Default Firearms Finishes and Gun Care Oils Greases and Waxes

Ive been trying out different gun care products and did a corrosion test on some of the gun care products on a previous post years back. I would like to go over some of the gun care products that have worked and also go over some that have been miserable failures. For the purposes of not making this information to long Ill go over just a few products and the PISTOLS I use the stuff on. I live in a hot humid swamp donkey so the struggle is real here folks.

I like two primary finishes for my pistols. Stainless steel and parkerized. Polished stainless steel is one of the best. Any corrosion or problems can be buffed out since essentially there is no outer finish or coating and the gun material itself is the finish. If any finish problems are experienced its usually due to plane laziness and neglect. It scratches easy however its easy to buff out. Any chrome cleaner from the auto parts store will work. I like to use Ren Wax or Flitx for stubborn areas. Parkerized is great also not going into detail on what that is most know already. Its what they used on all the old GI guns from back in grandpappy's days. You can still get it on some new guns but its not as popular as it used to be and I wish it still was. Biggest problem is people remove all the oils when cleaning and leave it dry. Big mistake! Keep it oiled keep it greased! I just use petroleum jelly and it works great and cheap as water. Also the finish can be redone cheap and easy by anyone. I also like chrome which is very resilient however if it gets damaged its ruined and would need a very expensive refinish process. Cerakote and all the horde of other painted on like finishes is okay however once again it gets damaged it would need to be completely redone. Bluing is one of the best looking however one of the worst! Probably the worst corrosion resistant properties however you can touch it up easy which is nice.

Im going to go over some of the oils greases and waxes I like and dont like. Im going to start with ones I like in two categories. One for carry everyday guns and one for storage of guns. I like to use a non toxic product on carry guns. For that list I like the following:
1. Ren Wax: its just wax nothing more nothing less. Works good on a painted gun finish like cerakote or similar stuff and works decent on as a corrosion inhibitor on metal.
2. Ny Oil: You need an oil inside your gun to prevent corrosion and keep things lubed. Ny Oil is basically fish guts oil. Its an ancient substance believe it or not they used to use it in old grandpappys car transmission before they started making synthetic oil. Its good stuff and non toxic its what I use in my carry gun and it washes out of clothes easily non staining.
Ones I dont like and aint worth a darn!
1. Froglube: this is another non toxic one however i tested it and it failed miserably. Biggest problem it seems to not give an corrosion resistance to anything. Also if you like spreading minty coconut oil on your guns this is the one for you!

These other oils and such I have no idea how toxic they are but they work good.
1. Eds Red: Its a home brew of acetone car transmission fluid and other chemicals. Works good on guns however this one is probably very toxic. This would be good choice if you have lots of firearms to clean and need an economical choice of gun care.
2. CLP works okay some better than others. This is a big classification of stuff. Ill go over quickly on which ones I like and which ones I dont like.
-Rem Oil: Eh its okay I would pass it up though however if you dont have anything else probably better than WD-40.
-FP-10: Very good corrosion preventative lube and cleaner probably the best on the list however can be expensive and not sure if its non toxic.
-Ottis: Surprising good and cheap!
-CLP: This stuff I used in the military its okay better than nothin.
-Hordes of others: Better than nothin.
-Car Oil: Eh rather not probably toxic and makes a big mess of everything it gets on.

