Dang Richard! That might be the nicest custom case I have EVER seen! If I could have, I would have liked it a million times. What kind of wood is it made from? Also, did you pick the wood and have something to do with it's design or did you tell the maker to do whatever he wanted? Thanks immensely for sharing such a fantastic complete package!

Absolutely outstanding! As if the revolvers are not some of the finest works of engravers art, that burl wood case is just stunning and has elevated this package to world class. You are indeed a lucky man sir with a fantastic collection!

Larry:
The wood is Myrtlewood Burl. Glenn and I talked conceptually about what I wanted in the design of the case (he had done a similar case for a set of 1911s including the prancing pony on the inside of the lid). He then came across this piece of Myrtlewood that would work dimensionally and he and I agreed it would be the perfect piece for this set of Colts. As much as I loved the wood case as is, I asked him to put the oval Colt on the top. Glen was great to work with, offering different schemes and reacting with experience to my requests - what would work and what would not.
Ultimately, I am very pleased with the end product and think the case appropriately displays the beautiful SAAs and is additive to the package as a whole - it was a fun project.

Richard,
I am sure those pictures he sent you made you weak in the knees when you first saw them! I finally remembered what they reminded me of. A few here have gun boxes carved by Kearsarge, I think that is how it is spelled, that are similar. I am guessing yours are carved out like those. That surely takes talent. Did you have to send him your guns or are Colt SAA's close enough in size for that not to be required?

You nailed it - Kearsarge cases were the inspiration for this case. To answer your other questions, I'll walk you through the process:
1. I called Glenn and we discussed a couple of thoughts that I had. When he said that he thought he could do what I wanted, he sent out a box of pressure foam and had me imprint the guns that I potentially wanted cases for. This is what I sent back to him:
Glenn uses the foam imprints to make a plaster replica of the gun. This is how he makes sure the gun fits perfectly in the case.
Note: that there are three guns impressed in the foam and I eventually had him make cases for each...
2. We then talked concepts for the SAA matched set case. Initially we thought we would do a more traditional "dueling" case in a Kearsarge style. This is his initial draft of what we were thinking:
... but it was just too boring for these two guns... Especially after I saw Glenn's photo on his website of a custom case for a set of 1911s:
3. We quickly aligned our interests, and this was the next drawing he sent out...
we refined it a bit more to have the gun outline flow into the case rim...
4. Upon agreement, Glenn set out in search of the right piece of wood. He found this and we both got excited that it would be a great fit.
5. In process (Photos - Glenn Dean - Classic Chests and More)...
6. Lastly the finishing touches - fabric, hardware and the oval Colt on the top as shown in post 24 above.

Double Dang, Richard! That pressure foam idea is really ingenious. You don't have to pay the big bucks to send your guns, don't have to spend big bucks on antacids that you would've had to take the whole time your guns were out of your sight, and still get a perfect fit. I wonder if others are using that idea?
I have never heard of Myrtlewood Burl. It is impeccable! While Kearsarge had a cool idea for a gun case, the gun on bare wood was a problem. Your guy improved on his original idea. I need to drool over his website soon.
Still say finest gun case I have EVER seen!!!

Very kind of you guys. As beautiful as the case turned out, working with Glenn made the "journey" as much fun as the "destination". One of the things that I look for in craftsmen that I commission is someone that lets you be part of the process. That was certainly the case with Glenn - lots of communication, collaboration, and great in-process photos. In addition, he is very prompt in his work - he tells you when he will get to it and then gets it done in a timely manner. Ultimately a delight to work with him and I would highly recommend him to anyone.

I just put the case on the scale and it weighed in at between 10 and 11 lbs with the 12 rounds of .45 Colt ammo.

Just very nice work. Superlatives don't do justice to the revolvers or the case.
I still have the idea rolling around in my feeble brain of a Quigley job on my Triple Lock, #1103, that we talked about. Should have said "Hell with the money, do it." My biggest fear is getting old before ever seeing the project complete.
Perfect canvas for a Quigley job:
Maybe we need to talk again.

You definitely have something special there.
I was going to ask if you could provide further background on the process; then, you did just that. Thank you!
My favorite part is that you had an idea, put it into motion, were engaged in the process and now it's reality.

Although that would undoubtedly make a beautiful engraving project, in my opinion, the patina on that TL makes it beautiful as is. I love it!!! And I would be proud to own and shoot that one. BTW, from the photo's angle it looks like the hammer has a modified flair to it, rather than the standard TL hammer??? I'd love to see a few more photos of that hammer, please.
