Default What was your Best Called Shot?

In case yer wondering what I mean by "Called Shot", it's the shooter describing a way to shoot, being called out on it, and then hitting the target in the manner that was described!

Case in Point:

A few years back I was at a friends house and he was going to go get a .22Mag bolt action rifle that he had just bought for his son for hog hunting. During the ride over and back we talked about the rifle and on the way back his son, DJ, started talking about what scope he was gonna put on the rifle. I told him in the woods around here most shots would be 50 yards or less and most of the time he wouldn't have time to align the scope for the shot as the decision to shoot might have to be made in less than 3 seconds or so and he would need iron sights for that or just learn to "Snap Shoot"..

He asked "What's Snap Shooting?" I replied that it was basically throwing the rifle up level with the target and firing without really even using the iron sight's!

He immediately called BS and for me to prove it!!

Heh!! Kid's!!

When we got back he set some plywood up as a target and then taped 5 pennies on a sheet of paper.. Pennies... I hate Kid's...

He set the range at about 20 feet or so and handed me the rifle. I tossed the rifle to my shoulder a few times to check how she lined up for me, called the bottom left penny, then jacked a round, kicked the safety off, lined up, fired, and safed the rifle in less than a half second...

I walked over to him, hand the rifle over and said: "Nice shooting rifle!"

His response was: "WHERE THE HECK IS THE PENNY!!!!!"

I just smiled and said: "Don't mess around with yer Elders, Son..." I then Strutted away like a REAL Man should!!!

And an FYI to the story is while I have made similar shots like that, That was my first time with a Pennie!! Which he never found!!!

Does archery count? Never had that experience with firearms, but I've got a couple of stories with a bow and arrow.

I was hunting pronghorns in Wyoming with my two brothers and a close friend. At lunch a prairie dog raised his head quite a ways out. The landowner wanted those dead. OK, I’ll help out. Everyone said “no way.” I rested my Remington 700 Custom Mountain Rifle (.280 Rem) on a nearby wooden fence. Every time I put my eye to the scope, the dog would go in his hole. Finally my younger brother said he would get him up long enough for a shot. He let out a sharp whistle and that dog stood on his hind legs. Two seconds later I squeezed the trigger. They all said I missed. Really? 258 long strides later I held up a prairie dog missing its head.

Default M1 Garand

My best called shot.

16 years ago I picked up an M1 Garand. Was new to rifles as I had grown up hunting waterfowl only. Only centerfire rifles I had ever shot were scoped at a rifle range or at a deer hunt at 100 yds. Took it to range and was very impressed with accuracy from iron sites. May have bragged some to my brothers!

Couple of weeks later took it on a turkey hunt to South Texas to hopefully shoot a hog. Morning turkey hunt was a dry hole, so grabbed the Garand and went on a walking safari for pigs. No joy on those either. My brother pulls up in his Chevy Avalanche and says lets go to town (10 miles away, we are in the middle of nowhere) and get lunch.

Get in leaving my shotgun and turkey decoys back where I was hunting (another story happened there later). We are driving off property and on a telephone pole, estimated to be 200 yds. away is sitting a big Grackle. Brother driving said "gun's so accurate, lets see you hit the bird". I'm IN! Got out, laid Garand on top of truck with front door open. Lining up the shot and something is moving under my leg-hitting power seat lever, and seat is moving up. Readjusted, had him turn truck off to stop vibration, and fired.

Did not see any evidence of a hit-no feathers flew, but bird toppled off of pole down to ground. Got back in and told him, I guess its shooting a little high, I was aiming for the body and must have put one through its eye!

Mine was at the Whittington Center outside of Raton, New Mexico.

At one of the rifle range, there was one steel silhouette set at 300 yards. I was shooting at the adjacent range with a Smith Performance Center .44 mag at probably 50 yards. The revolver had a Leopold pistol scope.

There were a couple of rifle shooters next to me trying to clang the steel with what appeared to be military surplus bolt guns.

I asked them if I could try and they smirked but said ok.

My first shot was short but the next five found the target. I think it was a steel Buffalo maybe??

