Default Ruger has good customer service: GP100 came back like a custom gun

Before this pandemic happened my LGS had a new Blued GP100. I wanted it, but the bluing had some staining from the factory.

The owner of the store gave me an offer of the tag price for out the door, so I bought it. The b/c gap was tight, and it just about rubbed on some chambers.

Finally got to sending it back to Ruger. UPS picked it up on a Friday, and it was on my doorstep exactly Friday two weeks later.

They replaced the barrel and re blued the entire pistol. BC gap is now a consistent .004. They then shot it from a bench rest at 15 yards and provided the test target.

This revolver is now what it should be.

When I sent my 2020 Colt Python back to Ruger for several reasons, one of which was a non-existent B/C gap, they totally ignored it and after 2 months sent the gun back only fixing one issue (a dinged crown) with no paperwork or anything.

Colt will never again get my business. They DO NOT CARE about their customers, not anymore.

Ruger is the better company.

And Ruger will repair your gun as long as you own it. I sent my 40-year old Standard back to have them replace a loose ejector. They did that, and installed a new extractor for good measure, all at no charge. Turnaround time was a little over a week. S&W has pretty good customer service, but Ruger has the best customer service of any company I have ever dealt with.

I had the same excellent service on my 5" blued GP100, loose wood handles and a couple blemishes. Received it back in 7 days, all good. I got lucky with the 6" I just bought; no problems besides user errors! My question, though, is who's asleep at the wheel in the QC Dept? I need to buy a new S&W and see how that works out for me! (Now if PA Gov. Wolf would open up the ranges in Western PA....)

You sent your brand new Colt Python to Ruger? Well, that might be a problem!

I know what you meant to type and it's sad that Colt's premium revolver went to market with so many problems. As for Ruger's customer service? I haven't a clue. I have a MK II Government Target pistol and GP-100 revolver, neither have required anything beyond routine cleaning. I will say that my GP-100 handles any ammo, including handloads, that I have thrown at it and with accuracy that is amazing.

That’s the truth. Years ago I purchased a used Alaskan in 454. The endshake was so excessive the cylinder touched the barrel shank. I sent it, telling them I wasn’t the original owner. They had it fixed in a week, no charge.

My S&w m69 needed the barrel sleeve turned. It took several months. But they made it right.

When I buy a revolver new, I assume I’ll need to send it in for adjustment. Just a reality these days.

The GP100 is as tough as a tank. Sadly, they no longer make a half shroud barrel. If I ever want another one, guess I will have to get a Redhawk.

There Match Champion has a half lug, slab side barrel with wood stocks. You might like it.

Default Ruger customer service

In 2017 I bought a new Ruger GP 100 in 44 spl. There was an issue with the front sight as evidenced in the photo. I contacted Ruger, they sent me a RMA. I shipped the revolver on a Friday, two weeks later The revolver was delivered to me. New barrel, normal sight configuration. Was quite satisfied with their service.

You mean it is now the way it should have been to start with. I wish they'd all quit shipping defective guns.

I've purchased a lot of revolvers, many new, over the years. I want guns that are built correctly (barrel centered inside frame, barrel clocked to 12, good timing, good carry-up, reasonably tight lockup, b/c gap .004-.006, forcing cone cut to the correct angle, endshake within spec, etc.

I have not purchased a revolver that meets all of the above conditions in a very long time.

Whenever I buy a new revolver, I assume that it will need at least one trip back to the factory.

It's a sad reality.

Ruger does have pretty good and quick CS BUT over the years I have bought 4 new rugers . 3 went home soon after buying them for some TLC . One was a ruger first years stainless steel 77 mkii that never shot well even after a trip home but I think that's was when ruger had sub contract barrels . Any how its a full custom build for the last 22 years with a kreiger barrel and timney trigger with aftermarket barrel .

I just bought a American ranch rifle for a grandson for a birthday gift . Its a 5.56 cartridge with AR based mags . It would barely chamber a round taking way to much force to do so but Ruger CS says to go shoot it ? I did so safely and after calling CS again it was sent home on there dime with a t my house pickup the next morning along with fired federal 5.56 brass .
Came back 8 days later re chambered and well polished chamber also nicely lapped forcing cone and barrel and was test fired with several makes and bullet weights . Its now a smooth functioning and accurate rifle . Typically fine service but wished it was not needed so darn often .

Ruger's website shows four Lipsey's Distributor Exclusive GP100s in .327 mag, .357 mag, .44 special and 10mm. They all have half shroud barrels.

Not quite true regarding the half shroud.

Besides the Match Champion, there is or was
a run of 5-inch barreled .357s, some .327s,
.44 Specials and 10mm.

I believe, besides perhaps some gun stores,
some still exist on internet sites.

Geez. That's been my experience as well with the new revolvers I've bought.

Shouldn't be like that but it is.

Now I admit I'm a picky *** with my guns, but it's like they've made the calculation that most people don't shoot their revolvers much or don't have very expectations.

Yes, the 2nd Gp100 I recently bought is the Lipsey's exclusive in .327FM. That's the one I had to return because the wooden handles were loose. I just wish I could shoot it; PGH doesn't think kindly of shooting in the city! Maybe the ranges will open back up this week. But, it's a little lighter than the stainless 6". Nicer-looking, too.

A friend of mine inherited his father’s Security Six when his Dad died. His dad was the original owner of the gun and fired at least 20,000 rounds through it, most of them .357 since he was a hand loader. Matter of fact, that was the first .357 I fired. 30 year old gun with heavy use and it was loose. He called Ruger and they said send it in.

2 weeks later it’s back. Looking brand new. Tight as a drum and factory re-blued. No charge. Not even shipping. They no longer support Six series guns but would do the same for a well used GP I’m sure.

I just got a used GP100 in 6”. Made in 1990. Tight as a drum but I’m working on loosening it up! If the day ever comes I do I’m sure Ruger will make it right.

Best service in the business.
