Default After the Neighbor's Murder ... a Glock

I posted recently about my granddaughter's neighbor being shot in a hail of gunfire and falling dead on the lawn in front of her apartment.
After that scare, she wanted out ASAP and expedited the closing on her first house, and now she's setting herself up. Her LEO father took her shopping at his LGS for some essentials, and she got her first handgun.
I thought it interesting to see the permission slip she needed to own a pistol on Long Island NY.

That looks like possession only, not carry. Last I knew, it took months to get through the process and take delivery. Make sure she gets some good training.

Can't go wrong with a Glock 17 for home protection. Went back and read original post about the shooting - YIKES - way too close for comfort. Glad to hear she is moving very soon.

I have a card just like it....and yes, it's a sportsman's license, not a carry permit....and if you use it for SD at your home, you'll be arrested, as it is supposed to stay in your safe, unless you're on the way to the range. (though, as some say, better to be judged by twelve, than carried by six.)
Long Island pistoleros (make that Suffolk and Nassau county, as Queens and Brooklyn are part of NYC and a whole different scenario there) know to use a long gun...make that a shotgun, as discharging a rifle on LI is illegal outside of a range, if things go bad.

ps: I recognize that as my LGS. The greatest bunch of guys to deal with, and in this part of the world, an oasis of like minded folks to be found there.

There may be someone here with a more modern perspective on owning a handgun out on Long Island, but I lived in Long Beach, NY back in the late 80s-early 90s, when I worked for Pan Am. I actually applied for that carry permit as soon as I turned 21. I have never filled out so much paperwork in my life since. My landlord actually had to write a letter stating that it was ok that I would have a handgun in my apartment.
I worked with a gun shop, that I bought my first Randall knife from, to get through all the paperwork. They charged me for the assistance, but they guaranteed it wouldn't get kicked back for "clerical errors". I then had to make an appointment to go to the Nassau county sheriffs office to submit the folder full of paperwork and get my finger prints taken. I don't remember it actually taking that long of a wait, maybe a couple of weeks.
The biggest reason I wanted the permit, was that if I remember correctly, you couldn't even handle a gun in a shop if you didn't have a carry permit.
I remember getting my first handgun put on the permit after I bought it later that summer, a stainless steel Colt combat commander, and I still have it.
My supervisor at Pan Am took me shooting a couple of times at an indoor gun club range that was under a small plaza/strip mall up in Hempstead I believe. I later learned that my Dad had shot on the Republic bullseye pistol team at that range back in early 60s.(Republic built F-105s in Farmingdale)It's amazing what a small world it can be sometimes.

Default NY a Horror

After retiring from law enforcement, I had a carry permit for 25 years before moving out of New York state but my shooting buddies had to contend with civilian permits or licenses. The state made them jump through hoops and it was very easy to get a permit revoked.

The Uniondale county Municipal Range, Nassau County, Long Island, had signs posted that only the permit holder could hold and fire the gun. We were not allowed to try a friend's gun. I don't know if it was a range rule or their interpretation of a state law. This was a rule we had to break to assist someone in clearing a stoppage or in figuring out accuracy issues.

Just my (probably) overly cautious opinion, but I think that's a good thing from a personal security perspective, especially in the times we're living in now.

New Jersey is actually less restrictive. You need a permit to purchase each handgun, but once you buy it and take it home it is for all intents and purposes unregulated in your home and they cannot revoke your permit to own it.

Getting a carry permit is not possible

Default Permits are a pain here in S. Alabama

Took my wife to get another picture taken (every 5 yrs) Had to wait almost 30 mins. Expensive too $20. year or $100. for 5 yrs.
Really, can't imagine all the hassle you have to go through in some cities.
Used to have to have a letter from your Preacher and another reputable person to apply. Now you just renew online or show up when you need a new picture. We really are blessed.

Your right, it's a possession permission. Carry permission is near impossible for civilians there. I'm not sure of the details, but her father helped her go through some extensive process for the permission to buy a handgun a couple of years ago, but the neighbor's murder gave her the impetus to finally complete the process and own something. I think the actual purchase required going to NY state offices to get paperwork to present at the LGS.

As for training, I'm sure her father will make sure she's good to go. He and his friends have been taking her shooting for years, with handguns and long guns, and she's an enthusiastic hobby shooter and bird hunter, but until now always using others firearms.

