Default Won a Manurhin mr73

Won this gun and was happy to get it. A few Years ago found a surplus 4” Target and had it reblued to look good. Figured fixing it up would keep me from buying an expensive one later, wrong!! Just added a 6”, even has the box and it says Mullhouse on it. Hopefully it’s one of the early ones. The Nill grips need to be sanded a little to get rid of a few sharp edges. Will shoot it Tuesday morning at the old guy shoot. May sell the 4” soon, Larry

Looking at the gun, I am sure that it is an import from Germany where it was used for centerfire sports pistol competition. Unfortunately the Nills are not adjustable and original Manurhin grips are not easy to come by. Nill offers target grips for the MR73 and I would strive to replace the current match grips with grips that would be used in practical pistol shooting.
I have an early Mulhouse MR73 with a 5 1/4 inch barrel and find that it is a well balanced gun with the wooden standard Manurhin grips.

Glad you chimed in Andy. There is actually no import marks on it, it was advertised as such and I went over it looking in all of the obvious places. Not sure when it would have come into the country. Actually like 5” guns and would have preferred one but the 6” is OK. Will trade the grips off the 4” soon to see the difference between both. I shoot double action and I the grips on it are more for single action. Larry

Larry,

I also had a four inch MR73 but preferred the 5 1/4 inch version. At my age, I need the longer sight radius. Nill is offering several grips for the MR73, which is frequently seen at matches in Germany.
The grips in between my four inch model and the 5 1/4 inch model were not interchangeable, since the 4" used a smaller frame. I hope that your interchange but just in case, the link to Nills is below.

Very nice catch, sir! I don't know a thing about Manhurins, but I do know that people (in the past) could do a private import on an ATF Form 6. No importers markings were required when I did it many years ago. I assume - knowing what that spells - that active duty military and civilians can still bring firearms out of Germany. That said, I left GER a few years ago and things may have changed. Either way - that's a great looking revolver.

Thanks for all the nice comments. Andy, the grips did transfer but I decided to stay with the Nills. Like the way they fit my hands and get some support on the top and bottom from the shape of the wood. Removed a little wood and sharp edges so my hand felt natural and not squashed in areas.

Gonna shoot it tomorrow morning off the bench first, then off hand. Will give a range report tomorrow. May see if the ransom rest inserts for a S&W K frame will fit the MR73. Would be a good test medium for it. Larry

Larry,

those Nill match grips are excellent for single handed shooting and are expensive, the adjustable ones are even better, yet cost a small fortune. Aren't you already intrigued by the smoothness of the MR73? It is very pleasant to just play with the MR73 and feel how smooth the cylinder opens and closes and how smooth the action works.

Well, the ransom rest grip inserts for a K & N frame didn’t fit. The N frame inserts were close, the MR73’s grip frame has is rounded more in the back. So sand bags and a chair were the only way to eliminate my inability to shoot good. The Quarter in the pics is about 1” in diameter. There is a group from the 14-6 just purchased from Lee Barner also. Happy with the results, tried my best to get the same sight picture. Distance is 50ft indoors, Larry