The rifle guys were amazed and no longer smirked.

Little did they know that I had been there the before and had worked out how many clicks of the elevation turret I needed to make that shot.

I'd never try that on live game but it was fun lobbing in those big .44mag pills.

I practiced a lot in those days with my .44s but there was still an element of luck to it.

Me and a buddy use to hustle a few bucks shooting quarters out of the air with a 22rifle. We went through basic together and received Quick Kill training We could do pretty good on dimes but Quarters were dead meat. The trick was you had to have a partner that threw consistently. Anyway we were in local beer joint parking lot and had just relieved some construction workers of $60. Before we started shooting I had sold a guy a HI STD Duramatic 22 pistol. He had a few and was feeling froggy. He had told me he never owned a pistol and wanted to try a 22. Anyway he wanted to shoot for $60. Construction workers are just like Squids on payday. So I took his bet, buddy flipped the quarter and last we saw of it was headed at high speed towards Kentucky. Now I gave the guy the money, no big deal easy come easy go.

Ok...

Story #1

I started shooting archery when I was 11, I think. Compound bow. Got pretty good. In junior high, we did archery one day during PE. Of course, no one knew I was an archer. We used those cheap, red plastic bows you could get in the sporting goods section of Sears. After letting us shoot a bit (which I used to work out how to aim my bow), the teacher gave us a challenge. He put a small, wallet-size photo of himself on the bullseye of each target, and said anyone who hits the photo gets 50 cents. I made $2 by the end of class.

Story #2

Similar to Story #1, but in high school. Also, we had slightly better bows. In fact, I always made sure to get the same one each time because it had a little grain pattern in the riser I used as a make-shift sight. So, this time, I did own up to being an archer, but one of my classmates wouldn't believe I was as good as I said I was. He went and stuck a $5 bill on the bullseye and challenged me to hit it, saying if I could it was mine. I don't think we were shooting that far, maybe 10yds? I routinely shot at 20yds with my own bow, often using the end of a pencil stuck in the backstop as my target for a challenge. I hit the $5 bill on the first try. He never challenged me again after that.

I hope those were in line with the spirit of this thread.

My buddy andI are at our local gun club. He had his new nickel Mod 58 I had my new .45 Blackhawk. After a while we tried each others guns. We had some orange 2” stickers on our targets. I shot 4 into a tight little 4 leaf clover dead center of the sticker. My buddy took the gun mumbling how it was just plain wrong to out shoot somebody with their own gun. Later he decared it was luck and there was no way I could do it again. He handed me the gun and 4 rounds and I shot another clover!

Not exactly called out, but teaching little brother how to shoot, ran target down to 25 yards, had explained sight alignment, trigger control, how to focus on the front sight and presssss... and as I demo'd one shot, I center punched the X in the 10 ring and proceeded to say - your turn :^)

Years ago I called that I would put a bullet through the spindle hole in an old 78 RPM record at 50 yards.

I took the shot and the record didn't shatter, so it must have gone through the center......

(That's my story and I'm sticking to it! Prove me wrong....)

My best shot was my very first time to shoot a center fire rifle. I was maybe 13 and had a school buddy whose dad had brought back a K98k from WWII, but no ammo for it. Somewhere I found exactly one 8x57 round, so he and I went down to the river bottoms to shoot it. We flipped to see who got the honor, and I won. The only thing we had to shoot at was a small glass mustard jar we found on the ground there. I put it out about 50 yards, and whipped up the rifle and fired it - hitting that mustard jar. Was I ever proud, even though it was about 99% luck. Seems like it happened only yesterday, as I remember every detail.

A herd of wild hogs in Germany. 18 miles away with an M110A2 Self Propelled Howitzer. The funny thing is we never knew what we were shooting at. The FO is the one who called the shot. Apparently he got in trouble for it too.

A couple buddies and I decided to go squirrel hunting one morning. All around 16 yrs old. I had done the BB gun in the back yard thing with thrown cans and worked my way down to quarters, nickels then dimes. Never tried it with a 22 rifle. We got out of the car and one guy had a 22 rifle, the rest of us had shotguns. I asked to see his rifle, flipped up a quarter and it zinged away sounding like a bell had been struck. I would like to say I was smart enough to quit at that point, but no ....