Getting a carry permit is not possible
permits are easily revoked + firearms confiscated in NJ - felonies , some misdemeanors , domestic violence , domestic disputes , terroristic threats , red flag complaints by anyone , + etc. are just some of the reasons used - some alleged offensives do not require conviction only unproven charges to allow revocation + confiscation - common occurrence in this state -

Since we already drifted. In NYS, once you get about 50 miles north and west of NYC, carry permits are obtainable with a few hoops to jump through.

You’ll wait and wait some more, sometimes a few months, sometimes a year or more depending on the County. But you will get a permit to carry that will allow you to at minimum take a handgun out of the house for hunting, hiking, and all “ sporting purposes”.
These permits are really not meant for full time carry, but people do it. You may get your permit revoked by the issuing authority but it’s an administrative move, you will not be criminally charged.
If you are is possession of a magazine containing more than 10 rds all bets are off, especially in NYC or Long Island with their DA’s eager to prosecute.

Most “upstate” counties( Orange, Putnam and up, with a few exceptions) will allow full carry, as in on your body, with the only restriction being no carry in NYC. I lived in Putnam, we had 13,000+ carry permits in a population of 100,000. Good chance any able bodied person you encountered over 21 was armed with a handgun. The County was always in the top 3 safest in the state.

Long Island has beautiful beaches and great fishing, so there’s that.

That's why I loved Arizona , well one of the reasons . NO permit necessary to open / conceal carry . Texas still requires a permit . Regards Paul

While am glad for every new young gun owner, in this day in age posting your pic with gun may be ill advised. Even on a gun forum, especially in state she is located.

She didn't post her pic or gun, and besides that, she is wearing a face diaper, so she's good.

They keep adding guns to your permit until the one card gets full, then issue another card with additional guns.
I carried the main card, as required, with my info on there, ie name, address, employment info, photo, etc.

In addition I carried the card that had the handgun I was carrying, listed with make, model, caliber and serial number if it were on an additional card.
If stopped and checked, the officer may request to see if the gun you are carrying was on your permit. Or he may just be happy with seeing the permit.

I was stopped by the NYS Conservation police when exiting the woods while handgun hunting many years ago. The officer asked to see my permit, checked the gun, and sent me on my way.
Only time I was ever checked.

I was filling up my 5th card when I left, NYers will know what that means.

I still have a valid NYS carry permit.

Incredible. For as terribly anti-gunowner/anti-2A our moonbat Massachusetts overlords are, New York is even worse.

I'd need a new card made-up as often as once a week (at times) and certainly no less than a dozen or so times per year.

Hell, I'd need a new wallet just to carry all my cards.

Thank the Good Lord that I don't live in New York!!!

Gaston Glock's first pistol was the model 17. Designed for the military and made to be ready to go right out of the box. :You can argue caliber and even brand names but the Glock is accurate dependable, rugged, tolerant of dust, dirt, neglect etc, and easy to field strip and clean. I can have a glock in pieces on a table (Frame barrel slide and recol spring and guide rod) and put back together loaded with a round in the chamber in 20 seconds and no tools needed. And every Glock regardless of caliber or model breaks down exactly the same. If you've ever cleaned one you've cleaned 'em all.

I had 4 of them for 11 years and in those years (I keep shooting logs) I fired nearly 23,000 rnds through them and not one problem of any kind, not one. They go bang every time you pull the trigger.

Zip, Your granddaughter made a very good choice for a first handgun. I know they aren't pretty to look at but they get the job done!

That is not necessarily taking anything away from S&W. Everyone knows that they are top quality fire arms. But they are not the only ones. They both fit a nitch in the need and purpose of guns. There's plenty of room in the gun world for both of them...and some others too.

I was just messing around. I have nothing against Glock, or any other manufacturer, for that matter.

I own three S&Ws (including the lend lease Victory supposedly arriving in the mail tomorow) but my one polymer pistol (first gun) is a Springfield XD9 Mod.2 because I have smaller hands and it had the best ergonomics, for me, of any polymer I tried.

Get outta NY. The feces is spreading to the surrounding counties and is moving upstate!

Besides, having to jump through hoops to buy a piece!

Here in Indiana, you can walk in, buy a gun and be out in 15 minutes, no PD's, Judges or politicians (so far, thank God). Basicly NO WAITING PERIOD!

Wow, NY sounds like a great place to live.

