Default got me a M1A

Stopped off at a LGS I hit on occasion. Its a good shop but much farther from my house than a few other also good shops. Just went to look around and possibly get some more ammo.

Saw a brand new M1A Scout on the wall and being this is the peoples republic of NY it has to pass "The Rules" It was OK as it had a 10 round mag and no flash hider.

Asked the clerk to get me the rifle and even thought it did not have the trigger lock on it as he knows me just handed me the gun. Clerk told me that rifle and its twin brother (which sold a 1/2 hour before) just arrived at the store a few hours ago!

Long story short I purchased it, even got a decent discount off the MSRP. The thing I really noticed was I have heard stories of now long it took many people to get the Fed check done. It took about 3 minutes, very pleased.

Bad news no extra mags in stock nor .308 ammo. Stopped off at my sons house on the way home and borrowed some of his .308 ammo

Its now Sat Morning and the club ranges will be crowded, guess I will wait till next week and best bet have the range to myself. I cannot use my own range as the neighbors are up till after the July 4 holiday is over. (500' rule then comes into play)

Any on here that know more about this rifle please feel free to share you knowledge with me.

The M1A is my preferred battle rifle. I currently have 4. An old Federal Ordnance M14A standard size and 3 Springfields. A National match, a Socom 16 and a Scout/Squad.
To me the Scout/Squad is the perfect size for these rifles. Being a little shorter and lighter, its easier and quicker to handle than the standard size. But it still has enough barrel to make full use of its cartridge.
If the SHTF tomorrow, the Scout/Squad would be in my hands.
I think you've made an excellent choice.

Nice Picture, Thanks for sharing. My gun is just a wood stock plain Jane.

Just measured a cleaning rod to see what barrel I have. As mine is NYS compliant it has no muzzle device. It measured out to 18 1/8, 18 for the sake of argument.

No pics, but I have the standard 22” M1A Loaded. Great guns, you’ll have fun.
I was going to get the Socom16 also, but never did, and probably won’t now. That one is LOUD.

OK with the detachable mag because no evil features?

Nice find. Buddy of mine just bought a SOCOM version, and it is a blast to shoot, literally.. I think yours with the 18 inch barrel is a better choice for a cartridge like the .308. My standard M1-a is one of my favorite rifles. They can be accurate with the right load. Avoid heavy bullet and max loads in these guns, as it is hard on the operating rod. Mine is at its best with 150 / 168 grain bullets at middle of the road velocities. 4895, or powders in that burn rate work well in these guns. M-80 ball ammo is usually informal target shooting accurate, but if you don't reload, PPU 168 grain match ammo is a real step up in accuracy (at least in the two I owned), and not much more in price than military ball.

When you buy more magazines, take a look at Checkmate Industries website. They are a lot cheaper than Springfield's mags, and are the same thing - Checkmate makes Springfield's mags. If you mount a scope, read reviews first. A lot of mounts don't seem to work well. I use the "SWAN" mount on mine, and it has held up fine. It is US Military contract issue. Avoid a lot of repeated removals from the stock, as these rifles depend on tight bedding for best accuracy.

We have a sort of 1 from column A and 1 from column B that will mess things up. Yes good because of the muzzle device gone, they in their generosity will let you have a detachable mag as long as its limited to 10 rounds. Know they would heavily frown on M14 20s. A pistol grip, bayonet lug is others that upsets NY.

I have been married 50 years I can tune anything out.

Well my protection of choice is a Walker electronic. At our one club the range has a nice roof and the Walkers seem to do all right. Always have the option of using inserts if needed.

I got a full size Standard "Loaded", one a few months ago, I'm getting pretty good with it. The longest shot on my property is 200 yards, I'm confident I can hit most targets within that range. Been slaying some bowling pins and steel targets.

My favorite targets are two 13" diameter rounds my nephew made for me of 1/2" AR500 steel. They are placed on a pallet at 200 yards, hit them and knock them down. They are the same size as the aiming black of a 200 yard NRA High Power Rifle Target....

Default One Rifle to rule them all!

All
M1-A loaded, sights updated to NM2-A rear set. Some after market op rod and spring. Glass bedded. Shot very nicely with some Federal high dollar ammo.
Gun still works fine, the eyes got old. Would need optics to use at any distance now.

I have one of the early SOCOMs. Mine is wearing a Scout scope. Need to get it out and shoot it some.

I have the M1A NM and love it.
Flash hider and bayonet lug.
Often considered the Scout to make a pair.
Enjoy!

The M1A, as most of you know, is a fabulous rifle. A match conditioned rifle is worth the cost and service rifle accuracy is truly realized.

My match conditioned M1A helped me to achieve my Master classification in NRA High-power competition. A SoCom, Scout or Tanker model would make a very handy general purpose rifle and I have been tempted by offers of pre owned rifles.

They are loud but, with an 18" barrel, that is what you can expect. The .308/7.62 cartridge has a lot of advantages in that platform. They are a pleasure to shoot and inherently accurate.

Enjoy you new rifle!

I bought an M1A in 1990 and for years it sat unfired. I made a point of getting one with a fiberglass stock because that's what the Army trained me with (long funny story, actually; M-14 with the selector switch removed!).

Anyway, a few years ago I finally brought it out and took it to the range. Great fun. Then the fire in 2018 ruined the black fiberglass stock. It was one of a very few items in my safe that got any heat damage; lots of stuff got wet. It was near the front. Anyway, my good buddy and FFL put a mil-spec wooden stock on.

Ick.

It was heavier and was simply "not my gun" anymore. So I recently sold it.

I still think that the M-14/M1A is the finest battle rifle ever but I know lots of folks disagree.

Over the years I have become an AR fan. Lots of reasons. But I will miss that M1A.

Close friend of mine in TX bought one a few months ago. Full size I believe, not the scout. I haven’t had the chance to get down there and handle it myself yet, but he absolutely loves it. He’s been punishing hogs with it on his hunting piece in north central TX. Iron sights.

PS - I was surprised how nice the wood was, from the pics he shared. Tons of figuring.
