Ruger super blackhawk project.
I picked up this super Blackhawk a couple of months ago, it had a slightly bulged barrel it was cheap so I though what the heck go for it.
I tossed around the idea of re-barreling it but decided to cut and re-crown it instead. I had to take two inches off the barrel to get past the bulge so I still had a 5 1/2 inch barrel to work with.
I thought about just putting a standard front sight back but had seen some custom guns with banded ramp sights that look really good so I ordered a sight from NCG.
I had to slightly modify the sight with a notch to slide over the ejector rod but all in all I think it turned out rather nice.

I also have a similar cut-down SB .44 Mag, except mine is blued and the original front sight was reattached to the shortened barrel. I formerly used it for CAS. I bought it very cheaply around 20 years ago from its former owner.

I could have saved a bit money by putting the original sights back on but I thought having seen some of the custom guns and liking them
that was the way to go, and honestly it was a test of my skills anyway.

Haven't tried it yet, even tough I have a place that's not connected to the outside world at this time I'm kinda" isolated to my home and shop.

That looks really cool and hopefully will shoot well too.
It has kind of a space or sci-fi cowboy look to it with that front sight.

Elmer Keith had some of his custom six guns fitted with similar looking front sights...Very Elegant Looking , Nice Job !!!

Here are a couple more photos of the business end. I had noticed that most of the custom makers using this style if sight left the barrel slightly proud of the sight so I went with that look.
I used a 45 degree crown rather then a 11 degree just because I like that look better.

FANTASTIC work. It reminds me of the 45 Seville that Linebaugh built for Ross Seyfreid to use on a Cape Buffalo. Classic elegance.

I have to ask, although you may not know, how in the world did someone bulge a barrel on a Super Blackhawk? I guess a squib then a full power round behind it!? I would hate to try that stunt!

I don't actually know what was the cause of the bulge. However I don't think it was a squib the bulge would have been much worse if that were the case. I suspect some sort of lesser obstruction like mud, maybe a dirt daubers nest or possibly a build up of ice or snow while out hunting. When I got it there wasn't a rear sight because it was set up for a scope which indicates a hunting gun.

It never ceases to amaze me how easy it is to get a barrel obstruction when hunting/working in the fields. No matter how careful you are it can happen.

It appears you have the original cylinder base pin. The cylinder can be tightened up a bit with the Belt Mountain cylinder base pin. It is just a bit oversized from the factory pin. I have found that can improve accuracy in the revo. Sometimes you also need a stronger spring on the cylinder base pin lock. Wolff makes a good one.

I did this to a Ruger .44 magnum, KS411n, 10.5" silhouette model at Greenwood Gun Club, in Brazoria, Texas, during a silhouette match. First bullet stuck in barrel about 2" past forcing cone. Then, apparently suffering from acute brain failure, I let another one go. It split the barrel on top, blew the ejector housing into my gun carrier. My wife was spotting for me and got lots of gravel, etc., blown over her legs. A buddy of mine at the match offered to put a new barrel on it, but I thought maybe Ruger would do so. I took it to the gunshop in Austin, that I had bought it from, and the owner said "no problem, I'll send it to Ruger for you". He calls me two weeks later, Ruger is not gonna put a new barrel on it, period. Not only that, their not sending the gun BACK, either! He says they offered a new Super Blackhawk to me for what he would pay for it. Well, thats what I ended up doing, but I get a real head of steam built up when I hear all the glowing reports of Ruger's factory service.

Even though I don't know the cause of the bulge it wasn't catastrophic, it was only a few 100s of a inch but noticeable.
If it had been any worse I probably wouldn't have bought it even at the bargain basement price I did.

After taking years to decide myself to sell my 7 1/2''bbl SBHKyou make me rethink the whole shebang again.I guess I'll have to write another post thanking you for my keeping and modifying my .44!

If you didn't already have the tools necessary to crown the barrel the modification would cost about 500 to complete.

An alternative to cutting the barrel is sending the gun to Ruger and letting them fit a shorter barrel. It has been nearly 20 yrs. for me, but I had several .45 Colt NMBH's rebarreled from 7 1/2" to 5 1/2". It was much cheaper than having it cut, but that was 20 yrs. ago.

Your correct it would be cheaper to have Ruger do a barrel swap but I'm positive they wouldn't put the kind of front sight on like I did. All said a done the front sight alone was about 175.
My actual cost including the price of the gun is much less then it would cost to have the same work done by Bowen Custom Guns

Good move, many times SBH will run out of down travel in rear sight. The ability to install higher front takes care of that.

These fine guns lend themselves to customization. Here's mine--Power Custom internals and Keith #5 grip frame, charcoal blue and real case-hardening, Bowen rear sight, barrel-band front sight, Bisley hammer, etc.

There were several different heights and styles I could have used with the sight base, I like the green fiber the best and choose the shortest combo I could get which is only slightly higher then a normal sight.

Hey Andy , that front sight is cool. Please detail what it takes to attach.
It's making me look at some of my other BlackHawks with bad intent.
One of the joys of Rugers is nobody gets twisty panties if you modify one.
I too fell for a damaged 44m Blackhawk needing circumcision . Mine was a victim of a striped hole to hold on the ejector rod housing , repaired by welding ,,,, badly.
Due to damage I went full on Sheriff length and due to it being a fixed sight gun it got a dovetail front sight. It will get a better looking sight when I really settle on a height. Lightweight alloy gripframe makes it belligerent but easy to pack around.

As indicated in this photo there are three set screws in the top of the sight base one under the sight insert, one on the rear and the screw that holds the sight insert also acts a set screw.
I wasn't comfortable with just the screws so I added a special formulated two part epoxy made just for high strength metal.
I considered silver soldier but didn't want to discolor the metal.
Beyond that it was just cutting the barrel were it was needed, using a 90% cutting tool to true the muzzle and a 45% crowning tool to cut the recess.
Just make sure if your going to attempt to do this get a very good reading on the diameter of the barrel were the cut is made so you can order the right size sight base.

Beauty.
I had my 10.5 inch SBH cut down to the length of the ejector rod. Came out to 5.5 inches. Got a higher front sight from Ruger as I liked the 300 gr and over bullets in those days. Made for a perfect woods holster gun.