Thought that governor made it safer with his "SAFE ACT"?

Funny how I've never seen nor heard of anyone saying "I'm saving my money so I can retire up North".

Good for your granddaughter....however it sounds like an exercise in futility if she cant use it to defend herself or home.

Finding a CC class here is on the TODO list. Buying a handgun apparently requires a purchase permit but is bypassed if you have a CCL.

My sister in Law ( in Plainfield NJ) found a mdl 36 in a cigar box in a home she inherited from distant family in NJ few years ago...had some cash too. Its rusted on 1 side, I cleaned it up and brought her a box of 38 ammo my last visit to that dump state. Its now a House gun for her as its near impossible to get a firearm in NJ legal. Disobey unlawful laws. If you not a criminal and just want to protect your home no laws should prevent this. Thank God im in NC the past 30 years.

Y'all are making me laugh - - in a good way - - on a been there, done that basis. Thanks for the memories, as Bob Hope used to say.

Non-NYers have to understand the hurdles of gun ownership in that jurisdiction and how do you explain that there is "upstate" with one set of rules, New York City with its own rules, and then Nassau and Suffolk County, which should have the same rules as Upstate but apparently do not.

Don't gag but the good citizens of New York City have to have separate permits to possess long arms, one permit per gun or maybe they list them on one permit until it fills up, etc. A zillion years ago I left NYC with 3 rifles, all on permits. "Long gun permit". I only had one so I guess all three rifles were listed on there. I left NYC with two .25 ACP handguns, too, but nobody in the world knew that I had them except the man who gave them to me. Very long story for another time but suffice it to say I literally kept them in a bank's safety deposit box.

If the Long Island counties have prohibitions like NYC I was unaware of it:

Quote:
I have a card just like it....and yes, it's a sportsman's license, not a carry permit....and if you use it for SD at your home, you'll be arrested, as it is supposed to stay in your safe, unless you're on the way to the range. (though, as some say, better to be judged by twelve, than carried by six.)
Long Island pistoleros (make that Suffolk and Nassau county, as Queens and Brooklyn are part of NYC and a whole different scenario there) know to use a long gun...make that a shotgun, as discharging a rifle on LI is illegal outside of a range, if things go bad.
That's an interesting issue everywhere but it seldom comes up although I can see it coming up in New York. AFAIK there isn't a city, town, or village in the United States that doesn't have an ordinance prohibiting the firing of a weapon inside the city limits. Generally, it's a very local ordinance and not a county-wide ordinance but, again, Nassau and Suffolk counties might be different. In self defense situations it is rarely invoked and, truth be told, I have never heard of that law being invoked in a self defense situation. If anyone has that information I'd like to see it.

There are rules about safe storage, too, but my son-in-law in NYC used to keep his SIG P-226 in his night stand. I think he locks it up now but that was only after he became a daddy.

When my family wants to know why I don't move back to NYC or even NJ where half of them live I just laugh at them.

Relic from NYC:

Office gun and EDC:

Living room:

Bedroom:

and

EDC

Robe gun - ATF approved:

Closet:

Why would I EVER want to give up that level of home and self defense?

While NJ is an unholy pain in the posterior in terms of getting legal, I would advocate that she go through the process and then get rid of that M36. If she ever used it, she would be doing years in prison no matter how good the shooting.

she can legally possess it if she goes about it according to NJ law - she has to turn it into a licensed dealer , apply for + obtain a NJ pistol purchase permit - when she gets permits she can pick it up at dealer after she pays dealer fees + nics check - purchase permits is only $2.00 , but cost would probably over $150.00 for dealer , nics , + finger print fees -

Oh BTW I have been through a Trial in MD 29 years ago for use of a firearm in the home...$30K+ in legal fees in 1989 money. Acquitted. ive made that + a lot more then that over the past 29 years because im alive.Very Poor advice.

No offense, but ... move your loved one out of failed states like NY. Missouri would love to have a hardworking youngster that respects the 2A. Other good states out there too.

If you are stuck because of work in the Northeast at least consider PA and DE. Close to borders and still reasonable on gun laws.

You can get a CCW in PA for $19 and takes less than 30 days. DE has a few more hoops, but they will issue.

I guess my question is, why did her, "LEO Father" wait until she was out of her apartment to get her "set up"??

She didn't want to go through all the official paperwork to get a pistol legally until she moved into the house she bought.
