Looks real nice condition wise and ya got the right caliber for shell availability to boot. Saw one a while back in 25 Remington. Rugged built guns.

That’s a nice looking #8. I remember that scope from 50s. Is D&T holes necessary or does scope use factory screw holes. I’ve never shot a 8 or 81 that was scoped. My first deer rifle when I was a kid was #8 in 35Rem. The 35 is like a jackhammer on deer with 200gr RN bullets. My favorite woods deer gun.

There is an enigma about Frank Hamer's Model 8. He had one but it seems to have been chambered for the .25 Remington. No one knows for sure. Almost certainly, he used a Remington Model 11 shotgun during the B&C ambush, not a Model 8. The rifle most commonly associated with him is a Model 81 in .35 Remington, which he owned, but the Model 81 did not yet exist at the time of the ambush.

There is very little difference between the Model 8 and the Model 81, aside from the stock and fore end design. Probably the most common chambering for the Model 81 was the .300 Savage (for which the Model 8 was never chambered).

There is a picture of FH Jr. holding that Model 81 during an interview in which he claims that it is the gun used by his daddy on B&C. Which is clearly impossible.

There is a reenactment group in Northern LA that puts on an annual show at the ambush site near Gibsland, and they have thoroughly researched which members of the posse used what gun. 100% accuracy is not guaranteed, but about as close as anyone can get at this late date. They say FH used a Remington Model 11. There were two Model 8s known to have been there, neither was used by FH - but one of them may have belonged to FH. The other is reputed have been on loan from some local doctor (I think a doctor, not sure). I have all that information somewhere, but I don't know where. See: Bonnie & Clyde Festival

Another myth is that FH was a Texas Ranger. Of course he had been a Ranger, but at that time he was not. The Texas Rangers were disbanded during the 1933-35 period. He was a special agent for the director of the Texas Prison System (or whatever it was called at that time), hired specifically to hunt down B&C.