I remember when I was 'bout 10 years old. We visited my Uncle Roy's farm.
He pulled out an old .32 rim fire rolling block rife and said, "you see that building over yonder?" And called and shot a knot in one of the boards.
Then he handed the gun to me.
I aimed and fired it and my Uncle Roy started laughing, "boy you can't hit the broadside of a barn."
Then my Dad brought the fact that the hole was now an oval to my Uncle Roy's attention. "Good shooting boy."

Mine was a shotgun? That OK?

Opening day of dove season. Hunting didn't start until noon, but a bunch of us were at the club early. Someone set up a trap and started charging to raise money for the club. Five bucks or something like that for 15 targets. I put my money down and stepped up to the line with my Remington 1100 and proceeded to run the table. Heck, they weren't hard shots at all, even when they tried to throw me off and slipped a double in on me. After my 15, my buddy stepped up with his new 870. After 14 he handed the pump to me and said "try this one." So I broke his last bird too. There was a lot of "Watch him today...he on."

Then I went out in the dove field and couldn't hit the ground with my hat.

1959 , sitting on the back porch of my aunts house with my three cousins, all of us had our Daisy lever action BB guns , they lived "in the country" so we had woods , pastures , ponds to fish in ...you know...boys can be free in the country .
Along the road ran the electrical power poles and from the poles to the house a power line and crawling on the power line was a small green lizard, 50 feet away and twenty feet in the air ....
I say " see that lizard on the power line ?... I'm going to shoot it off " ( now the green lizard's body was only 1/4 inch thick at most. the power line was larger) I threw up the bb gun fired and to my cousin's astonishment ....the green lizard rolled off the wire with a perfectly centered heart/lung shot !
My cousins still think I'm the best shot in Louisiana and at this date I'm not going to tell them any different !
That shot surprised me more than anyone but I didn't let on and took full credit for being a master shot for decades .

That reminded me of a time when I was a kid at my cousin's house. We were in the backyard, and he had a BB rifle. A few houses down we saw a bird sitting on a TV antenna. He said he could hit the bird. He fired, and the bird flew off, but then the antenna bent over. Oops.

1. Several years ago at a church campout, I was asked to bring several of my guns and let the kids shoot them along with .22's that we allowed them to bring. I ran the range for the shoot. I had a 7.5" Ruger Super Blackhawk along. I shot at a reed that was about 100 yds out and after a couple of shots I cut it in half.
2. I recently worked full time security at a high end resort in CO. and ran shotgun, rifle and pistol shoots for the guests. We had steel out to 800 yds on the rifle range and a life size Elk at the 400 yd mark. One day while out there shooting, I said to one of the other security officers that I worked with that I was going to shoot the Elk with my Glock 19.You can guess what he said in response! We painted the steel Elk and he set up a spotting scope. I hit it on my second shot! I hit it a few times after that but certainly couldn't do it all the time although I am sure I was close.

A couple of friends and I were out on the desert plinking with .22 pistols many years ago. I was carrying my very first handgun, a 6" Ruger first generation Standard semiauto.

One of them remarked that shooting inanimate objects like cans and bottles was too easy, and that not many could shoot objects thrown in the air well at all.

I had never tried that feat, but braggingly said that was a piece of cake - I could do it.

My challenge was accepted. In the back of my mind I realized that when an object is thrown in the air. the instant to shoot is at its apex - when it's at its highest and starts to come down. Simply aim directly under it.

So a beer bottle was thrown in the air, and I did exactly what I had figured out. One shot, and the bottle was busted in the air.

I put the safety on, re-holstered the gun after "blowing smoke" and continued to walk on. Got a lot of respect that day!

