Default Puukko - a different kind of knife

The Hawaiian koa on this knife is beautiful - the photo just doesnt' capture it. OAL 8.25" spring steel with koa, micarta and brass.

Sweet. I like the Puuko design a lot and bought this one many years ago.

That is a nice one! These knives certainly have a place and they have been around a long time! I really like the sheath. I think the next one I do will have a stacked birch bark handle.

Simple, yet elegant.

The Japanese word "shibumi" comes to mind.

Koa is a native wood from Hawaii, which sands and finishes very well.
There are several makers, Helle knives comes to mind and they make beautiful stuff.

FWIW, koa has also been used in some acoustic guitar tops instead of spruce or cedar.

Koa in Hawaiian means "warrior". Which is why the hotel used solely by military personnel on Waikiki is called the Hale Koa - House of Warriors.

The puuku is a Finnish design, as I recall. I had a gorgeous one, in a wood sheath, that came from Finland, and a miniature one, maybe two inches long, that also came from Finland. Up in smoke in 2018, sadly.

I had a number of koa wood carvings from my Navy trips to Hawaii, none of which survived the fire. They are very popular tourist souvenirs.

Nice historic facts! Sorry for your loss.
Koa is getting expensive and is highly sought after by many craft trades.
I also understand that vintage Puukko’s are collectible. Knife history is truly interesting.

I believe this is one of the originals. I've had it since 1966. I have the sheath around here somewhere.