Heres a list of greases waxes and creams that work good on guns and not so good. Some I mentioned already. Grease is great for long term storage or on stubborn tight gun friction areas.
1. Rig Grease: Works great and probably the closest thing to the old grandpappys cosmoline. Great for storage of firearms also great for upkeep a little on a rag goes a long way. Not sure if its toxic or not but it probably is.
2. Hoppes Grease: This one surprising aint worth a darn! Terrible corrosion protection qualities and cant be used on any friction parts on the gun. Does that make any sense to you? Not me!
3. Frog lube: About as good as frog spit. (Disclaimer: A positive note about FrogLube is it seems to work okay on parkerized finishes as a corrosion resistant grease ONLY) I woulndt use the stuff inside the gun works. Its non toxic which is a huge plus! You could probably spread it on your garlic bread for a minty frog treat... Dont ever do that sir or maam!
4. Johnson Paste Wax: This one is okay but I think Ren Wax is better however you can get a lot of it cheap.
5. TW-25: This grease is probably the best on the list of greases. Works great on friction points and has excellent corrosion resistance however it can be expensive and you get small quantities. Once again a little goes a long way!
6. C5A anti seize: Basically this is the junk that Glock uses on their pistols. You know that weird copper stuff you always wondered about? Works good on slides and like previous a little goes a very long way.
6. P Jelly: Works good on parkerized finish and long term storage. Cheap as grass clippings however not good for moving parts and friction areas. This is also non toxic which is a plus.
Theres others I use however I dont have long term experience with those yet. Ill update this list with other products as I continue through this rainbow of gun care wonder and amazement.

Stumbled onto the TW25B when a guy at my range did some work on my pistol and the slide was noticeably slicker operating when I got it back.
Also learned about the cleaner degreaser from the same manufacturer called MC25. I like to use on polished stainless, and before applying Renwax.

Lots of options out there, and just about any of them will do.

Like OP, I'm not a fan of Frog Lube. It's been a while since I've looked into it, but any lube that requires additional steps to work, like heating your gun in the oven, is a no-go for me. I've seen mixed reviews.

I've used Tetra Gun oil and grease in the past. They worked well for me. However, I've since read reports that they can get moldy if left for a long time.

Break Free CLP is the one I've used the longest, and I think it's a great all-around product. I've had guns, including a blued 1911, that spent over 20 years in a foam-lined case (which everyone says you shouldn't do) with no signs of rust, and all I did was wipe them down with Break Free CLP before storing. [FYI, when I got them out of storage I did flush them with Gun Scrubber because the lube had gotten a little gummy, and re-lubed them, and they were fine after that.]

For several years now I've been using BF CLP for cleaning and preserving, and Gun Butter oil for lube. It's also worked well. No complaints from me.

I've been wanting to move to more non-toxic options, so earlier this year I switched to MPro7 for cleaning and Lubriplate for lube/preservative. My reason for switching to Lubriplate was in large part on the recommendation of Grant Cunningham. He said since it's designed to work on food processing equipment, it's non-toxic and provides a good measure of corrosion protection, as well as being a good quality lube. Obviously, I can't give a long-term use report, but so far they've been working quite well for me.

Which brings me back to my original statement. Just about any of the good products out there will work. Some may be better than others for some people, in different environments, purposes, etc. But for the most part they'll get the job done.

Ive heard good things about all of those however I havent used any of them besides the Break Free. I used tons of that stuff in the past so much so that I no longer use blood in my veins and now pump the stuff through my body to keep me lubed up and virile!

Mineral oil AKA J&J Baby Oil. It's all I use now. Learned that from GunBlue490.

I've used Break Free CLP so much on my Beretta 92FS over the years, that it actually has a permanent BF smell, no matter what I use to clean/lube it.

I buy Hoppes aerosol solvent cleaner and then use a light coat of Remoil aerosol and wipe the guns off. For grease I have a tube of Bear grease that's probably 30 years old, a tiny bit goes a LONG way.

Have a shelf full of related products. All are/were the latest & greatest. Liked Ballestol, but Mrs complained about the smell. So, when it's all said & done, I always go back to Hoppe's #9, Rem Oil, and Rig grease.

I don't know if the OP is familiar with this one.

It's been out for over thirty years.

It was used in Iraq extensively.

It is rumored that S&W uses it to assemble weapons.

It has had great reviews.

What waxes are good for blued guns? I can't find Johnson's paste wax or Ren wax. Any other commonly available waxes?

Try supermarkets, Wal Mart, the big box hardware stores, smaller stores like Ace Hardware. A can of JPW should last you a lifetime. Could also try neutral shoe polish - it's wax too.