A friend was at my house and noticed a Coyote about 425 yds moving into the field on the edge of a tree line. I went into the house grabbed my Savage 308. Came back went prone, he kept calling position to me since he is tall and it is hilly by that end of the field. He told me it picked up a little speed, but not running full out, I waited at the one spot that I could see the tree line, which was just short of 300 yards, which I had ranged many times. He said it was coming out, it got about 4 steps, I fired. He said I missed, my wife said she did not know, but thought that it was unlikely. We jumped on the quads, about 3 feet into the grass lay the male coyote. He has since seen me shoot quarter size objects at 250 yds, 1 shot one quarter X 3, he also has watched me take deer at 275+ when he thought he could not make the shot. The thing that got him was we were both on mats and bipods, prone, and I slipped the rifle from right side to left side, took the shot and she dropped, all with the Savage 110 308. Be Safe,

Instructor: "Sure you can hit the paper at 5 yards?"
Me: "I'm sure I can hit the paper at 5 yards."
Not only did I hit the paper at 5 yards, I actually hit the target printed on the paper. Yeah.

Default I got slapped for "calling" my shot

Age 16, first time out with the old guys white tail hunting. Had been told about "buck fever" and since we were shotgun only state, I had my brand new Ithaca Model 37. We got out there very early morning (oh dark thirty) and I don't think it was 10 minutes into legal time and I got a beautiful broadside shot on a nice buck. Took the shot, the deer dropped on the spot.... my elders came over and I called out "Holy $&*! - did you see that?".

Pop's right up side my face immediately (no cussin around our place in those days) so I learned that day to not ever "call" my shots again.

I know....not in line with this thread....but etched in my memory.

I had a BIL that was a functional alcoholic. He had built a nice house on a knoll overlooking the farm. The barn and original house and outbuildings were 150yds down the hill. We went over 2 or 3 times a week because my MIL lived over there too. I would take a rifle according to what time of year it was. One evening 3 deer walked out in hayfield about 100yds. BIL wanted me to shoot them because they were hitting his garden. I didn’t want to shoot them so to shut him up I shot near them running them off.
A little while later a groundhog came out under apple trees down by old house. It was eating filled apples. My BIL who was disgusted with me for “ missing “ the deer ask me if I though I could manage to shoot the GHog.
The GHog was standing chewing on apple held in paws. I told BIL I will not only take the GHog I will shot the apple it’s holding too.I had heavy 243 with 10x scope, rested on his porch. I shot, spattered apple and GHog. My BIL couldn’t get over it. Everyone in the area herd I couldn’t hit a deer but lucked out and shot an apple out of GHog’s paws.

In S Dakota, and we had just arrived at a new field for Prairie Dogs. There were pretty gun shy, and the closest ones were well out there. I spotted one that seemed to be ignoring everything and took a rangefinder reading of 507 yards. The wind was a quartering at about 7 mph. I told my shooting buddy to scope this I'm going to get him. Dialed in my scope and allowed for the wind drift and pressed the trigger. I was rewarded by an Arial flip as he went head over heels.

I was shooting at an old gravel pit in East King County some years back, and there were a couple guys there with a surplus .303 Enfield set up about 20 yards to our left, making shots at clay targets set up around 75 yards out. They were churning up a lot of dirt with the occasional hit on target. I walked over to see what they were shooting and the rifle owner offered me a shot. As I was drawing down on the target, for some reason I had the feeling the sights were off so I aimed about three inches left and an inch or so low. The owner said "It shoots a little left"...I said Yup as I squeezed the trigger, obliterating the clay. I opened the action, said "Nice rifle", and walked off not believing I had actually hit the thing! Both the shooters just stood there with their mouths actually hanging open....

Some years ago while prairie dog shooting with old buddies, the bet was on for the longest ( stepped off) kill shot of the day, sitting on the ground using a tripod only. My trusty old "triple deuce" Remington was up against some stiff competition ( .220 Swift, .204 Ruger, and a 22-250 ). I had a great time razing the big shots when I won with a shot of 382 paces. I have never even tried a shot like that since.

I made a really fantastic shot at a critical time. It’s difficult to compact the details in a short story but it’s too long for all of them. Basically, my first ever trip to a range that I had never been before and we ran in to a guy nearly twice my age who only knew me through posts on our local forum.

