Anyone know what number they are up to on the lottery? I sent my application in on the first day it opened up and got number 16,992 (kind of the same luck I have buying lottery tickets). Last I saw a few months ago they were up around 13,000.

A guy on the CMP facebook page just got his service grade. He was 13005.

They shut down all operations for a while thanks to the bug. Looks like they are back at it now.

Reading the tea leaves at the CMP forum leads me to believe the second batch was also 8,000 guns. I think the RNGs started at 1000 so between that and the folks that have passed when they got the call I bet you’ll get one.

Compared to today's wonder pistols, the M1911 and M1911-A1 pistols do appear to be lacking. But, I find the small sights to allow for better precision shooting. The caliber is not, in my opinion, a detriment as the 45 ACP is a long proven handgun caliber. Are they as tight as a bullseye match pistol? No, they rattle when shaken, but they also tend to continue functioning when crudded up with a half a pound of GSR, dirt, and mud. The trigger is a dedicated single action, so no transition from DA to SA and no long, mushy, crunchy, no idea exactly when it will release the striker trigger pull. These are very functional and well tested handguns.

If the one I have could talk and relate it’s history.... Remington Rand 1943... ETO... Normandy??? PTO IWO Jima?? Korea...Frozen Chosin??? Vietnam... Khe Shan..Hue City??? Iraq...Fallujah? Or National Guard Duty it’s whole life... I know having 8 flying ashtrays made me feel safe.. and does today... my 10 year old grandson has called dibs on ole slabsides!

By way of update, got a call from CMP yesterday. I chose the field grade over service grade ‘cause I wanted one with a little character. They hit my credit card this morning and shipped today as well. I should get it tomorrow. My number was 15093. By the way, the lady I spoke with said they were still working on the original 8000 pistols and that there was no second batch as I’ve heard. Seems a lot of people moved and could not be located or couldn’t pass the background or screwed up their application or just didn’t want one any more.

I don't have an incredible collection of "common" wow guns, most are only interesting to S&W nuts. But everyone wants to shoot the 1944 Remington-Rand. It's American history and a lot more approachable than an M1 Garand or M1903.

I shot my Service Grade CMP 1911 for the second time since I got it last year a few weeks ago. I didn’t buy it to be a shooter. I shoot it once a year or so. What makes these so special is every one of these was issued to an American GI. Mine was made in 1942. WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and everywhere in between, it’s hung on the hip of an American GI. For me, paying a few hundred more for this than some knockoff made in the Philippines or Brazil isn’t even a question.

As for the cost, they’ll never drop in value, unlike virtually every modern gun you buy the second you sign the 4473 and walk out of the gun shop. I was offered $1500 cash for mine when I picked it up at my FFL. I declined. I would have forgotten what I did with the $450 profit I made by selling it by now.

It’s a piece of history. My son will have mine one day.

It does look like the pace picked up recently. Not long ago they were in the mid 13,000 range. I was mid 14,000 and got this SG Ithaca about 3 weeks ago.

You will be happy with what you get, the CMP does a great job.

Maybe you got the one my dad had at the Battle of The Bulge or maybe the one I sometimes carried in Vietnam.

I know. Or maybe it never left the states and was used to qualify men about to go to war. Either way it spent 30 years banging around on a soldier’s hip. I’ll take that over a tricked outta Kimber.

Only thing I wish is the parkerizing was a bit darker. Some ordered Field Grades but I wanted the best functioning weapon. Mine was refurbed and put back into storage in 1976, waiting to be put back into action. That never happened so I now own it. Mine is very tight. It doesn’t rattle. But I wish it was darker. But not gonna change anything. Rather than detract from the guns history, the park is part of its history.

Just the other day, I was making an inventory of my currently owned firearms. Made a spreadsheet with info, including purchase date and price. I bought my Service Grade Springfield Garand from the CMP 4 years ago for $650. 3 years ago my HRA was $725. They’re not even in stock anymore at the CMP so I have no idea what they’re going for, but gunbroker CMP service grades are going for over a grand. The prices of these GI weapons is never gonna go down. 20 years ago SKS rifles were $75 a pop.

I look at my modern M&P plastic guns and how they don’t hold their value and then I look at my 1911 and there’s just no contest. If they let me buy another I probably would.

Just an update, my Buddy, number 14,819 got the call today, picked a Service Grade and they had that in stock.

Obviously CMP is still moving through the list.

Not true, mine is in my safe, where it will stay. I have many friends that applied and got one, not one of those has sold to my knowledge.

Not arguing that many will be sold, but equally as many understand what true pieces of history they are.

Mine too. The 1911 and the M1’s will be the last to go. Any of them are just as capable today as when they were made 75 years ago. I have an AR and some more modern guns and I like them, but they don’t give me the same feeling.

Mine arrived today. Oddly, it’s a field grade but looks like a service grade. Frame is Rem Rand, the slide is a Colt “hard slide” and the barrel is a Colt replacement too. Almost like a new gun! Fit is good, it should run fine. I’m camped at Devil’s Tower tonight so not really set up for good photos, but here’s a look at it. Very pleased!

This is a serious question. Is there any way to obtain the history of the gun like as stated above?

