Red face Would this bother you? Wood grip imperfect.

Just received new factory wood grip panels for my Beretta. Noticed one of the checkered areas is slightly imperfect, right above the medalian. This is a carry gun and I shoot if often.

Should I see about getting these replaced, or just forget about it?

I know, I’m a picky person.

It wouldn’t bother me but it sounds like it’ll drive you nuts.

Get it replaced.

On a carry gun, nah. I wouldn't worry about it. And I freely admit to being somewhat OCD about stuff.

Back in the 90s I bought a set of black micarta double-diamond checkered grips for my 1911. One of the diamonds was noticeably asymmetrical. It bothered me a bit, but the grips were in otherwise excellent shape. My 1911 was a range gun, not a pristine collectable, so I didn't worry about it. I'm pretty sure they're still in my closet at my parents' house.

Yeah, I'll agree with that. It wouldn't bother me, but you spent money on it and if it really does bother you, get them replaced.

The inletting around the medallion looks worse than the checkering.
Maybe get something completely different like smooth wood or horn.

Yes I would be bothered by it. The checking imperfection and lousy inletting, even for factory grips, looks very poor and not befitting to a Beretta. Let me guess, these grips are from Beretta USA?

For a carry gun, no big deal. You’ll probably beat them up more by regular use and handling.

Enjoy, and don’t worry.

Best wishes,

No, but then again, I like things that look as natural as possible without being unsightly, so age, wear, and imperfections tend to be endearing traits to me.

Trees in nature isn't perfect, but they're still beautiful, right? Those grips are made of wood that came from a tree, so why must the grip be flawless when compared to the sum of its parts? It's already been dressed up by being sculpted and varnished, so what's the harm in having a few dings and dents here and there?

Meh. No big deal on a carry gun.... if you shoot it often just wait until you start noticing wear!

For me, most of my guns are tools... and my carry guns are heavily used tools. I put countless rounds down range and most of my carry guns show it.

My only input here would be that given the extremely slight imperfection, the grips you get for returning these may be no better and may be a bit worse. Not sure what the packaging is on these, but it may be near impossible for someone at Beretta to even micro-QC 'em before getting them to you.
Short story - I'd keep 'em, order another pair and keep the better of the two, returning the other.

This is a good reminder, that you get what you pay for. For $50 or 60 you cannot expect handcut checkering or even great pressed checkering and nice wood grain. That is the reason why I have Nill grips on the guns that I care for. Now, in that price range, I do expect a flawless product.

On my carry gun, however, no wood grips would fit and neither do I care about looks.

In the long run, won't make a bit of difference....next owner probably wont care either, but if it bothers you, you own it now, change it!

On a carry gun I wouldn't even change the original grips to begin with.

But since you changed them, you'll get dings, scratches and so forth...

Edit. What it really matters. Are you any good with it?

The sooner you learn to roll with slight imperfections with production grips, the better you’ll sleep. The flaw you found with your grips wouldn’t bother me in the least.

1776 Do you really need to ask about your minor wood grip issue ?

IF that's a bur shave it off or send it back . Other wise its just a tool to be used .

I guessing your OCD ?

If it bothers "you" .................................fix it! But keep in mind they are $49 grips....... you could go Beretta Deluxe Walnut for $149!!!

That said all my Beretta wood grips are in a box...... except for the older bright blue S models that are safe queens.

Carry guns are all G-10 Thin grips...... VZ grips, Wilson Combat or LTT..... but all made by VZ.

FWIW, I have smallish hands and I put VZ/LTT Ultra-Thin grips on my 92, and it was a significant improvement over the factory grips.

That little white mark at 12 o'clock?
That looks like some of the spray-on stain&finish, probably an all in one process,,has chipped off.

I'd touch it up and move on.
..and if that bothers you I'd remove the drip of finish @ 8 oclock on the edge of the medallion too.

But you are the one that spent the cash,,not me.
So it's your call. Send them back for exchange or refund if that will satisfy yourself.
Small things can sometimes be a big issue and have to be resolved one way or another.

A replacement set might have some flaws in them too that you're not happy with.
They are just machine made, machine checkered and automated spray finished.
Not a lot of eyeball QC so short of some glaring issues, they get packaged.

Good luck working it out.
Nice looking Pistol.

That's what I always told my ex-wife. Not smart, I suppose . . .

A firearm with dings and imperfections doesn't bother me in the least. I'd shoot it and enjoy it. Nothing stays perfect forever and your gun just has a bit of a head start. I have a Gold Cup with a ding in the slide that Colt missed and blued over. It shoots great and does what I want. Another example is the Ruger 44 Special Bisley I bought from Cabela's a few years ago. Got a great price. Seemed too good to be true. The guy said it was a factory second. Huh what? Never heard about that before. From Ruger? We looked it over carefully and found the cosmetic defect. No biggie and I got a crazy good price.

Hogue use to have a whole section of it's website with factory seconds...... great prices for carry grips and often I couldn't even find the "defect"

I don't see it either ... but I don't have a magnifying glass .

Would it bother me ? Not really , grips and carry guns get beat up . But a call to factory and being nice might get you another set.
Keep the "perfect" grips for back up and carry the slightly defective ones ...cause you know they gonna get beat up .

Something my Grandfather told me ..." Ain't nothing in this world perfect ... just get on with life ."

Until someone mentioned that little white thing at 12 o'clock I didn't notice anything. I used to be like that. Look at anything long and hard enough and you'll find some imperfection. Used to drive me crazy. It's like the first ding in your new car. After you get over that everything's good.

Wouldn’t bother me and I can be somewhat of a perfectionist!
I must admit, that’s a pretty sharp looking Beretta! Almost forgot to mention that!
My latest grips from Altamont, notice no Beretta emblem, didn’t need it there....

Thanks for all the opinions. I'm going to keep these, and use and carry the gun as I always do. At some point I might order another pair, and if they are better, put them on the gun. I'll then have a back up pair of panels.

Good points are raised here; especially the possibility of getting a pair that are even worse than these.

Cosmetic issues are always in the eye of the beer holder.

I would probably not have noticed an issue initially. But after you’ve noticed one, and thought about it enough to post about it, and read 30 opinions, I predict it’ll be hard to un-notice the imperfection ever again for as long as you have those grips on the gun.

Sooner or later, you’ll have different grips on the gun

I would have been too embarrassed to complain about those grip panels, unless there's something I'm not seeing.

I can't see it. But if I had a lot of money in them, I might beef.

If you intend on really carrying it - I would not bother replacing them as they will get dented, nicked and worn in short order. Only the first one hurts - lol!

When I carried a Model 60 I had to refinish or replace grips every so often. Not that I abused my guns, but they do get dinged, banged and marred once in a while.

When I would refinish wooden grips I'd use 100% pure Tung Oil rather than a high gloss Factory type finish - that way I could just re-oil them every once in a while and the would look good again.