I had my 14-inch Contender .223 and a 6x scope and he challenged me to use his sandbag rests and hit his 300-yard 12-inch steel plate. I told him that I had no clue about drops and such, that I thought I was pretty much on target at 100 yards with my handloads, 55gr SP.

He told me that he could dial me in at 300 if I would make the hits he asked me to make. He had me shoot a plate at 50 yards, he made an adjustment and then shoot a plate at 200. He looked at the spotting scope and told me to send another at 200 and I did, and then he adjusted my scope and said I should be able to ding it at 300.

And then he said if I missed it, I was buying his lunch at Olive Garden.

I put that round in the dead center of a plate he had painted and hadn’t yet shot at that day. I didn’t stop grinning until after I went to bed. He was a fantastic coach and knew his distance shooting with rifles, which translated well to a T/C Contender.

Here’s the picture. This happened back in 2011.

My youngest is a real "sharp shooter" I started him at 5 with a cut down 22 scoped and never let him shot anything that wasn't scoped, we lived in Loooong range country. We shot prairie dogs by the hundreds and running jack rabbits a lot.
I have several stories of his feats out shooting all my hunting and range Buddys till they knew better than to challenge him.
The best was we were visiting my cousin and I was dealing with him for a Lazzaroni Warbird (a monster 30 cal. with incredible range) he wanted to sell it cause it has a equally stout recoil and he didn't like it.
My boy had worked his way up to my 30-06 by then and was about a 110 lb 13 yr old.
We wanted to shoot it before we bought it so....... out on a country road we set up gallon milk jugs filled with water at 100, 200, 300 and 400 yds.
The boy wants to shoot it and my coz tells him he better just watch as it will make him recoil shy.
I said let him shoot.
The boy took a knee and knocked the 100. I was watching the impact with binocs , called for a dead on shot at 200 no problem, called shoot 2" higher on the 300 he splashed it. Told him to hold on the lid at the 400...... my coz said bull ****, boy if you can hit that I'll give you the gun.
he was stunned but a man of his word
I paid him for it anyway but to this day he thinks my kid is a lights out shooter.

I have always been a really good shooter, though usually more modest than the beginning of this. So in the spirit of "Called Shot", I share these two that are more unusual and fall more in the area of the called shot you never expected to be successful.

1. We were training with Simmunitions 1994 or 5 when they were first adopted by our agency. As one of the safety officers running a scenario, I was waiting through a 20 minute break between groups when my co-RSO out of the blue says, "Hit That!"
as threw his styrofoam cup out in the target area...
In the position I was standing all I could do was draw one-handed and I got a flash of white in the sight and shot.
Hit it dead center. He said, "Whoa!, do that again."
I declined as if it was not worth the bother.

2. We had breeching guns that were short barrel 870's with pistol grips. When our agency changed from a blue clay breeching round to Copper powder, they basically told us to go to the range and "shoot them up", get rid of them.
It didn't take long for someone to suggest some targets instead of pointlessly shooting them down an empty range. So we posted some standard targets at 25 and stood ten yds from them and shot. That was easy to "Kentucky" in so we moved to the main line and shot 25 yds. I was doing pretty good along with most of the team of 12, when the same guy says,
"100 yards!".
So, most of us being skeptical about it, we posted a single silhouette at the 100 line.
Somehow by near unanimous vote, I was pushed to shoot first.
I kinda believe they were hoping to bring me down a peg.
So I shrugged and lined up the little 12ga doing my best guess for alignment and muzzle up like an artillery piece.
Well. I hit it just about center mid sternum.
Which caused noises from "Yeah!" to "Oh Man".
Then the scoffing and puffing commenced. "I can do that"
Half the team went back to the 25yd targets after a few tries.
The rest plugged away with some hits on the silhouette after multiple shots. But only two others were within the center zone and neither as close to center.
Despite the numerous requests and demands, I chose not to repeat my achievement.

The moral of the stories is: You will never do better than 100% on a 1 for 1. You can only match it or fail, and then you're 50%.

