Default AMT auto-mag II

I’m looking at a nice used 6” 22mag , adj. sights 499.00 in excellent condition imo. I had one back in ‘87 or ‘88 when they first came out but sold it for a 6” m-48. Does anyone have and use an auto mag II yet and how accurate ?

Friend, I have two of them and have had/sold a few more! Buy that dang thing and if you don't like it, I'll take it. They can be a bit ammo finicky and they like to stay clean, otherwise, very accurate, very, very. If you do your part, pick the right load, this wonderful little auto will return the favor.

Caveat: don't give up on it after the first load you try! If it works great, you won the lottery, otherwise, snap up 4-5 different loads and work through 'em...........and keep it clean!

$499 is a good price. They can be a little finicky regarding ammo. They were originally issued with a note in the owners manual to only use Winchester Super-X 40 grain bullets, apparently the type of powder used had the optimum burn rate for the way the gun was engineered. Many different loads have been introduced in the 30+ years since the Automag II was introduced. What I have found is that most of the "Maxi-Mag" type loads with bullets around 30 grains or so do not function well. I have had next to zero malfunctions with current Super-X, Speer Gold Dot (if you can find them) and Fiocchi ammo, all 40 grain loadings. I think not only is the powder burn rate a factor but also the recoil impulse which might be why it doesn't like the 30 grain loadings.

There are copies of the manual available online, and spare mags are plentiful and not expensive. Heed the warnings about pulling the trigger while the gun is field stripped and the hammer is cocked, damage to the hammer strut will occur.

The chamber must be kept clean, it won't take much to clog up the tiny ports around the circumference. What I did was buy one of those tall, thin bottles of Capers at the grocery store. Threw out the Capers and washed the bottle thoroughly. Now I can stand the barrel up in the bottle, chamber end down, and pour enough Hoppes No. 9 down the barrel to submerge the chamber area. Let it soak for a few hours, then blow out the excess solvent.

Here is mine. It makes quite a visible fireball at an indoor range, lots of fun !

I owned one for a few years along with a AMT Hardballer 45 acp.
I liked everything about the Auto Mag II except the cost of 22 magnum ammo ... my Son in Law didn't have a problem with buying ammo ... he wasn't a reloader so he bought all his ammo and the 22 magnum ammo cost was no problem . The gun was an accurate shooter with it's ammo of choice .
I was a 45 acp fan , cast bullets and reloaded my ammo so I kept the AMT Hardballer . Of all the 1911's I've owned Colt (3) , Star(1) , S&W (1) ... the AMT is the most accurate and the one I still have .

At $499.00 that's a good price ... 25 years ago I paid $399.00 for mine !
I just checked with S-I-L ...He still has his Auto Mag II and is going to hang onto it ! His advice is to Buy It !