I use watch and clock oil for internal gun parts lubrication as it doesn't gum up. I have some as I work on clocks also. Something you would almost have to buy on the internet. I have a 4 ounce bottle of Windle's, had it forever. It doesn't take much. J.D. Windles Clock Oil 50ML

Many believe synthetic motor oil is about as good a general use gun oil as you can find, but I haven't used it.

Another tip - about any light oil will do an excellent job as a bore cleaner. Try cleaning your dirty bore with Hoppe's, Shooter's Choice, or whatever bore cleaner you usually use. Clean it until your wiping patch is clean. Then run an oil wet patch through the bore and see how black it is. Long ago I used penetrating oil as a bore cleaner. it did a good job.

Have you tried checking online? I just did a quick Google check and Amazon has Renaissance Wax in stock.

Pardon me, but I don't believe NY Oil is derived from "fish guts". My understanding is that it is a very highly refined mineral oil. And was formulated as a replacement for whale oil. It has a very low viscosity hence it penetrates carbon, residue and grime in general. A very nontoxic cleaner and lubricant.

Is EEZOX sold in stores locally or does it have to be ordered. I think I would like to try it, as I have tried all the above mentioned except Frog Lube, but was already told it wasn't worth the money.

The BEST prices that I could find were at EEZOX

There is a map on their website that shows where dealers are but your best off ordering straight from them.

Yes, Amazon has them both. If you don't like dealing with Amazon, there is always Brownell's or MidwayUSA, for Ren Wax at least.

Lowe's has Johnson's Paste Wax if you don't want to wait. I would guess any car wax would be as good or better and available just about anywhere.

My Fav for 40 years has been RIG #2 Oil which is a CLP product. Unfortunately, Birchwood - Casey was just recently sold to GSM and the Rig #2 Oil was discontinued. Thankfully I've got enough to last me many years

I also use RIG Universal Grease for long term storage of rarely used guns - doesn't get nay better than this! Rig +P Grease is also a great product for slides and bolts. basically a little thinner version of the Universal Grease.

I also started using Breakfree CLP a few years ago and it seems to perform very well. Guess I was late to the game on this one - lol.

Still the BEST Solvent ever (IMHO) is good old Hoppes 9. Maybe not for the new fangled plastic, polymer and laminated stuff, but for vintage guns it works the best for cleaning!

As far a Renwax goes, I own a can and do use it occasionally, but rarely on guns - lol. It works well but on firearms that get shot routinely, it's more trouble than its worth to me. If you are talking about a wall hangar or a safe queen that comes out for a viewing once a month - then thats a good place to use Renwax. Renwax should be used on a clean dry gun, not over an oiled gun and regularly shot guns are really never really free of oil.

Hey - to each his own and if guys want to clean their guns and then make sure they are totally dry to apply Renwax - then who am I to stop them. After shooting them, the Renwax finish is compromised and the same routine has to be repeated over and over. Not for me.......

I do use the Renwax on many collectibles that sit on shelves - and for that purpose it works well.

Range Rag:

I always carry a 100% Cotton Flannel Range Rag that has gun oil (in my case Rig #2 Oil) all over it. I keep it in a sealed heavy duty zip lock bag and after shooting and before putting a gun back in its gun case I wipe it down. That gets 90% of the dirt, dust, powder residue etc. off before it gets put away and makes cleaning it at home much easier.

I use a white colored Flannel so I can see just how dirty it is getting. After 4-6 months I toss it and saturate a new piece. If you buy a few yards at a fabric store, these Range Rags are dirt cheap and are great! I find that a 24" x 24" piece is just about right.

Some good suggestions here no doubt, but this is another one of those topics where the obsessive can really get carried away with the many different products that are very similar and produce the same results.

As long-time gunwriter and benchrest shooter Warren Page replied when asked about his favorite cleaners, lubes, etc., his reply was "whatever's free!" That probably remains a good summation.
