy their jeans with big holes in them; not that there is anything intrinsically wrong with this, but guys that come across honest holes in their jeans don't understand why you'd do it on purpose and the reasoning is the same with firearms. Us hard working men don't feel the need to distress items, because they become distress naturally and we are too busy working hard to take a scotchbright pad to a firearm.

Just buy guns for shooters and others for collectors, problem solved.

Your analogy might hold true for people who intentionally "distress" a new gun after they buy it. But old, beat to hell, but entirely functional guns don't really track because jeans with big holes in them have lost their actual functionality.

Guns without much finish left (often due to abuse or neglect) are wonderful because they let a guy like me who doesn't have endless funds to own some pretty cool guns, and shoot them, without breaking the bank and then feeling bad for potentially devaluing an expensive gun by using it for it's original purpose.

Someone taking a brillo pad to a gun to make it look the way they like is no different then sending it off to some place like Ford's for a re-blue. In both cases the gun will never look original again, but the person doing it/having it done is happy.

I think some guys are just reading the opening thread (maybe?) and are immediately jumping to "bash mode" without fully understanding the reasoning behind it to begin with.
No problem, everybody has a valuable opinion here.

I quite often buy guns that are finish-challenged. Coming from the milsurp collecting world I’ve come to believe that’s just part of the gun’s history. In addition it puts me in position to buy guns I couldn’t otherwise afford if they are as-new condition. I’m also not afraid to tinker in order to put an abused gun back in service. That helps, given my buying habits.

Personally, though, my opinion is “your gun, your money”. You should do what you want to your tools to make you happy.

That being said, I won’t artificially age a new gun. I may age replacement parts to match the gun’s appearance, but that’s it.

Agreed, I would never artificially age a new gun either, but to enhance that of one that's finish is already shot is another matter all together.

I like all of the guns presented here. Including the OP’s. Again, I think it is great that a gunowner can make a gun look however she or he desires-I can appreciate. New or used, all dogs go to heaven as far as I’m concerned.

So you take a gun with a finish that's already worn through actual use and take a Scotch Brite and make it worse so it will "look cool"?

You do you

Looks like the "carry finish" (as I call it) is a popular thing amongst most?
I have something very special coming in tomorrow, be prepared!

As promised, something special came in and it was my Stan Chen SI Magwell.
I'd heard his stuff was a work of art, but this thing is nicer than I expected and worth every penny. I had the blued one ordered and changed it to stainless at the last minute and so glad I did. I think it blends really well with the rest of the finish.

Default Project finally finished

Finally finished this project with the final addition of my Wilson Combat Tritium sights by Chuck Rogers at Rogers Precision, who did an outstanding job I might add. You may note some other changes I've made also.
I went with all stainless controls and finished the barrel off with a reverse crown. I'm very pleased with the way this project turned out.
The final build specs are:
1. Wilson BP Titanium firing pin;
2. Stan Chen one piece Mainspring housing;
3. Wilson BP Spring(s) tune-up kit;
4. Wilson G-10 grips/ pewter medallions;
5. EGW/Clark FLGR System and hand fit barrel bushing;
6. Wilson BP Stainless controls;
7. Reverse crown on the barrel;
8. Wilson Pyramid Tritium night sights;
9. Idiot scratch was gifted by previous owner, lol.

Idiot scratch adds just the right touch
My daily carry M&P380 has developed a nice wear patina around the edges-just enough to show it is actually being used. I like it. Guns are like cars. The first scratch, ding, dent or whatever just throws one into a tizzy, but after that, she ain't no virgin no more and ya accept the fact that in normal use dings just gonna happen. I just would rather that they be put there by me and not someone else. I bought a stainless no frills Colt Series 80 1911 for that very reason. It goes boom, then clankity clank and then boom again for as long as ya pull the trigger. It is tin can accurate at 25 yards if I do my part and has a faint idiot scratch. The only thing that I want to do with it is to put a flat mainspring housing on it (preference) and an ambi safety. Problem is I'm having a hard time finding one that matches the brushed matter stainless finish the gun came with.

I have one I ordered from Wilson Combat, unfortunately it's in blue, but decided to go with Stan's one piece flared magwell satin stainless. Wilson does have a flat one in satin stainless too fwiw. They're around $50 bucks if I remember correctly, but made out of solid bar stock, not mim?

I carried a Lightweight Enhanced Officers Model in stainless for a year, or so before I switched to Glock. My converted G27 has "working" modifications. One "pretty" mod was my extended magazine has a Compass and Square on the butt.

Function always trumps form, if it's not a "working" modification then what's the use?

Man made or natural age and wear. I love the look that comes from use. Nice examples of both posted here.

New I couldn't leave well enough alone. lol
I'm sending my slide back to Chuck to have a French border and an arrow pattern put on.
This is some of his work and how it'll look.
I knew I should have done it when he had it last time, urgh!
