Building a Rifle - NOT an AR-15
I just started building another rifle. This one is a 4 bore English rifle. I am doing it as a series of half hour You Tube videos that will come out every weekend for the next several months. This one is an old time monster of a gun. Maybe some of you will enjoy it. Here is the first in the series.

Wow a 99 caliber look foward to the upcoming videos. How bad is the recoil on something like that. I know the weight will help, but thats a lot of lead, and powder...

4 bore?
Sounds like you really like your shoulder doctor!
Good luck! Sounds like fun as long as I don't have to shoot it!

Perhaps 40 years ago someone shot a "4 bore" at our old range. I didn't get to see it but I recovered several slugs from the butts. The one in the photos was the least deformed. (I've shown it next to a 45-70-500 reload for size comparison). Its hollow-base sort of Mini ball style. The top band measures right at 1 inch and it weighs 1898 grains. That's some chunk of lead to be lobbing downrange!

Wow. A three ounce round ball at 1600 fps. Recoil personified.

A 4 bore is not a rifle...
It's Field Artillery with out the wheels !
If I remember correctly even W. D. M. Bell thought the 4 bore was a bit much... said shooting it gave him a terrible headache !
Good luck with your project , I'm sure the build will turn out fine ,
I do want to see the last in the series ...where you shoot that bad boy !!!

If the velocity numbers that I have seen are correct, the recoil would be about 320 to 380 ft/pounds with a 550 grain powder charge. Depends on how heavy the rifle turns out to be. Guessing it will finish off at about 17 to 20 pounds.

I believe a 4 bore is 4 round balls to the pound. Depending on if that is a Troy Pound or a Standard pound a round ball would be 3.84 or 4 standard ounces. (The Brits used Troy in gun most measurements. A Troy ounce weighs 480 grains and there are 14 to the Troy pound. Standard is 437 grains to the ounce and as every American was taught in elementary school there are 16 to the Standard pound.) At 1600 fps is roughly 10,250 foot pounds of muzzle energy! Now imagine Selous using "Baby", his single shot 2 bore!