Back in the late 1960’s when it was legal in Vermont to shoot woodchucks
from the road, my friend and I had spent the day shooting those pesky
varmints in the plentiful cow pastures outside Burlington.
The average range was 75 to 125 yards.
It was late afternoon and we were headed home when I saw one out in
a pasture and asked my friend to pull over so I could bag one more for the
day. He asked where it was (he couldn’t see it) and I pointed to a giant oak
tree and told him it was to the right of it.
He said it was to far away (approx 300-350 yards) and with a light breeze
blowing, said I could never hit it. I asked him if he would like to make a bet
and he said a steak dinner (I was shooting a Sako 300win mag with a 4 power scope).
He was looking through his binoculars at the woodchuck as I took the shot and commented that I had missed and it went back into his hole. I told him I didn’t miss and walked to the tree (as a point of reference ) to look for the body. The woodchuck had fallen halfway back into its hole. I lifted
it up to show my friend that I had indeed killed it (bullet went through it’s neck).
That was the best steak I have ever eaten!

Be SAFE and Shoot Often!

Many years ago my dad requested one of my older brothers and I take him on his last rock chuck shoot.
We readily agreed. The old man wanted to go to a friend’s ranch and hunt his hay fields.
On the chosen day we picked up dad and headed out into a blustery morning. Intermittent rain, breezy and cooler than normal temps. Not good conditions for shooting chucks.
We arrived and the chucks were out in small numbers. Dad was not interested in shooting. He was just happy to be there.
My brother and I are both very competitive and we were soon picking targetS for each other and the distances kept getting longer.
My brother had chosen to shoot his .223 while Dad had requested that I shoot his favorite chuck rifle, a Ruger M77V in 220 Swift. Once the yardage got past 300 yards i started getting the better of my dear brother.
In frustration he picked a chuck out for me that was across a draw from us on a large rock. The challenge had been put up and I could not back down, just a brother thing. Have no idea how far it was. We never used range finders.
Using dad’s system of holdover, so many chucks high and so many into the wind I lined up the crosshairs 6 standing chucks high and 8 into the wind. At the shot the old man yelled from the cab of the truck “by God you hit it!! Longest shot I have ever seen on a chuck.”
It was horse pucky luck that I connected the shot. Never admit that to my brother, but it was just that.
When dad doled out his guns before passing he made sure I got that old Swift. He said that I deserved it after that shot. I was happy to see he remembered it after all the time that passed between the shot and the gift.

1. This one is about my mom. My parents met when my mom was living in Rhode Island. So, when my dad brought her home to the West Texas ranch he grew up on to meet his parents, she looked a little out of place in her white, mini-skirt suit. They drove out to my cousins ranch where my grandfather was working cows. When it was time for lunch, the three of them got into the cab of my grandfathers truck to go to the house. On the way my mom pointed out a rattlesnake on the side of the road. Not believing her, my grandfather backed the truck up to prove her wrong. Sure enough, there was a rattlesnake there. My grandfather pulled a gun out from under the seat (knowing my grandfather I'm sure it was a Smith and Wesson ) and asked her if she wanted to shoot it. She took the gun from him, leaned over him and shot the snake in the head. She had no problems being accepted into the family after that. My grandfather had no idea that she had won many medals from the NRA mail in target shoots. She had grown up an Army brat. When her dad would take her skeet shooting, there were usually guys there betting on her shooting.

2. When I was in college, my history professor would take his class to the shooting range and let them shoot muzzle loaders he had. He asked me to go with him one time so I could help out with safety, loading, etc. So, I got to do some shooting too. I wasn't exactly called out, but everyone was very impressed when I shot, several times, a pan at a 100yds with the smooth bore muzzleloader.

Default When I was young...

I shot small guns so much I could shoot from hip, snap shoot and often pull it off, sometimes surprising myself. That was a LONG, LONG time ago. Amazing how your strength, reflexes, coordination and eyesight just don't hold up. Now I can tighten up on my training and don't see any real improvement.

I had a little money and ammo was cheap and I could stomp off into the woods anytime I wanted. Of course Paradise can't last forever and I shot less and less over the years.