Several guys on the CMP forum did Freedom of Information Act requests, but the information provided didn’t go back very far - seems like all of it was post-Vietnam. I think any documentation beyond that is lost to time.

The letters did reveal many were transferred from Army storage to the CMP in September of 2019, well after they started shipping them to buyers. There was definitely a second batch, which CMP is trying to downplay.

Short answer, no.

I had #126xx something, don't remember all of it. I received mine about 2 weeks ago when they were shipping in the 14K numbers. They bounced me out when they had to evacuate the office in March. Evidently, they ran my info in NICS and had to leave before they got the proceed. They told me I missed out because of that but were kind enough to run it again.

I asked about the availability of pistols and they wouldn't comment on that other than they weren't allowed to say. They did tell me they still had plenty and I was nowhere near missing out. That was at 14500 being served.

Those are some great folks there running that program and they did right by me. The pistol I received was RR with a Colt slide shipped Jan 1944. Fresh repark and in good condition. My dealer uses GB a lot and said I shouldn't sell it because they seem to be climbing in value even tho CMP is still shipping them. I'm not selling it anyway.

I'm thinking when this batch is done it's over. If they had plans to do anymore they would be accepting apps, which they aren't.

I'm hoping everyone who wants one gets one because for sure these are collectible.

Mine arrived with a post war commercial slide and heavily blasted before refinish. It's a neat gun but didn't do anything for me so I sold it.

If the CMP finds out you sold it you're on they're SL. Banned from future purchases forever or something like that. Don't know that they have any authority in the matter other than that.

They don't like the idea that one of their pistols could be used in a crime, media gets the story, and bingo, they're out of the USGI pistol business. Congress and Army will shut it down pronto.

$1150 iirc. I just wanted out of it and wasn't trying to make money. I had to pay background check in my state and of course the transfer fees.

They aren't much to look at, that's for sure. In 5 years they will be worth 2x what you paid for it. That will be a decent return on your money. I'm just putting mine in the back of my safe and watching the collectors bid those up. Don't need a shooter as I already have three.

I got my call today from the CMP (you could have knocked me over with a feather). My random number was 15772. I picked a service grade (the best grade they have) for $1050 shipped.

Fingers crossed that I get a nice one.

And here's the crazy part: they called me early this afternoon to let me know that my number had come up. After we worked through the formalities on the phone, they said that they would reach out to my FFL just to make sure he was still able to receive the gun. Assuming that all of this checked out, that my gun would be shipped in three to four weeks, or less.

Well, about an hour ago I got notice that my gun shipped. And since they ship all of them Fedex overnight, it appears that my gun will be at my FFL sometime tomorrow.

This has all been an unexpected and most pleasant surprise, and I'm sure that whatever is in the box will be a delight to own and shoot.

So I'm absolutely astonished.

The magical phone call from Aniston, AL came in at 11:46 AM CST yesterday. And almost exactly 24 hours later I picked up my shiny (Parkerized shiny) new 1911A1 from my local FFL. If that isn't service, I don't know what is.

As expected, the gun is a mixmaster with an Ithica slide and a Remington Rand receiver. Serial number is 949182, and it bears the FJA inspector mark, which seems par for the course for these guns. The gun appears to have been reworked at the Anniston Army Depot in May of 1986, and from the looks of it it hasn't been touched since then.

All it needed was a few drops of oil to loosen it up. A few hundred rounds through it should sort it out nicely.

I can't think of a single thing to complain about in the entire process, and it's really cool to own a piece of WW2 history like this. I've never been a world war collector, but this gun is definitely a keeper.

Helps more that according to the label on my pistol case, FedEx charged CMP around $14 to overnight from Alabama to Arizona.
Probably helps pricing to ship a truckload or two with FedEx everyday.

Well believe it or not I got the call today. Will probably have the gun early next week. Went with field grade, didn't want a parkerized gun. Hoping for one with some character. Will post photos when gun in hand.

Sorry my life is short timing and I can’t wait for one I purchased a new auto Ordnance us army 1911a1 for $389. I was torn between the new AO and the SA hi mil spec for $424 at the time. I bought both.

Our parents taxes paid for these once so there making money on us. We’re paying twice for them.

There’s no comparison between a cheap modern 1911 and an authentic WW2 (or WW1) artifact. Just like there’s no comparison between a brand new Model 10 and a WW1-era M&P.

Given the average price of WW2 1911’s, I had no problem with the CMP pricing. And I know I’ll get my money back and then some if I ever sell it.

The sour grapes over these great pistols always amuses me.

For less than the cost of a decent dishwasher I have a legitimate USGI 1911A1 directly from the miltary. The last GI one I bought on the open market was 2 dishwashers.

The paperwork took two hours, including trips to get a form notarized and to mail it off. Then there was the fun of waiting for my lotto number (10809) and the anticipation as I crept closer to THE CALL.

Then I saw “CMP” on my caller ID. 24 hours later it was in my hand.

Would a knock-off also put holes in a target? Yup. Would I get the same feeling doing it as I do with a gun that has been riding along with a GI since 1944? Oh hell no.

OP - Its been a long wait for you. I hope you get a doozy.
