LGS is advertising the above, R-1 in 40 S & W. Seems interesting as I have a decent stash of 40 ammo. Does anyone here have any experience with one of these? Priced under $600. Thanks all, Ken

I like 40sw and my edc has been a 40sw since '91 and I would love to have a reliable lw commander size 40sw . But I'm not buying a 40sw 1911 that weights into 41 ounce empty as I know I will not carry that lard butt and do not need another range gun . And its a Remington !!

I am not a fan of the .40 S&W, and own nothing in that caliber. But If I were, I'd be interested in that R1. Have some friends with R1s, and they like it.

Although I like the .40 S&W cartridge and currently carry a SW40VE for Self-Defense, I honestly can't grasp the appeal of a 1911 chambered in .40 S&W.
Honestly, the most notable advantages the .40 S&W has over .45 ACP is that it can be fit into smaller guns and you can get higher magazine capacity in double-stack magazines, with the 1911 platform those advantages are practically lost since obviously the gun is the same size and you might be able to squeeze one more round into the magazine.

Personally, when it comes to a 1911, I'd either stick with .45 ACP or buy one chambered in .38 Super. If I were going to get a .40cal 1911, then it would be a 10mm.

I picked up a Commander size Springfield Armory 1911-A1 in .40S&W at my LGS a few years ago and it is a joy to shoot. As hardluk1 commented, it is one heavy pup on your hip so EDC is a challenge and it is relegated to range duty.

I couldn't find any info on the web regarding the model so I contacted Springfield and found it to be limited production (1-2yr) model with very few sales. I doubt a LW frame would handle the punishment of .40S&W.

40 S&W pistols built on pistols designed for the 40, 10mm, or 45 ACP hold up very well. 40 S&W pistols built on platforms designed for 9x19 hold up well if the receiver is made of steel. The aluminum receivers seem to be the ones that wear out fastest, but that holds true for aluminum receiver pistols in larger calibers as well. Plastic receiver pistols also hold up well as the slide rails and impact surfaces are made of steel.

The R1s in 9mm and 40 are excellent guns. They had some minor issues when first released but have been upgraded and are G2G.

Thanks Jayfarmer for the reply. In Pa. gunshops are open by appointment only, and they are hard to get. When the Plague subsides and things get back to some semblance of "normal" I'll take a closer look.

Meanwhile, back in the land of common sense, everyone who isn't desperately seeking a tangible excuse to help justify their illogical hatred of the .40 S&W cartridge knows that only very early .40 S&W pistols which were just lazy conversions of 9mm pistols were ever known to break in short order, and the issue was quickly rectified by manufacturers gaining better understanding of the cartridge and subsequently engineering firearms specifically for the cartridge.

You'd have to be a complete lunatic with a warped perception of reality to believe that to this very day, any reputable firearms manufacturer would continue to produce pistols which weren't capable of holding up to a steady diet of ammunition which has been commercially available since 1990. But what else can you expect from someone who once had his carry permit temporarily revoked due to ranting in a video about gun control, then threatening to, "go out and start shooting people" if stricter gun control were to be implemented in his area?

Harry, I think the historical craze against 40 caliber is funny in hindsight and interject it every once in a while. If I survive Covid19 (I don't have it yet) you will likely see it again. It did have me concerned with buying 40 at first, but I eventually got better! I appreciate your support of 40 caliber. The Remington R-1 Forty Five ACP is a nice gun, the 40 should be too.God bless and stay safe.

I’m in the camp that says 1911’s should be .45 acp. Not because I’m a fan boy of either the gun or the cartridge. Rather because of magazine compatibility. I have a pile of 1911 magazines that all work in all my 1911’s. I’m not going to add in a few odd balls to mix up.

But if you really like the cartridge and want something different go for it.

The only way I’d buy a .40 caliber 1911 would be if I had unlimited access to free ammo.

I do have a standard R1 that is a great gun.

If I was to buy a 40sw 1911 it might be a spring EMP 40 4" as it has history but once again its a 37oz empty pistol . Fusion firearms will build you a 1911 steel frame and theres a number of double stacks 1911 designs in 40 but there match guns and wonder how well they would hold up to full house underwood type loads or just hot handloads .

We were burnt by cerberus capital management aka remington a few year back when my wife brought a R51 home and it took 7 months then to square up with use finally sending us a basic R1 to get rid of us and I let our LGS owner keep as a down payment on something else .

Okay, if it wasn't already clear, most of the posts that I made yesterday were either jokes or otherwise highly exaggerated because it was April Fool's Day.

While I'm not a fan of James Yeager and do feel that he has no idea what he's talking about, I was intentionally being more hyper about it for fun.

Oh, and I was unaware that the Remington R1 1911 in .40 S&W was a Limited Run, so in that case, it might be worth getting just because it's something different that you don't see everyday. So yeah, if you can afford and would like to own it, then go for it.

I have a RIA 10mm that I bought a 40 barrel. I like the 40 in a 1911. I'd like one in a commander size. It recoils a little less than a 45.

I also on Remington R1. It is a good shooting 1911
