Default Finally Bought It Spyderco Delica 4 EDC Knife Nice

I've been meaning to buy one of these for about 5 years...just been busy; then, I forget, then busy and on and on.

Well, in another post someone had theirs and I ordered right away while it was in my mind. Pictures attached.

Share any reviews or feedback or thoughts. I don't really have rhyme or reason behind pocket folders; just buy what I like regardless of brand. Try to find the best variants of each.

I didn't really get the hype on those until I found one (a Delica 2) at a garage sale for $3 about a month back. After some work with a stone (the prior owner appears to have been incapable of sharpening it properly), I tossed it in my pocket and found it immensely useful.

I think it's the thinness of it overall, it's light, its thin, but its just a really good steel, with a real nice comfortable design.

I should note that I am quite...bad with a stone, I only got one when I found a pair of Wusthof knives at the thrift shop and decided this was the perfect opportunity to learn. Since then I've been scouring thrift shops and garage sales for Wusthofs, and have become...someone who doesn't actually damage the knife using a stone. Although I am thinking I should pick up a spyderco sharpmaker now that I know a bit about sharpening knives, and know that I may never become good enough at it to hold the proper angle consistently enough.

In any case, this was $3 very well spent:

and I consider this $7.25 very very well spent:

Default Spiderco

I've had my first gen daily carry Delica since 1991.
Best knife ever!
I have its twin in a serrated edge for camping, etc. plus a couple more as spares.

I've owned some nice knives from different makers. Emerson. Benchmade. Kershaw. But quite a few years ago I switched over to the Delica. Blades are long enough for most things, without being too long. Thin. Light. Versatile clip placement, left or right, tip-up or tip-down. Easy to open and close with one hand. And not too expensive.

I have these two:

And I have this one, which I had reprofiled to more of a Wharncliffe shape and shortened to just under 2.5":

[Apologies for the differently scaled images. I'm too lazy to edit it. ]

I like the Wharncliffe shape so much I'm considering having my other Delicas reprofiled.

My goal is to get at least one in each handle color, including the rare pink handle if I can find one (and have the money for them).

The Delica is a great pocket knife, IMO.

Looks more like the original blade shape then a wharncliffe. A true wharncliff has a completely straight edge.

Spyderco does make a wharncliffe folder though. They even put it on the delica 4. It may be more economic to just buy the exact thing you want. Check it out.

Great everyday knives. I've carried a Delica or Endura for over 20 years.

True, the edge is not straight like a true Wharncliffe, but the shape has been reprofiled so the spine of the blade angles down to the tip instead of just being a straight line, similar to a Wharncliffe.

I have seriously considered getting one of the factory Wharncliffe Delicas, and I probably will at some point, but as I said, I really like the shape of my reprofiled Delica, better than the factory Wharncliffes I've seen. And I wanted the blade shortened to just under 2.5" to comply with blade length restrictions in some places, like the Post Office. But the factory Wharncliffe Delicas are nice, too.

So many knives, so little money!

I carry one around the house and when I go out. Don't want to lose my old Cases and Buck, or the Spyderco for that matter.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

I carry my Gen 1 Delica on occasion. It's a full serrated blade. It's nice, but I always found it a bit small. I always preferred the Gen 1 Endura I used to have until I had to give it up in the Paris airport (long story).

Congratulations. Spydercos are very well regarded, along with Buck probably the most popular US knife makers. I have never really bonded with them, in part because I don’t carry modern one handed openers very often, and in part because they use so many liner locks and back locks. Now that The patents on Benchmade’s Axis lock have expired, maybe Spyderco will use it on a knife or two. If they do, I might buy one.

Love Spyderco, started carrying an Endura in high school and never looked back. I have a number of them but usually carry a serrated Police or a Native. After loosing an Endura many years ago I take the pocket clips off mine now and just carry them in my back pocket though.

I bought me a tenacious a few months back. It's okay but a little big and obtrusive when in the pocket. I'll give these a look.

I've had an Endura for about 12 years and bought a Delica earlier this year because it was a little bigger than I needed. Love the size of the Delica and it works great and is now my EDC along with a small 3 blade CaseXX pocket knife.

I carried a Delica on duty for 10yrs then decided I wanted something bigger. I tried different CRKT & Benchmades & none of them worked. I finally bought a Paramilitary 2 & I’m happy again. Great choice!

I like Case knives a lot. But when you want something that works and keeps working, Spyderco is hard to beat. I alternate between a Tasman Salt, Delica or Chinook depending on mood and season. The Tasman Salt is my summertime knife. That hawkbill is very useful in the garden or farm and it is the most corrosion resistant high quality knife I have ever used. This corrosion resistance is valuable when boating in salt water.

I have no idea why the Delica was named Delica. Those knives are anything but delicate.

Sixgun,

That’s actually a Delica 3 you’ve got there, and still a bargain at $3! I’ve got an “accumulation” of all four generations of the Delicas. My Delica 3 has the Combination Edge in the middle of the stack below. I carried mine for years.

I’ve got one of each, too. Mine are from ‘93 or ‘94 though. The clip on the Plain Edge got snagged one to many times and finally snapped off. I kept the knife and took it to the Spyderco factory in Golden where they ground the stub flush, drilled and tapped three holes, and put a metal clip on it.

Default OK - I give up

I've got 2 or 3 Buck brand knives that I bought 30 years ago but a couple of months ago, my BIL gave me this Helle knife.

I'm not a blade guy but you guys are.

Is this real brand and what the heck do you do with it? Whittle fire wood??

Default Helle Kinves.

That’s an excellent, hand-made, expensive, general purpose knife. That is a Helle ARV.

When you think of Swedish knives, Mora is the name you think of first. With Norway, it’s Helle. Another way of putting it would be, it’s the only Norwegian knife anybody ever heard of.
In Scandanavia, people use Scandi-ground knives for all sorts of tasks, not just woodworking. I have never had a Helle, but I use mu Moras and Marttiinis for all sorts of things, including food prep.

Shows what I know!

In any case, it's a great knife and I get the hype, which isn't hype.

I'm really curious though to find out how my stepfather likes it, I sent it to him, and he's carried old carbon steel pocket knives all his life because he can put an edge on them. I made him promise to carry this one for a while, still waiting to hear the report.

I expect he's going to really like the thing.
