Default Beretta M1951 9mm Do I want one?

Seem to be a bunch of used import Beretta M1951 9mm coming from Italy, most around $300. I have 2 of the .32acp Model 81 and really like them. I had one of them long before all the recent imports.
Considering the M1951 is the predecessor of the Model 92, is the grip as big as the 92? I have shot a 92 but the grip was too big(bulky) for my liking. Any comments welcome.

I had the Helwan version at one time. To answer your question, the magazine is a single stack, andit holds 8 - 9 rds. The profile of the grip is so much slimmer than the 92 series.
They´re wonderfully accurate. The only gripe I have is the low profile sights, and.I mean low.

Thanks! I figured the grip should be smaller.

I have an Israeli M1951 and the biggest issue will be finding factory magazines. The next issue is the locking block - it may be worn or cracked.

They're wonderful shooters, though!

I currently have a Taurus 92 and did have the Beretta 92 that I traded away. My former step daughter’s live-in companion had three of the Helwans. I shot one of his and despite the poor cosmetic looks. It was very comfortable in my hand with the slightly slimmer grip and was surprisingly accurate. It swallowed and digested a couple hundred rounds on that outing. Most his ammo was steel case. The outing was in the late 90’s. The b/f complained about the scarcity and price of extra mags. Don’t know what the situation is today but it might be something to consider.

If you like Berettas and history then by all means buy it. I've got a 1951, plain 92, 92s, 92FS compact, and 92FS...but then I sorta accumulate Berettas (also have 1935, Model 70, Model 81 Cheetah, Model 85F and 3 PX4s).

You won't be getting this for carry, there are much better carry guns; more for range use, fun, and I like having the progression of 9mm Berettas. Personally, I think they are very attractively priced. If I didn't have one already I'd be over them like a cold sweat.

Go for it. In a year they'll be selling for $450, just look at what happened to the Star BMs....lots and cheap and then not so many and a bunch more expensive.

I had one of the recent imports. It shot really well but as another poster mentioned the sights really limit them. The push button safety is interesting but the single action trigger is nice. Great option for a collectible or range gun.

Well, one of the sites also had the magazines so ordered the gun with 2 magazines. $325 shipped.

Funny thing, one place offers them as C&R eligible and most others don’t? They say they’re not old enough? Really? Plus on the ATF C&R page they are listed but Israeli contract? still the 1951 ?
So at this point I guess I’m not getting one with my C&R
Sometimes I wonder why I keep it because every time I go to use it I can’t

A few years ago CDI in KY had a bunch of 1951s that they imported and
sold as C&R eligible. They were said to be surplus Israeli contract guns.
Any gun at least fifty years old is C&R eligible so I guess that the mfg
date may vary quite a bit as to the Israeli guns or the current importer
may not even know and is just playing it safe. I bought three of them
from CDI on my C&R license and really like them. My hands are a bit
small and the slim grip is very comfortable.

Not to hijack the thread, but I sure do wish CDI were still around. They were a great company to do business with...but all sorts of tragedy befell the owner...and then the fire that burned the business to the ground.

There is sort of a replacement company that is of similar quality, but I was on their web site the other day and their inventory was down considerably.

I had a cousin, now recently deceased, who spent over 30 years on the bench as a judge in Ohio. He always carried a 9mm Beretta 951 (which I assume is the same as or very similar to the 1951) under his robe, and often outside the courtroom. I don't believe he ever needed to use it, but he practiced with it frequently on the local Sheriff's range, and I went with him several times. As I remember, he really wasn't much of a gun guy, and had no other guns but that Beretta.

You know what they say about that...

Beware the man with one gun. He probably really knows how to use it...

Apparently Robertson's took the time to date their pistols as they are selling them as C&R. Classic just called them all modern to avoid sorting thru them. Robertson's is also selling the TripleK mags at a great price. The 1951 and 3 mags I just got from Robertson's are very nice and runs like a top.

Where else besides Robertsons would a guy look to purchase on with the three mags? I am now interested, thanks to the OP's post.

What is this Robertson’s? The only thing that comes up is a trading post site and shows no guns?

I considered getting one of these myself, but ultimately decided against it after a rather negative experience I recently had ordering a Romanian MilSurp Tokarev TTC online.
Besides, as much as I like the Beretta 92, it's single-stack, single action predecessor doesn't interest me at all. I'd rather wait for another wave of police trade-in 92s than spend it on a M1951.

The best thing is that as post WWII Italian Military pistols they are built sturdy in anticipation of being dropped.

No, they absolutely don´t.
But they have a tendency to make their adversaries do that exact thing! LOL

Israelis?
He said Italians, not Israelis, because these are Italian military/police surplus pistols.
However, I think he was confusing the Italian military with the French military

IN WWII, after Dunkirk, the French military fought a losing battle with some elan. Before Dunkirk, abandoned French equipment slowed the Germans more than the French military. As a matter of fact, they gave the Italians who attacked a small holding force along the south coast a bloody nose. The Italian Army in North Africa was generally abysmal. Italians were only too glad to go into captivity en masse, not that I blame them. Italians would yell their GI captors;"Don't feel sorry for me, I am going to America, you are going to Italy".The best thing they did for the Axis was to possess trucks at El Alamein for the Germans to steal and get away. A prewar estimate by the German general staff, was that if the Italians are our enemies, we can defeat them with two divisions, if they are our allies, we will need to prop them up with 12 divisions.

Thanks for the history lesson, I think

But you do realize that line in my post was a reference to an old, long-standing joke about the French military, right?

BC38, I am getting older and more and more do not pick up on everything, but yes, no doubt the French Army too was not what it been decades earlier. Have a pleasant holiday.

No worries. You're still plenty sharp man.
You obviously have a good memory and knowledge of history, and that has more real value than a silly joke anyway.
I know I learned something. I never knew the Italians were such unwilling participants and pushovers in WWII.
I'm not even sure which war gave the French army their poor reputation as a fighting force, just that I've seen a lot of joking references alluding to that.
Happy Independence day to you too!

A somewhat out of fashion design, but $300 for a steel frame 9MM seems a good value to me.

The 1951 was never produced with an aluminum frame. A few test guns
maybe but all production was steel frame I'm almost certain. I don't
have my reference book by J.B. Wood handy right now but I've read it
many times. All steel.

The 1951 sounds great. Palmetto State Armory, interstate champions of reliably slow reliable shipping, has them. They sold me a very very nice 92S (ordered june 14, delivered june 29th) if you decide to go for one of those.

Got my M1951, It is a 1976 so all steel. Good condition, shows light overall wear, one magazine has a little surface rust that will clean up. This is how it looked right out of the package.

Considering the M1951 is the predecessor of the Model 92, is the grip as big as the 92? I have shot a 92 but the grip was too big(bulky) for my liking. Any comments welcome.
Hey pawngal, did you ever get the Beretta 1951? I ordered one today. I just wondered if you got one? I'm gonna give it to my brother in law. Should I keep it or let him pay for it????

If your M1951 has an F prefix to the serial number then it has an alloy frame.
